Dark Horizon for Peace, Pope Says in World Address

“For when they shall say, peace and security; then shall sudden destruction come upon them, as the pains upon her that is with child, and they shall not escape.”- 1 Thessalonians 5:3

VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul said on Thursday that the horizon for peace in the world was dark and that humanity found itself gripped by fear of an uncertain future.

But, speaking to diplomats in his annual ``state of the world'' address, he said the world needed a process of healing so that violence would not be heaped upon violence.

In his wide-ranging address, he also said fighting terrorism was legitimate and that killing in God's name was blasphemy. He told Israelis and Palestinians that the ``law of retaliation'' would get them nowhere.

``The horizon indeed appears dark,'' the Pope told diplomats from most of the 172 countries that have relations with the Vatican in his address in the frescoed Reggia Hall in the Apostolic Palace.

``Those who have lived through the great movement toward freedom and the changes of the 90s are surprised to find themselves gripped today by fear of a future which has once again become uncertain,'' he said.

``As this year begins, we are tragically aware that humanity finds itself in a situation of violence, suffering and sin.''

The September 11 attacks on the United States and their effect on world peace prospects dominated the Pope's address.

``The legitimate fight against terrorism, of which the abhorrent attacks of last September 11 are the most appalling expression, has once again let the sound of arms be heard,'' he said.

Barbarous aggression and killings, the Pope said, pointed to the need for self-defense and the most effective means of eradicating terrorism.

But the world community had to ``search for the factors underlying such (terrorism) acts.'' He also spoke of the need to ''bring about a process of healing in order to overcome fear and to avoid evil being added to evil, violence to violence.''

AFGHANISTAN NEEDS HELP

He urged nations to help the newly installed government in Afghanistan to achieve a lasting peace.

The Pope again firmly rejected the concept of killing in God's name. Islamic militants such as Osama bin Laden -- who Washington blames for the September 11 attacks -- have used religion to justify terrorism.

``Killing in the name of God is an act of blasphemy and a perversion of religion... Terrorist violence is a contradiction of faith in God,'' he said.

But he said the fight against terrorism should not distract from other pressing problems.

The Pope said he was worried about the growing tensions between Pakistan and India, the financial and political crises in Argentina, and the armed struggles and health emergencies decimating Africa's people.

Turning to the Middle East, the Pope said Israelis and Palestinians must get back on the track to peace or face being mired in hatred forever.

He said man was to blame for making the Holy Land ``a land of fire and blood.''

``No one can remain indifferent to the injustice of which the Palestinian people have been victims for more than 50 years. No one can contest the right of the Israeli people to live in security,'' he said.

``Weapons and bloody attacks will never be the right means for making a political statement to the other side. Nor is the logic of the law of retaliation capable any longer of leading to paths of peace,'' he said.

``One against the other, neither Israelis nor Palestinians can win the war. But together they can win the peace.''
