Priest shot by man who says he was abused...

BALTIMORE, May 14, 02 (CWNews.com) - A Baltimore priest was shot and wounded by a man who had accused him of sexual abuse years ago, local authorities said on Tuesday.

Dontee Stokes, 26, surrendered to police Monday night and said he shot Father Maurice Blackwell after the priest refused to talk with him, a police spokesman said. Stokes, who claims he was abused nine years ago, is charged with attempted murder, weapons violations, and first and second-degree assault. Blackwell is in serious but stable condition at a local hospital.

According to a police report, Stokes drove to Blackwell's home about 6 pm Monday night. Witnesses said Stokes tried to talk to Blackwell, but the priest rebuffed him. Stokes then opened fire, hitting Blackwell three times and then drove away.

A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Ray Kempisty, said Stokes reported allegations of abuse by Blackwell to police in 1993, but he was never charged. The archdiocese conducted its own investigation and found the charges were "not credible," Kempisty said. Blackwell was returned to his parish.

But in October 1998, the archdiocese put Blackwell on an involuntary leave after he admitted he had an inappropriate relationship with another minor, Kempisty said. Blackwell was removed from his post as pastor at a parish where he had been assigned since 1979. Church officials said Blackwell admitted to the relationship and said it ended by 1978. They said the police investigated, but again they did not charge the priest.
