Iraq vows a wave of suicide bombings in US...

Baghdad -- Following the apparent suicide bombing that killed four U.S. soldiers, Iraq's vice president on Saturday called for an Arab "jihad" against American interests and strikes against targets inside the United States, and promised a wave of suicide attacks against U.S. troops inside Iraq. Inviting Arab radicals to come and fight for the Baghdad regime, Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan told a news conference with foreign journalists that suicide missions against U.S. and British forces will become "routine military policy."

Ripping into Iraq's foes with stunning venom, Ramadan effusively praised the Iraqi who killed four U.S. soldiers at Najaf in central Iraq earlier Saturday. "This is only the beginning and you will hear more good news in the coming days," Ramadan said. "If American B-52 bombers can kill 500 people at a time, I am sure the actions of our martyrs can carry out operations that kill 5,000 people," he said, adding that U.S. and British forces should "pack your bags and leave us alone."

Ramadan is the third-highest-ranking official in the government and a noted hard-liner. He first threatened the use of suicide attacks, including outside of Iraq, in February. But some observers suggested that the intensely harsh rhetoric indicated a new sense of desperation by the Iraqi regime as U.S. troops advance toward Baghdad from the south.

WON'T CAPITULATE
"What is Iraq going to do when it doesn't have the plans, bombs and missiles to defend itself?" said Ramadan. "Capitulate? This (suicide missions) is what we are forced to do." He also heaped scorn on U.S. suggestions that the bomber, identified as Ali Jaffar Al Naimi, a noncommissioned army officer, might have been coerced into the mission. "Martyrdom may be something you Westerners do not know about. Muslims here know that it is a state of mind, in the self, in which injustice and aggressions are confronted," said Ramadan. There have been reports that the number of volunteer fighters coming to Iraq from other Arab countries has been growing in recent weeks, a point that Ramadan emphasized, as he also called upon other Arabs to rise up against their own governments.

"We expect arrivals of columns of such people, and we expect the people of Arab countries to rise high in this decisive battle, to turn each temple in the Arab world into a battlefield, to fight not only those who wear American and British uniforms but all those who support them," he said, referring to such countries as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar, which have provided military bases to U.S. and British forces to launch the invasion. When asked whether Iraq would accept support from Osama bin Laden, he refused to answer directly, saying that doing so "would only give help to the aggression against Iraq." However, he added, Iraq "welcomes the support of all Arabs."

But his speech also appeared to reflect a bleak calculation by Iraq's leadership that its only chance of surviving is to mount a fierce, no-holds- barred resistance on the battlefield while fomenting unrest throughout the Arab world. In recent private conversations with Western reporters, Iraqi officials have said they believe the anti-war movements in the United States and Britain will be able to force their governments to withdraw only if large numbers of soldiers come home in body bags, as was the case in the Vietnam War.

REPORT OF ARAB VOLUNTEERS...
Earlier Saturday, Iraqi television showed a 10-minute news segment about the supposed Arab volunteers. About 200 fighters, identified as Syrian, Palestinian and Egyptian, were shown in military uniform in a camp outside Baghdad. In on-camera interviews they pledged "to follow the way of jihad" against the U.S. "aggressors." Government officials said the fighters entered Iraq through Syria, whose government has been accused by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld of channeling military equipment to Saddam Hussein's military. Ramadan did not respond directly to a question on whether the accusation was true.

Damascus and Baghdad, ruled by rival wings of the Baath Party that have long feuded bitterly, have dramatically improved relations in recent years -- to the point that Syria now is perhaps Iraq's closest ally in the Arab world. Seeking to broaden the meaning of the U.S. attack on Iraq, Ramadan emphasized, in unusually emotional terms, that Baghdad views the war as a struggle to prevent a new era of colonial domination in the Middle East.

"Battle is an honor for every single Arab with the least concept of honor and dignity," said Ramadan. "If they do not face up to this battle, there will not be another. It is a battle for the liberty of self, it is a battle for land and dignity." While his words might be interpreted as mere bluster and propaganda, they echo a surge of nationalistic feelings expressed on the streets recently by many ordinary Baghdad residents. In casual meetings, taxi rides and interview after interview, many residents here say that while they would have been glad to see Hussein overthrown, they now feel intense anger against the United States for invading their country, for bombing its cities, and for the hundreds of dead and injured that have resulted.

Crucifix on front and back door... The only real protection against suicide bombers...
