Cardinal Raymond Burke has been very outspoken in recent months about the importance of Catholic education in building a strong family culture, and he’s scheduled to give another address on Catholic education and the family this April at The Newman Guide-recommended Northeast Catholic College in New Hampshire.
From the event description: “Northeast Catholic College is pleased to announce that His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke will visit the college on April 4, 2016. His Eminence currently serves as the Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and previously served as the Cardinal Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.” Following a Mass celebrating the Solemnity of the Annunciation and other events during the day, Cardinal Burke will give an evening address at the College on the theme “Renewing the Family and Catholic Education.”
“The Church makes it clear that the family has the primary responsibility for the education of children. Schools should serve, complement and reinforce the education that Catholic parents are providing but they cannot replace the spiritual and broader human formation that parents are responsible for providing,” Northeast Catholic College President Dr. George Harne told The Cardinal Newman Society. “And yet, given the decline of Catholic culture in America and the parochial school system, it is also often the case that recently established or revived Catholic schools will have to evangelize Catholic families that have been poorly catechized themselves.”
Harne said this is particularly the case today “when several generations of parents have not received a strong understanding of the Deposit of Faith and tend to think with the broader culture rather than with the mind of the Church.” Instead of reinforcing the Catholic values of families, Harne said many faithful Catholic schools are proposing these values to families “for the first time.”
“Either way, the family and the Catholic school should work together for the good of the family, the children and the greater Church,” he added.
“Evangelization and the renewal of Catholic culture must go hand-in-hand. The center for this renewal is the family and its primary support must be Catholic education,” said Harne. “Thus it is fitting that Cardinal Burke will look at the renewal of the family and Catholic education together.”
Cardinal Burke visited the campus of another Newman Guide college last month, Thomas Aquinas College, where he spoke on the subject of “Genuine Catholic Education and its Power to Transform Our Culture.”
During his address Cardinal Burke said, “Christian education, in the family and in the school, introduces children and young people in an ever-more profound way into the tradition, into the great gift of our life in Christ and the Church, handed down to us faithfully in an unbroken line by the Apostles and their successors.
“Education, if it is to be sound — that is for the good of the individual and society — must be especially attentive to arm itself against the errors of secularism and relativism, lest it fail to communicate to the succeeding generations the truth, beauty, and goodness of our life and our world as they are expressed in the unchanging teaching of the Faith in its highest expression by means of prayer, devotion, and divine worship, and in the holiness of life of those who profess the Faith and worship God in spirit and truth,” he continued.
Cardinal Burke further told the crowd, “A truly Christian home is necessarily a sign of contradiction in today’s society. We must, therefore, inspire courage in Christian couples to give the witness to the truth about marriage and family, which our culture so sorely needs.
“We must help Christian homes to be the domestic church according to the ancient description, ‘the first place in which the Catholic faith is taught, celebrated, and lived,’” he stressed.
Last November at a conference on sacred liturgy in London, Cardinal Burke was asked by the Newman Society about the responsibility of Catholic schools and colleges to provide sound catechesis on marriage.
“It’s a primary responsibility” for Catholic schools to conduct age appropriate instruction for younger children, Cardinal Burke replied. “I remember when I was going to elementary school, we had the Baltimore Catechism and we were taught about marriage from the first years of school. Then as we got older, we got the second and third edition and it got more substantial, but it was always the same in building and growing.”
Catholic colleges and universities “most especially should be attentive both in what’s taught in the theology classes, but also in the discipline in the life of the university to reflect the truth about marriage,” he said, adding, “It is a great, great responsibility.”
Cardinal Burke also addressed Catholic education’s connection to the culture in comments delivered last October in Rome.
“Today, parents must be especially vigilant, for sadly, in some places, schools have become the tools of a secular agenda inimical to the Christian life,” he said. These corrupt educational institutions indoctrinate students and cause confusion about the fundamental truths of the Faith, leading children “to their slavery to sin … profound unhappiness, and to the destruction of culture.”
