Mexican state of Guanajuato passes pro-life constitutional amendment: 11th state to do so...

Despite bitter protests from pro-abortion organizations and representatives, the Mexican state of Guanajuato has passed a pro-life amendment, becoming the eleventh state to do so in recent months.

The amendment states that "a person is a complete human being from his conception until his natural death. The State will guarantee to him the full enjoyment and exercise of all of his rights."

The measure was approved overwhelmingly, 26-0. The ten representatives opposed to the legislation abandoned the chamber before the vote was held.

The amendment was supported by the conservative National Action Party, which holds a majority of seats in the state legislature. They were reportedly joined by two members of the liberal Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and one member of the socialist Labor Party (PT).

Similar amendments have been passed in ten other Mexican states in recent months, in response to pressure from the PRD and its allies to legalize abortion throughout the country.

The PRD-controlled government of Mexico City legalized abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy in 2007. The procedure is carried out in government hospitals at taxpayer expense. Over 24,000 unborn children have been killed by the procedure since the law was passed.

However, many members and supporters of the PRD and other socialist parties have a pro-life stance, which has been reflected in their votes in favor of recent pro-life constitutional amendments. Despite a generally pro-abortion attitude in the nation's capital, opposition to the deadly procedure remains high at the state level, even among leftist political parties.

Swine flu announced two years ago to the day that abortion was legalized in Mexico City

As loathe as I am to sully the good name of "swine" by relating them to abortion, there is a story in the Mexican swine flu epidemic that you will not hear broadcast by the major media or lamented in the stories of its victims: it is the connection between the epidemic and the legalization of abortion in Mexico.

I learned of the story this week when I was conducting an HLI pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The swine flu scare was "officially" announced on Friday, the 24th of April, two days before our pilgrimage was set to begin. The outbreak at that time was mostly limited to Mexico City which seemed to be the epicenter of the viral storm and where 20 people had already died (although it appears that the facts are not yet in on the causes of these and other suspected "swine flu" deaths).

Despite the scare, 35 of our pilgrims decided to risk it and bring their intentions to the feet of Our Lady at the place where she chose to manifest her love to the people of that land in 1531. However - and this is the connection - it was also on April 24th, two years ago to the day that abortion was legalized in Mexico City, setting such an evil precedent for the whole nation. The connection just seems too eerie to be coincidental.

On the positive side, the fallout from the flu also affected access to abortion in the city. Since 2007 there have been 14 hospitals, both public and private, that put out a shingle to make a killing off of abortion in the world's second largest city. During the swine flu epidemic only one of them has continued to offer abortions. Our pilgrims went to that killing center this week to pray and counsel the women going in for abortions. The restriction of the killing in the place where abortion is newly practiced cannot but be a clear message from the Lord of life about the evil that has come upon them. When people are more disturbed by a virus than by the wholesale slaughter of babies, they need a wake up call. And it appears that they just got it. "Let him who has ears, hear."

Finally, our HLI affiliate in Mexico told us about another very curious effect of the epidemic: namely, that the pro-abortion governor of Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, who was scheduled to fly to the United States this week to receive an award for his role in getting abortion legalized in Mexico City, had to cancel his trip in order to attend to the disaster before him. It's hard to feel sorry for his tremendous misfortune. He helped bring an unmitigated disaster to his country, and we pray that he will get that particular message before he stands before the judgment seat of God to face his own personal and eternal disaster.

On the home front, the United States Senate has just confirmed President Odama's pick of pro-abortion "Catholic," Kathleen Sebelius, as our own Secretary of Health and Human Services. This expert in dealing with swine came on board just in time to handle the flu epidemic before it kills too many people in the United States. She may not realize that abortion kills more Americans in a day than the swine flu will ever kill in this country. Let us pray that she too will get the message that the true epidemic in this country is not swine flu - it's the killing of children by abortion - and history will remember her role in this modern plague.

Mexico Archdiocese says abortion on demand has transformed capital into a "homicidal city"...

The Archdiocese of Mexico City has issued an editorial addressing Mexico City's second anniversary of abortion on demand, in which it accuses the anti-life legislation of transforming the capital into a "homicidal city," according to the Catholic news agency ACI Prensa.

The editorial, which was published in the Archdiocesan magazine From the Faith (Desde la Fe), compares the number of unborn babies murdered by abortion with those killed by organized crime.

While ten thousand people have been killed by organized crime in the last three years, more than double that number of unborn children have died by abortion, the editorial notes. The figure of the number of children who have died by abortion given by the Mexico City government is approximately 23,000.

The editorial also congratulates the many state governments who have followed the Mexico City law with amendments to their constitutions, protecting the right to life from the moment of conception or fertilization.

The states that have passed such amendments are "demonstrating that they are not going to allow themselves to be blackmailed by intolerant and aggressive factions financed by the darkest international interests who have lost direction regarding life, that do not hide their hatred towards the Church and their evil inspiration, and who want to impose hedonistic, irresponsible, and egotistical models of fulfillment throughout society," the editorial says.

In its own denunciation of the anniversary, Mexico's National Pro-Life Committee observes that "they have converted the 14 maternal-child hospitals of the Federal District into extermination centers for recently-conceived babies up to 12 weeks of gestation."

The Committee claims that, contrary to news reports and officially recognized statistics, "at least 14 women have died" as a result of abortions done under the new law in the past two years. To commemorate the anniversary of the law, the group held a protest outside of government offices with a woman posing as a dead victim of abortion.

The government of Mexico City has thus far only recognized one death, and claims that its policy has been a "success."
