Claim that pro-life activism is a form of "terrorism" and call for Department of Homeland Security to investigate

Abortion Proponents “Exploit” Tiller Killing, Label Pro-Life Advocates “Domestic Terrorists”...

Defenders of legalized abortion in the Odama administration are exploiting the assassination of George Tiller, Kansas' infamous late-term abortionist, to attack the pro-life movement, according to prominent pro-life activist Jill Stanek. 

"Already we've seen the pro-abortion movement try to exploit this, which is not a surprise," Stanek told U.S. News and World Report.

"[President Odama's chief of staff] Rahm Emanuel is famous for saying, 'Never let a crisis go wasted' and already we're seeing talk of the Justice Department and [Attorney General] Eric Holder calling in forces to protect the abortion forces and clinics, and we're going to see moves to attempt to stifle free speech. It now falls to the pro-life movement to protect the First Amendment."

In the hours following the death of Tiller, pro-abortion journalists and organizations have issued statements blaming the pro-life movement on the whole for the actions of a man acquaintances say suffered from mental illness and belonged to fringe organizations rejected by the pro-life movement.

Mike Hendricks, writing for the Kansas City Star asserts that "the motive for the crime we can all surmise, given the vitriolic rhetoric aimed at Tiller these past couple of decades by anti-abortion activists. And if we’re right about that, then we know the identities of his accomplices."

"If anyone is in need of salvation now, it’s the anti-abortion movement in Kansas and across the nation. … the bullet that killed George Tiller also shattered the moral underpinnings of the movement that inspired its firing."

The National Organization for Women (NOW), a pro-abortion feminist organization, blamed the "anti-abortion" movement for the murder and called on the Department of Homeland Security to declare the movement a form of "domestic terrorism."

"Dr. Tiller's slaying is the most recent in a string of murders in the service of the anti-abortion cause, and hundreds of people have been injured or threatened because they provide legal abortion services," said NOW in a public statement on its website.

"Bringing the killers to justice is not enough - the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security must root out and prosecute as domestic terrorists and violent racketeers the criminal enterprise that has organized and funded criminal acts for decades."

Bonnie Erbe of U.S. News and World report announced on the magazine's website that "Tiller Murder Is Terrorism, and All Pro-Life Extremists Are to Blame." 

"Let George Tiller's murder be the last straw. It is time for America's pro-choice majority to stop standing idly by as extreme so-called pro-life advocates murder obstetrician-gynecologists (OB/GYNs) who are providing women with the legal right to terminate pregnancies," opined Erbe adding that, "I am careful to note I am referring here to EXTREMIST pro-life advocates, people who refer to abortion as 'baby-killing' and other inflammatory rhetoric."

The problem is, however, that the whole pro-life movement is based upon the premise that the unborn child is a human being with an inherent right to life. Hence, Erbe's definition of an extremist as being someone who refers to abortion as 'baby-killing'. By that definition this would encompass nearly every mainstream pro-life activist in the country and many very prominent religious, political and other leaders who accept the basic biology of unborn human life and have consequent human rights concerns, as well as a deep concern for the mothers who frequently suffer from having been forced or intimidated into aborting what they knew was their living child.

Jill Stanek notes that, in contrast to the statements by Erbe, Now, and others, "The pro-life movement is the most peaceful social justice movement in American history. There are a thousand abortion clinics and small groups of protesters outside many of them and nothing ever happens, except that some pro-lifers get run over by pro-aborts. So this is so ironic."

"There has never been a social justice movement that has been totally focused on saving human lives, as opposed to expanding voting rights or other rights, like the pro-life movement is."

Pro-life organizations nationwide issued statements today condemning the killing of Tiller, who specialized in late-term abortions in his Wichita, Kansas, clinic.

Tiller was unsuccessfully prosecuted for violating state laws against late-term abortions without the necessary legal justifications, and was under investigation by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts for the same charges at the time of his death.

He was shot and killed on Sunday morning while fulfilling the functions of an usher at a Lutheran church in Wichita.

Witnesses have confirmed that a man that was shot and killed in the lobby at a Wichita church this morning was Kansas late-term abortionist George Tiller.

Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a congregation member. Police have reportedly apprehended a suspect - a white male who was seen fleeing the scene of the shooting in a blue Taurus.

The Kansas abortionist has long been a lightning rod for the abortion debate, partly on account of his emphasis on providing late-term abortions at his Wichita facility – a specialization that recently landed him in court on 19 counts of conducting illegal late-term abortions.

Last month, after a three day trial, a jury acquitted Tiller of all the charges. Immediately following the trial, however, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts stated that it was bringing 11 charges against Tiller’s license. The Board accused Tiller of “performing an abortion on a fetus that was viable without having a documented referral from another physician not legally or financially affiliated with him; unprofessional or dishonorable conduct or professional incompetency; and commitment of acts likely to deceive, defraud or harm the public."

Pro-life organizations immediately denounced this morning’s killing. Operation Rescue, which has helped spearheaded the effort to bring the charges against the abortionist, issued a statement, saying:

“We are shocked at this morning’s disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down. Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller’s family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ.”

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, who has also been closely involved in Tiller’s case, issued a brief statement saying simply that he and his coalition “condemn” the shooting.

Jim Hughes, the president of Canada’s Campaign Life Coalition, and vice president of International Right to Life, also reacted to the shooting with dismay. “Not only is this sort of violence seriously damaging to the pro-life cause, it is also deeply contrary to everything that is meant by the phrase pro-life,” he told LifeSiteNews.com. “Those of us in the pro-life movement do not want to see abortionists die, we want to see them convert.”

Hughes speculated that the shooter may be someone who has been personally affected by abortion and was seeking revenge against Tiller. “May God have mercy on his soul,” said Hughes of the abortionist.

Fr. Pavone, the head of priests for life, also issued a statement, saying:” I am saddened to hear of the killing of George Tiller this morning. At this point, we do not know the motives of this act, or who is behind it…

"But whatever the motives, we at Priests for Life continue to insist on a culture in which violence is never seen as the solution to any problem. Every life has to be protected, without regard to their age or views or actions."

Martinez Sistach, the Cardinal Archbishop of Barcelona, Spain, said in a recent interview that abortion and abortifacient contraception are attacks on human life, comparing them to the mass murder of Jews by Nazi Germany during World War II.

Commenting on the murder of unborn children inside their mothers' wombs, Sistach observed that "the Bible teaches us that man and woman were created in the image and likeness of God. To touch a man or a woman is to touch God. To kill a human being is to kill God.  Historically, we have seen barbarities like the Holocaust."

Society, he said, "should respect human life however it is, because all of us have limitations.  If not, only some people could live, because we are in an egoistical and hedonistic society."

Remarking on the proposal by the ruling Spanish Socialist Worker's Party to allow adolescents as young as 16 to have an abortion without their parents' knowledge or consent, Sistach said that "society should make laws that promote life," and asked "how can someone have an abortion at 16 years of age without the consent of the parents, without them knowing?"

He also asked the Spanish government to act for the benefit of society, instead of merely pursuing votes. "I ask all politicians, who have a very noble and necessary task … not to think only about elections and votes."

The comments, which were made during an interview with the Catalonian broadcaster Catalunya Informacio, were widely reported in Spain as an attack on the government's planned reform of the nation's abortion law. If passed it will allow abortion on demand during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy, and dramatically lower the age of consent for the procedure.

The government is also proposing allowing the abortifiacient "morning after pill" to be sold in pharmacies without a prescription.

The proposals have sparked massive public protests, and a recent opinion poll indicated that a strong plurality of Spanish women and men are opposed to the new abortion legislation.  The more conservative People's Party is making it a major issue in the upcoming elections for the European Parliament.

A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, has found that 51% of Americans call themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42% "pro-choice." This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking that question in 1995.

The new results, obtained from Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs survey, represent a significant shift from a year ago, when 50% were pro-choice and 44% pro-life. Prior to the current poll, the highest percentage identifying as pro-life was 46%, in both August 2001 and May 2002.

The new survey documents comparable changes in views about the legality of abortion.  About as many Americans now say the procedure should be illegal in all circumstances (23%) as say it should be legal under any circumstances (22%), in contrast with the last four years, when public opinion tilted more strongly in favor of unrestricted abortion. 

Most people (53%) still say abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances; of these, 35% say it should be legal "only in a few circumstances," as opposed to "most circumstances."

Americans' recent shift toward the pro-life position is confirmed in two other surveys. The same three abortion questions asked on the Gallup Values and Beliefs survey were included in Gallup Poll Daily tracking from May 12-13, with nearly identical results, including a 50% to 43% pro-life versus pro-choice split on the self-identification question.

Additionally, a recent national survey by the Pew Research Center recorded an eight percentage-point decline since last August in those saying abortion should be legal in all or most cases, from 54% to 46%. The percentage saying abortion should be legal in only a few or no cases increased from 41% to 44% over the same period. As a result, support for the two broad positions is now about even, sharply different from most polling on this question since 1995, when the majority has typically favored legality.

The source of the shift came from among GOP ranks, according to the Gallup Values and Beliefs survey, where Republicans calling themselves "pro-life" rose from 60% to 70% since last year. About two out of three Democrats continue to identify as "pro-choice," virtually unchanged from recent years.

The swelling of the pro-life position since last year is seen across Christian religious affiliations, including an eight-point gain among Protestants and a seven-point gain among Catholics. 

"With the first pro-choice president in eight years already making changes to the nation's policies on funding abortion overseas, expressing his support for the Freedom of Choice Act, and moving toward rescinding federal job protections for medical workers who refuse to participate in abortion procedures, Americans - and, in particular, Republicans - seem to be taking a step back from the pro-choice position," the pollster comments. 

"That's a historic event from the pro-life perspective," American Life League president Judie Brown told LifeSiteNews.com today. She called the poll results are "excellent signs for progress."

Brown said the poll shows that grassroots-level pro-life education is paying off, and also that "people have begun to see through the deception of politicians who claim that they favor a woman's right but in fact don't favor anybody's rights, except the right to be re-elected."

Regarding the sharp upturn in pro-life identification over the past year, Brown agreed that the heavily pro-abortion agenda of President Odama has likely worked in favor of the pro-life movement.

"I think that people have now envisioned - maybe for the first time in some of their lives, because abortion has been decriminalized for so long - they envision an enemy who is very deceptive, and who never met an abortion he didn't like, and people are beginning to understand that, to see through him - and that's a great plus for us.

"As far as we're concerned, as pro-lifers, he [Odama] is helping us a great deal," said Brown.  "It's fantastic."
