The development of prenatal diagnostic technologies presents a constellation of moral issues -- with the diagnosis of Down syndrome front and center. Over the past several years, a marked decrease in the number of babies born with Down syndrome has been both observed and widely reported. This decrease can be traced directly to the decision to abort after prenatal diagnosis.

As Science Daily reports, a new leading article to be published in Archives of Disease in Childhood points to developments in the near future that will likely increase the diagnosis of Down syndrome [DS] during pregnancy. "New tests expected to be introduced next year will offer a simple blood test that poses no risk to the fetus and delivers a definitive diagnosis of one of more of the genetic variants of Down syndrome -- trisomy 21, translocation, or mosaicism," the journal reported.

The development of these new tests will almost surely make the practice of prenatal screening for Down syndrome more widespread. At present, the available tests pose some risk to the fetus and are invasive. The new tests expected next year are based on simple blood tests.

The new research is based on work by Dr. Brian Skotko, a clinical genetics fellow at Children's Hospital Boston. Skotko, who has a sister with Down syndrome, asks this haunting question: "As new tests become available, will babies with Down syndrome slowly disappear?"

His research reveals deeply troubling trends. Between 1989 and 2005, births of babies with Down syndrome decreased by 15 percent. As Science Daily explains, "In the absence of prenatal testing, researchers would have expected the opposite -- a 34 percent increase in births -- due to the trend of women waiting longer to have children; known to increase the chances of having a baby with Down syndrome."

In an article published in 2005, Skotko argued that doctors are often ill-prepared to discuss the diagnosis of Down syndrome with their pregnant patients. Chillingly, he also revealed that a significant percentage of the doctors "reported that they 'emphasize' the negative aspects of DS so that patients would favor a termination."

With the new technologies of prenatal diagnosis so close on the horizon, Skotko now sees a "true collision" on its way. "More women will be going through the testing process, which could lead to a lot of difficult, uncomfortable conversations between physicians and expectant patients."

The reason for the decrease in the number of babies born with Down syndrome comes into clearer focus when The Washington Post cites Skotko's research indicating that 92 percent of women who learn they are carrying a baby with Down syndrome choose to abort the pregnancy. That is more than nine out of ten.

The dimensions of the "collision" Dr. Skotko sees coming now come into view. If these percentages hold, the development of these new tests will almost certainly lead to a vast increase in the number of babies aborted after the diagnosis of Down syndrome.

This presents a grave moral challenge to the medical community -- and to the society at large. Medical care is a social good for which the entire society is responsible. The development of prenatal diagnostic technologies and procedures brings a moral crisis right to our doorsteps -- and our hearts. Will we see people with Down syndrome simply disappear?

In his 2005 article, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Skotko explained that prenatal testing for Down syndrome presents expectant parents with a simple choice -- continue the pregnancy or abort. He continued:

"Knowing this, health care providers have historically operated under the assumption that if a woman consents to prenatal screening or diagnosing, she must believe that having a child with DS would be an undesired outcome and wish to terminate her pregnancy if such a diagnosis were made prenatally."

Expectant parents should read that sentence over and over again, and so should those who counsel them.

As Dr. Skotko understands all too well, this moral crisis is not limited to babies with Down syndrome. He asks: "Should expectant parents be able to select out fetuses with an undesired sex? Should fetuses with genes that predispose them to adult breast cancer be prenatally identified? Should couples in the future be supported if they wish to terminate fetuses with genes correlated with sexual preferences?"

The fact that 92 percent of women who are told that their unborn child carries the high risk of Down syndrome choose to abort the baby should shock us all. What does that say about our devaluation of human life and human dignity? This can only mean that these women see a child with Down syndrome as not worth having -- and the baby as a life not worth living.

Dr. Skotko points to the new tests just around the corner and sees a collision coming. Given his important research, we had better see a moral crisis looming. The Culture of Death is gaining momentum before our eyes. Who will be next in line to be considered unworthy of life?

Commentary: Vicious, Venal and Violent…

These are really the only titles that adequately describe the murderous movement known as "pro-choice" or "pro-abortion." It is now frightening, though not at all surprising, how absolutely hardened and inhumane our culture has become because of this satanic force that has grown strong through 36 years of wholesale murder of God's precious innocents.

The pro-choice movement has made murder just a casual pastime now, part of the general round of things that the news reports routinely. Yet, how surprised should we be at this when we stand back and see the unclean spirit that is behind the movement whose sole motivation is death? The fruits of this movement are universally demonic: a callous disregard for the sanctity of life, the insane promotion of death through lies, distortions and hate-filled propaganda. The nastiness of this movement is no longer able to be contained.

If this were not evident prior to last Friday, then the killing of pro-life activist Jim Pouillon in Michigan on the eighth anniversary of 9-11 should make it clear. Literally every major pro-life organization condemned in categorical terms the killing of abortionist George Tiller immediately as it happened this summer; but we are still waiting to hear an outright condemnation of Pouillon's murder from Planned Parenthood or the National Organization for Women and other organizations that profit from and justify baby-killing. NARAL issued a pathetic "condemnation" which refused to recognize the anti-life motivation for this killing. After all, lies and killing are the business of these organizations: at six weeks, sixteen weeks or sixty-two years in Jim's case, they have no regard for the protection of the innocent if it does not support their anti-life agenda.

The summit of viciousness had to come, however, from the media, the propaganda mouthpiece for the killing industry. A local paper, The Flint Journal, published within 24 hours the entire legal record of the victim, including dismissed misdemeanors and traffic violations. Outside of the fact that this man was arrested and penalized numerous times precisely for his pro-life activism, have we ever heard of such a diabolic mockery of an innocent man's death? As far as I am concerned, Jim Pouillon will be granted a chance to stand up and testify against the editors of The Flint Journal on the day of their judgment. He will convict them of every vicious word. Woe to those journalists of iniquity! Their names will be blotted out of the Book of Life because they are sadistic enemies of life.

The evidence of pro-abortion viciousness is all around us for those who have eyes to see. HLI has documented thousands of cases of abortion violence and published the information on a special website (http://www.abortionviolence.com/). It should convince any reader that the pro-death movement is the most violent and hateful social movement ever known to man, without exception.

Don't forget the social impact of decades of "pro-choice" rhetoric either. If you think it has not had any effect on our youth culture, take a look at a smattering of the comments that appeared the day of the shooting on the NBC 25 (Mid-Michigan) news comment section. The few that I have published below show only a fraction of the hate. That is all I have the stomach to write today. We will pray for the dear pro-life martyr, Jim Pouillon, who literally gave his life for babies; but more than anything, let us pray for these vicious enemies of life who will have a great deal to answer for when they are judged by a more severe force of Justice than the internet.

Well-Known Local Pro-Life Activist Gunned Down in Michigan...

An elderly pro-life activist was shot multiple times and killed this morning in front of Owosso High School in Michigan while he was peacefully protesting abortion with a sign depicting a baby and the word "Life," according to local police cited in the Flint Journal newspaper.

Locals say that the victim, James Pouillon of Owosso, was well-known in the area for his pro-life activities. Columnist Doug Powers wrote on his blog that Pouillon, called “the abortion sign guy" by Owosso locals, was known for standing on street corners holding up signs with pictures of aborted children.

Pastor Matt Trehella of Missionaries to the Preborn said today that Pouillon had joined his organization for a few stops of a pro-life tour less than a month ago. "Jim was a selfless, soft-spoken, kind-hearted man. All who knew him, knew this," he said. "Please pray for Jim's family."

Trehella said that Pouillon was an elderly man who needed constant use of an oxygen machine.

Troy Newman, the President of Operation Rescue (OR), said that Pouillon was a friend of OR. "We are stunned by Jim's murder," he said. "We extend our condolences to the family and share in their grief over his loss. His life was characterized by his love and concern of the vulnerable, and he will be greatly missed.

"We denounce this senseless act of violence in the strongest terms, and pray that this murderer will be swiftly brought to justice."

Reports indicate that a second individual was shot and killed in a different area of the city earlier in the day, and the two shootings are believed to be related, according to Shiawassee County sheriff George Braidwood. According to M-live.com, the second victim has now been identified as Mike Fuoss, 61, the owner of a local gravel pit. Fuoss was found dead in his office.

Police have confirmed that a suspect - a 33-year-old Owosso man - was taken into custody at the suspect's home shortly after the 7:30 a.m. shooting. After being taken into custody he confessed to the second killing as well. Fuoss knew the suspected killer, according to police, and it is so far unknown if Pouillon did as well. The motive for either of the killings is not yet known.

However, Police Chief Michael Compeau said that Pouillon appeared to be a target. "I would speculate it was ... intended," Compeau said, according to the Associated Press. "He was out protesting right across the street from the high school ... and there (were) multiple people around there and that person was targeted."

A black car was parked near the scene of the shooting, where a portable oxygen tank lay in a front yard next to a large sign with the word "Life" and an image of a baby.

In the wake of the tragedy, Fr. Pavone of Priests for Life told LifeSiteNews.com that he hoped to see "a strong expression of indignation from the pro-abortion community, just like there was a strong expression of indignation from the pro-life community at the killing of Dr. Tiller."

Secondly, Fr. Pavone called for "a renewal of unity within the pro-life community, coming to one another's assistance supporting one another, and by no means allowing fear or intimidation to have any role in our lives, but rather to move forward in peaceful organized ways to stand against this evil of abortion."

In the new book " Fatal Misconception: The Struggle to Control World Population," Columbia University historian Matthew Connelly shows how the population control movement created "future projections as evidence" of overpopulation, then justified "casualties" in the war on population caused by coercive methods. These included such "shock attacks" as quotas for millions of shoddy vasectomies and IUD insertions without follow-up care, public humiliation of poor families with three or more children, bulldozing entire neighborhoods that displaced countless thousands of the poor, and knowingly unloading defective IUDs that crippled poor women.

According to Connelly, when Malthusian theories used to justify eugenics fell out of favor, population controllers invented new theories. Founding members of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) returning from the Vietnam War, transferred the counterinsurgency tactic of "population control" to USAID's strategy. Chinese missile scientist Jian Song used computer generated modeling to create the appearance of "precise forecast" of disaster for China if the government did not limit women to bearing one child.

Africa, along with India, was the target of many such contrived scenarios, even though according to Connelly "the continent was a net food exporter and featured some of the lowest rates of growth in the world." What's more, he says family planning advocates ignored the fact that fertility was already falling in China and in other target countries, and ignored the "accumulating body of evidence showing that high fertility was not, after all, correlated with poverty." He demonstrates that fertility rates fell in developing countries between 1950 and 2000, whether or not they were subjected to population assistance programs.

Despite the facts, the movement's tactics became increasingly coercive in the late 1960s, due to the zeal and connections of people like U.S. Army general William Draper. Working with John D. Rockefeller, Draper helped convince President Johnson to include population control in the 1965 "war on poverty." Johnson tied humanitarian aid to developing nations' achieving fertility benchmarks set by the UN and USAID, even vetoing food aid shipments to India in the midst of its dire famines.

Draper founded the Population Crisis Committee, today's Population Action International, with the goal of creating an American public sense of urgency by tapping into the fears of the day, such as drawing a causative link between the lack of family planning in the slums with the chaos caused by youth in the late 1960s and calling for a "crash program for population stabilization."

Along with former Secretary of Defense and World Bank President Robert McNamara, Draper convinced Congress to earmark unprecedented levels of funding for USAID population programs between 1967 and 1971. So much money flooded into the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) that officials did not know how to spend it. This, along with growing skepticism in the third world of U.S. backing - then 90 percent of the total - led Draper to call for the creation of a fund centered at the UN which would "sanitize" U.S. funding, give the appearance of international consensus, and circumvent national governments. The initiative became the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

Dying for Green? ABC game tells you when you deserve to die...

"Get the dirt on greenhouse without the guilt trips," the site proudly proclaims. "Just fun and games and the answers to all your enviro-dilemas [sic] ... Use our greenhouse calculator to find out when you should die!"

"Professor Schpinkee's greenhouse calculator" allows people figure out "how your CO2 production compares to the Average Aussie greenhouse pig, and to an environmentally-sustainable greenhouse 'pig.'" Once a person answers all 10 questions, he can click on the skull-and-crossbones to know when he should die "so you don't use more than your fair share of the earth's resources."

Situated between an "Aussie pig" generating 24.6 tonnes of CO2 and the "green pig" generating 3.0 tonnes of CO2, a player can figure out who should live and who should die at what age depending on their use of the planet's resources or more accurately their total carbon usage.

Playing the game will let you know that ABC believes the average working class Aussie should die at 9 years of age for consuming too much of earth's resources. The eco-pig, however, "should die at age 77."

A rough estimate of CO2 usage of an ordinary family provider, who is unable to make "eco-friendly" investments because he needs to support his family, shows that he will have used up his share of the earth's resources by 2.7 years. Third-world inhabitants would average between 25-30 years before their time was up.

However, the calculator offers the secret to living forever without having to give up anything that emits CO2, like private jets, gas-guzzling SUVs, and the hot air of endless environmental conventions. The "green calculator" shows that all one has to do is consume material resources with abandon, but have enough wealth to invest in environmentally friendly businesses to go negative with carbon usage.

Unfortunately those unable to invest, including the working class and poor of rich nations obsessed with global warming must radically alter their standard of living, despite having no real chance of deserving to live more than 30 years, even in destitution.

Those interested in perusing the site can watch episodes of "Greena" and play the Planet Slayer game as "X-ON" in order to slay the planet or as the red-haired olive-drab Greena to save the planet. Winning a level as Greena shows a clip of Greena and her dog chained to a tree shouting "never surrender!" Winning at "slay the planet" lets gamers watch X-ON spray Greena in the face with chemicals. Gamers should be warned that excessive game-play uses up precious carbons and reduces the time they deserve to live on Earth according to the site's global warming "greenhouse" standards.

Although the search for clean, alternative sources of energy is to be commended in and of itself, the environmentalist movement has a history of overreaching. The ethanol story is a case in point. Of course the farmers are happy that another major, government-subsidized market for their products has arisen - and we at the Population Research Institute (PRI) like farmers. But the ethanol story begins with a radical environmental push for renewable energy. And what better source of renewable energy, they argued, than one of the principal crops of America's farmers: corn.

It turns out that this is a lousy idea from several points of view. First, as studies have demonstrated, it costs twice as much to make a gallon of ethanol from corn as it does for a gallon of gasoline, even though gasoline is nearly twice as efficient.

In addition, according to a Cornell University study, although ethanol might burn cleaner than gasoline, the amount of oil and coal that must be consumed to produce it is so disproportionately huge that ethanol production is actually contributing to the energy crisis, not helping to resolve it. The huge machines that plant, fertilize, and harvest the corn used to make ethanol run on diesel, after all, and the fermentation plants run on electricity.

Not only is ethanol not worth the cost of producing it, the drive to make ever more ethanol is cutting severely into the food supply.

According to an article published last year by Business Week, the dent in American food production alone has been dramatic. "In the U.S., last year's [corn] harvest was 10.5 billion bushels, the third-largest crop ever," it reads. "But instead of going into the maws of pigs or cattle or people, an increasing slice of that supply is being transformed into fuel for cars.

The roughly 5 billion gallons of ethanol made in 2006 by 112 U.S. plants consumed nearly one-fifth of the corn crop. If all the scores of factories under construction or planned go into operation, fuel will gobble up no less than half of the entire corn harvest by 2008."

The very liberal New York Times columnist Paul Krugman pointed the finger at politicians: "You might put it this way: people are starving in Africa so that American politicians can court votes in farm states." But this is only part of the story. Politicians in non-farm states vote for ethanol because it is extremely popular with the environmental lobby.

And what does the radical environmental movement do? Assisted by its minions in the media, it is once again blaming "overpopulation" for rising hunger around the world.

"Debate Grows with Philippines' Population," writes Bruce Wallace of the Los Angeles Times, "As the food crisis looms, who's to blame?" The answer from this bastion of liberal sentiment is not, as it should be, environmentalism run amok, but the old stand-by: overpopulation.

Although the article concedes that the population growth of the Philippines is slowing dramatically -- families are now averaging only 2.5 children -- he still sides with the population fear-mongers in blaming the food shortages on too many people. The environmentalists cited in the article deny that their beloved biofuel movement is sending much of the world into starvation. Instead they attempt to shift the blame onto their favorite culprit -- the world's people, in particular, the world's poor.

This is not surprising. It is well-known that those with a pronounced Green outlook on life believe human beings to be nothing more than a cankerous sore on the face of the earth. Their "environmentally friendly" solutions to perceived problems often ignore the costs that such programs impose, especially upon those least able to bear them, the poor.

The cost of turning massive amounts of food into fuel is, by now, obvious. The Green Revolution, which doubled and tripled grain production around the world, is being undone. Nevertheless, these costs mean little to the Big Green, which seems perfectly happy to manufacture a crisis, as it has in this instance by causing a shortage of food, and then once again lay the blame at the feet of human fertility.

And why not? Thomas Malthus held that overpopulation would naturally be checked by the food shortages and starvation it brought about. He thus advocated a hands-off attitude toward world food crises, insisting that we allow "overpopulated" areas to starve themselves back into balance. The modern environmentalist movement's approach is similarly deadly -- a breathless advocacy of abortion, contraception, and sterilization-with an eye towards reducing the number of people in the world.
