Looking After a Eucharistic Miracle in the Basilica of St. Francis in the City of Siena...

Since 1997, Franciscan Father Paolo Spring has had a mission fully related to his vocation: to look after the Eucharistic miracle that is in the Basilica of St. Francis in the city of Siena.

Every week he receives dozens of pilgrim groups, from children preparing for their first Communion, to foreigners who take advantage of their trip to this city full of art, history and spirituality, to see one of the most impressive Eucharistic miracles: that of 223 hosts consecrated 280 years ago, still intact in one of the basilica's side chapels.

On receiving the faithful, the priest recounts the story of the miracle in English or Italian and, on recounting it, marvels at the fact, as if it were the first time he heard the story.

"They come from all over the world where there are Catholics. They come to see the miracle. When they arrive, they sing, are moved and weep with joy," said the priest in conversation with ZENIT.

A joy that is infectious and renews the priest himself, despite the fact he has known the story for a long time. He still remembers the first time he saw these hosts: "At the end of the 70s on a pilgrimage when I came here I learned about the miracle in depth and I thought: It must be well looked after, it must be made known, we must work so that, whoever comes will understand it and will leave with this miracle in his heart."

Stolen Treasure

The miracle occurred Aug. 14, 1730, eve of the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. That day in all the churches of Siena the priests consecrated additional hosts for those who might wish to receive the Body of Christ the following day.

That night all the priests of Siena met in the main cathedral of the city for a vigil, leaving their respective churches alone. Some thieves took advantage and entered the Basilica of St. Francis to steal the gold chalice with the consecrated hosts.

The next morning it was discovered that the hosts were not there and a group of faithful found the upper part of the chalice in the middle of the street. Thus it was verified that the Body of Christ had been stolen. The inhabitants of Siena began to pray so that the hosts would be recovered.

Three days later, while a man was praying in the Church of St. Mary of Provenzano, very near the Basilica of St. Francis, he noticed that there was something white inside a box for donations to the poor. Upon investigation, the box was found to contain 351 hosts -- the same number of hosts that had been stolen.

"Those three days were like the days between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection," reflected Father Spring. 

The hosts were full of dust and cobwebs. The priests cleaned them with great care. Then there was a day of adoration and reparation. Thousands of faithful arrived in the basilica in thanksgiving for the finding of the hosts. They were not distributed, it seems, because the Franciscans wanted the pilgrims to adore them until the moment they deteriorated (because on being deteriorated, the real presence of Christ would disappear).

But the hosts remained intact. The people began to consider them miraculous and increasingly pilgrims went to pray before them. A few were distributed on special occasions.

Presence

Today, 280 years later, 223 hosts remain, in the same state they were in the day they were consecrated. 

"At different stages they have been examined and they physically retain all the characteristics of a newly made host," explained Father Spring.

In 1914 the most rigorous examination of this miracle was carried out by order of Pope St. Pius X. 

"The Sacred Particles turned out to be in perfect state of consistency, lucid, white, perfumed and intact," Father Spring said.

The examination also concluded that the stolen hosts were prepared without special precautions and kept under ordinary conditions that, in normal circumstances should have caused deterioration.

On Sept. 14, 1980, Pope John Paul II traveled to Siena to celebrate the 250th anniversary of this Eucharistic miracle. On going there, he said, "It is the Presence." Personalities such as St. John Bosco and Blessed Pope John XXIII have also prayed before these holy hosts.

For Father Spring, the Eucharistic miracle of Siena "represents a proof of the love of God for us and the presence to sustain us against doubts, difficulties -- the miracle with which God the Father is helping the Church not to be afraid, to live the presence of her founder sent by the Father to do his will."

"Here two miraculous things happen," explained Father Spring pointing to the hosts consecrated almost three centuries ago. "Time does not exist, it has stopped"; and "composite bodies and organic substances are subject to withering. For these hosts, neither fungus nor elements that break them down subsist. It is a living, continuous miracle. We do not know until when the Lord will permit it."

Jesus gives us His Heart in the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Sacrament of His Love...

Mother Theresa…
In 1963 the nuns in Mother Theresa’s convent started making a Holy Hour each week. In 1973 she and her sisters started making a Holy Hour each day and then her religious order began to really grow and blossom. Today she is legendary. She has hundreds of convents around the world and thousands of nuns in her order taking care of the poor. This is an example of the fruits from making a daily Holy Hour before Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

One hour…
Our Lord is asking you as He did His disciples in the Garden of Gethsemani; "Could you not watch one hour with me?"  Everyone should make a Holy Hour each week. If you are really a fully dedicated worker of Our Lady and if you really want Our Lady of the Roses apostolate to grow and blossom, you will make a Holy Hour each day.

Weekly Holy Hour...
Malachi Martin said that in June 1988 Pope John Paul II wrote a letter to the universal Church asking each bishop to institute in every parish every week an holy hour of adoration.  He asked that the Rosary and suitable prayers be said for two motives; that the Holy Ghost would send good priests to the Church, and that the chastisements mentioned at Fatima would be mitigated.

A dying young mother cured of cancer...
Father Aloysius Ellacuria, C.M.F., founder of the Missionaries of Perpetual Adoration, had a young mother come to him in the early 1970’s, eyes filled with tears, an aching body saturated with cancer, and given little hope to live.  He took her into the chapel asking her, "Have you ever asked Our Lord to cure you?"  "No," she replied.   "Well he said, "Let us kneel down right here in the front of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and ask Him to cure you.  You know Our Lord is really present in the Most Blessed Sacrament; do you believe that?"  "Yes," she promptly replied.
    Father continued, "Our Lord is the same as He who walked on this earth 2,000 years ago; and who blessed the sick and healed the sick.  Do you believe that He is the same Lord that is living here in this Most Blessed Sacrament?"   "Yes, He is," was her pain filled response.  "Well, He cured them and He can cure you."  Together they prayed a series of Our Father’s, Hail Mary’s, and Glory Be’s.  After three of each the woman, startled, said: "Father, I don’t think it is necessary to continue to go on – I feel healed."
    The next day X-rays were taken of the young mother and the astonished doctor said: "All the cells that were attacked by cancer are now like the cells of a new-born baby."
    This was but one of the many cures Father Aloysius witnessed while imploring assistance from Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

The "Little Miracle"...
Father Leloir was interned at Buchenwald, where at 6 p.m. each day the prisoners and deportees were lined up for inspection by the S.S. troops.  On the evening of August 23, 1944, Father Leloir had carefully concealed on his person a small white envelope containing six consecrated Hosts, which he intended to distribute secretly among his comrades. The presence of the Blessed Sacrament on the person of the priest was known to several fellow-prisoners.
    Consternation filled all when the soldiers began to search the prisoners one by one. What would be the fate of the priest when the envelope containing the Hosts was found? Too well they knew what punishment would be given him.
    And what unspeakable irreverence would be done to the Sacred Hosts!
    Down the line the S.S. troops contemptuously searched each man, and finally came Father Lelior’s turn. Into his pockets one after another the Nazi soldiers pried, and found the “evidence.” Father Leloir stood erect, a trifle pale, but silently praying to the Lord whose Precious Body was within the folds of the white envelope. His companions trembled and grew faint.
    With an insolent air the S.S. guard tore open the envelope. Several prisoners gasped. Father Leloir stared in open amazement-as the Nazi soldiers threw the envelope scornfully to the ground saying: “Just an empty envelope.”
    Just an empty envelope! The Hosts had disappeared! To prevent the desecration of the Sacred Hosts and to save the priest and his fellow Catholics from certain punishment, perhaps death, Our Lord had worked this “little miracle!”

Flying Hosts...
One of the last Sundays (June 21^st or 28^th, 1970) at the seven o’clock Mass, in the Beauceville church (Quebec, Canada), the parish priest, Father Charles Eugene Houde (about 50 years old) was the celebrant.  He had already told his parishioners that they were permitted to receive the Holy Host in their hands, according to the directives given by the Archbishop of Quebec.  This day, before the Mass, he told his parishioners the following: “Henceforth, to avoid complications, everyone of you will receive the Host in your hand for Communion."  That was against the Bishop’s directions that allowed the people the freedom to take the Host either in their hand or in their mouth.
    At the moment of the Communion of the Mass Father Houde turned to the people, holding the Ciborium in his hand.  Before he had time to take a single Host and take a single step, about fifty consecrated Hosts flew out of the Ciborium by themselves.  They went up into the air, circling themselves around and around the priest, then slowly fell to the ground.
    Father Houde was so struck by the prodigy that his faced turned white as snow and for a few minutes he remained motionless.  Being interiorly inspired he said to the faithful who were approaching the altar, “Henceforth, all of you will receive the Holy Host on your tongue, not in your hand, because God just gave us a sign.”
    The priest knelt down and picked the Holy Hosts scattered on the carpet, and distributed Holy Communion.  Back in the presbytery he said, “Never again in my life will I give Holy Communion in the hand.”
