Perth, Australia Experiences Storm of the Year...

Colin Barnett has declared the devastating storm that hit Perth a natural disaster as the city escaped the threat of more hail, lightning, gales and flooding this afternoon.  The Premier's declaration means those affected will be eligible for funds through the WA natural disaster relief and recovery arrangements, which provides for payments to individuals, small businesses, government departments and farmers.  Local governments will be able to use these funds to rebuild community assets.

The Insurance Council of Australia has declared the storms a "general insurance catastrophe". About 12,000 insurance claims had been lodged so far today, according to Council WA spokesman Karl Sullivan.  Mr. Barnett earlier said the storm had caused "well over $100 million damage".  The Premier's announcement this afternoon came as the Bureau of Meteorology cancelled a second storm warning.

Earlier, the Bureau had said there was a risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with damaging winds, hail and flash flooding likely for areas south of a line between Lancelin, Cunderdin and Hopetoun.  Regional director Mike Bergin said Perth would probably be spared from a repeat of yesterday's fury, but "the threat is far from over" for areas in the south of the state, especially between Albany and Bunbury.

Fire and Emergency Services Authority area operations manager Paul Ryan said people with damaged homes needed "to do the best they can" to prepare for more possible wind and rain.  Large parts of the city are still blacked out, schools are closed, traffic lights are out and insurers face a damage bill into the hundreds of millions after the freak storm battered the city last night.  The city recorded its fifth-highest March daily rainfall in 134 years of records, and its wettest March day for 39 years.

Widespread blackouts

About 19,900 homes remain without power today, including 6000 in Canning Vale, after more than 158,000 houses were blacked out at the height of the storm last night.  Western Power expects most of those still without power will have supplies restored this evening, though several hundred homes could be without electricity for up to three days while damage is cleaned up.  North Perth households are expected to have power restored by 4pm.

Fellow utility Horizon Power, which services the North-West, had also sent crews to help restore electricity.  Western Power managing director Doug Aberle said four substations had been knocked out by lightning - Canning Vale, North Perth, North Beach and Claremont.   About 110 power lines fell to the ground, and there are still about 250 electrical hazards left for crews to fix, about 100 fewer than at the peak of the storm.

Mr. Barnett said now that the situation was under control and into the clean-up phase, patience was needed as emergency crews worked to get power restored to affected areas.  "The storm was obviously an extreme and freak event," he told radio 6PR. "All emergency services responded superbly (and) were on duty throughout the night."  He urged people to continue to behave carefully, responsibly and be very courteous throughout the day.

Mr. Barnett said that since "the last major storm in 1994" about half of Perth's power lines had been put underground, which would aid the clean-up effort this time around.

Peak-hour traffic hit

The blackouts are likely to repeat the chaos that hit peak hour traffic yesterday, with 60 sets of traffic lights still out across the city.  About 37 of these were being manned by police this morning, including parts of Albany Highway, Reid Highway, Orrong Road, Wanneroo Road, Roe Highway, Scarborough Beach Road and Leach Highway.

Drivers have also been warned to avoid Mounts Bay Road after the downpour triggered a mini-landslide from Kings Park. The road was closed from Winthrop Avenue to the city in the eastbound direction. Two of the westbound lanes have been re-opened, but the left lane remains closed. There was also heavy traffic congestion this morning on Thomas Street/Loftus Road.  Armadale Road is reportedly flooded near Lake Road in Seville Grove.

Police will be out in force for the evening peak, warning motorists that there is still plenty of water on roads.  Trains and buses are now running on schedule, apart from buses having to deviate around Mounts Bay Road.  Some trains had to slow down through the Subiaco tunnel about 5.30am, due to flooding.

Public Transport Authority spokesman David Hynes said the pumps in the tunnel pumping water out broke down, as did back-ups. The PTA then had to hire pumps.  Some Smartrider ticket machines were also not working this morning after falling victim to the lightning strikes and subsequent power cuts. Those commuters charged a default fare yesterday, after being unable to "tag off" due to machines not working, will have those automatically waived, Mr. Hynes said.

While motorists suffered, so did luxury car dealers. Reader photos sent in to WAtoday.com.au revealed the damage at Audi Centre Perth, while others were lucky to escape.  Auto Classic dealer principal Darrin Brandon said the dealership was "very, very fortunate" that just two of its vehicles were damaged, after getting all its vehicles under cover, but clients were not so lucky.

The Victoria Park business suffered a flooded basement, but there had been an "endless stream" of luxury vehicle owners in today to get their pride-and-joy repaired.  "It's probably some of the worst damage I've seen in a long time, and I've seen storms in Europe and the eastern states," Mr. Brandon said.

Trail of destruction

The State Emergency Service has received more than 2000 calls for help across metropolitan Perth since yesterday afternoon, and more than 300 SES volunteers worked through the night and through today.  Perth's northern suburbs bore the brunt of the storm, with more than 1100 calls for help. Suburbs in the cities of Stirling, Wanneroo and Joondalup and Town of Vincent were worst hit. 

South of the Swan River, suburbs in the cities of Canning, Gosnells and Melville were also badly affected. FESA chief operating officer Craig Hynes called on the public to be patient, as the agency's resources were stretched. About 900 jobs were still outstanding this afternoon.

Kings Park landslide

The heavy rain caused a landslide at Kings Park, sending a river of mud cascading past Jacob's Ladder and down onto Mounts Bay Road, burying and crushing two cars. The landslide flooded the Adelphi and Waldorf apartment blocks with mud, causing 68 residents to be evacuated to the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre overnight.

Engineers conducted a structural assessment this morning. City of Perth chief executive Frank Edwards said Jacob's Ladder would remain closed until further notice.  Structural damage to buildings in the city "appeared to be minimal," Mr. Edwards said.

Urban search and rescue squads went through the building yesterday evening, amid fears one person was missing. However, that resident was located.  Major flooding was recorded on major roads throughout the city, including Marmion Avenue, the Mitchell Freeway, the Mt Lawley subway, Wanneroo Road and Pinjar Road.

Insurers swamped

The RAC has called on members making insurance claims to be patient.  WA's largest home and motor insurer said it had received 6000 claims today, with a value of more than $10 million.

RAC spokesman Glen Walker said early indications were that the damage could rival the storm of May 2005 - which was one of the worst to hit the State.  Mr. Walker said fixing homes with structural damage was a priority and the RAC was doing everything it could to help members.

SGIO operations manager Sandra Robinson said the insurer had allocated builders to most badly damaged homes of its customers.  "SGIO will look to help co-ordinate emergency accommodation, where necessary, and we will coordinate builders and tradespeople to help our customers repair damage to their homes," she said.

HBF pleaded with members to email, rather than phone, despite doubling the number of call-takers, "to give those with urgent claims the chance to be helped first", general insurance general manager Steve Hollows said.

The insurer expected to make record payouts for repairs to car windscreens and home windows, and its nominated glazing suppliers were already operating at full capacity.  It encouraged members to locate their own supplier and arrange for repairs to broken windows and windscreens themselves, rather than wait until lodging a claim.

Building advisory service Archicentre said water-damaged buildings could take months to dry out.  "The natural tendency for people to renovate and redecorate as quickly as possible can lead to mould growth and the work having to be repeated," state manager Brad Cook said.  Westpac and St George banks have announced relief packages for customers affected by the storm, including deferring home loan repayments.

Hospitals, airports hit

Homes have been destroyed, with commercial property and infrastructure also damaged after the severe hail storm and 35mm of rain hit the city about 4pm yesterday.  Two storm fronts battered the northern suburbs before heading south towards the city.

Planes were stranded at both Perth airports after the deluge caused parts of the terminal roof to collapse. Perth Airport and Qantas have confirmed that international and domestic flights returned to normal this morning.  The SES has had reports of structural damage to several major hospitals and aged care facilities, including Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, and elective surgery has been cancelled at all hospitals today as a precaution.

Four hospitals are still on Code Yellow (internal emergency) - Royal Perth, SCGH, Swan Districts and Hollywood.  Health Department state coordinator Andy Robertson said most problems with hospitals had been fixed, with elective surgery to resume tomorrow, including at RPH and SCGH.

Schools closed

Several schools will remain closed tomorrow, among them Brookman Primary, years 8-11 at Duncraig Senior High, Lynwood Senior High, Heathridge Primary, kindergarten and pre-primary at Hollywood Primary, Mindarie Senior College, North Perth Primary, years 8-10 at Perth Modern School, Ocean Reef Senior High, Quinns Rocks Primary, Shenton and Tuart Colleges and Tuart Hill Primary.  Heathridge, Hollywood, Lynwood, Ocean Reef, Quinns Rocks, Shenton, and Tuart College will all remain closed for the rest of the week.  All the above schools were closed today, as was John XXIII College.

Eighty percent of Shenton College classrooms were flooded and 70 percent of Ocean Reef SHS had flooded, while ceilings have also collapsed there.  One of the libraries at the University of Western Australia was flooded, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars damage. Windows at historic Winthrop Hall were also blown out by the storm, and the University's theatre venues suffered extensive damage.

Parliament has not been spared from the storm either, with the Legislative Council committee office put out of action.

Weather warnings

The storm that hit yesterday was one of the biggest in Perth for many years, with wind gusts of more than 120kmh and 40.2mm of rain falling in the Bureau of Meteorology's Mt Lawley rain gauge in the 24 hours since 9am yesterday.  Of that, 23.4mm fell in the 30 minutes after 5pm yesterday.

Other areas were even worse hit. Wanneroo received 62.8mm - about four times its average March rainfall - while Jarrahdale got 57.2mm, Gosnells 53mm, Anketell 48.8mm, Swanbourne 48mm and Perth Airport 41mm, including 19.8mm in seven minutes from 5.05pm yesterday.  The rainfall at the airport was the highest recorded there on a March day since records commenced in 1944.

Mr. Bergin said it was a "very significant and rare storm, the worst we've seen in 16 years".  Cool air in the upper atmosphere drifted over WA during the end of the weekend, enhancing a surface trough that was already firing storms through the interior.

The rain has not given an expected much needed boost to the parched state's water supplies, with Water Corporation general manager of customer service Ashley Vincent saying that little had fallen in the dams supplying Perth.  However, the power cuts had led to breakdowns in pumps at some sewage stations, Corporation spokesman Phil Kneebone told Radio 6PR.

Perth had received a meager 0.2mm of rainfall in the year to yesterday, and no significant rain had fallen in the city for 122 days.  The average rainfall for March is 21mm, but with the most recent downpour, Perth now has about its average amount for the first three months of the year.

Warnings gone by unnoticed . . .

 The Father plans a gradual cleansing of earth . . .
    Our Lady - "Intellectual pride, My children, has been the downfall of many.  You will not enter the Kingdom unless you strip yourselves of this pride and return to Us as little children.
    "Sin and abominations have been accepted in your country and in the world as a way of life.  Whatever shall We do with the souls who are coming fast over the veil unprepared?  Whatever shall the Father do with them?"
    "When the Chastisement is given to man, it will not annihilate the world as in the time of the floods, My children.  No, the Father plans a gradual cleansing of earth.  With the return of My Son, there will remain only the sheep." (5-30-73)

The Blood of the Lamb...

Angel of Death will pass by...

   Jesus - "We demand a crucifix, because demons - many of the highest ones in the realms of hell cannot stand the sight of a crucifix.   They will not approach your door.  I give you this knowledge, My children, though it is not common knowledge, My children, though it is not common knowledge upon earth, that the crucifix has great power against satan." Homes saved form Hurricane Gloria...
    Jesus - "My child, We specifically brought you here this evening after the last trial of the past week.  This was allowed to come upon you with no destruction to your home.  However, you knew the fear of fleeing to the mountains.  We directed you, My child, and you did well.  And you escaped having to suffer the hours of darkness, and the sound of the howling of the winds, and the rise of the waters.  But, My child and My children, it will happen again, but this time it will claim lives.
    "Do not be affrighted, My child; I did not say that this will happen to your home on Long Island again.  You suffered not the moments of terror.   We did not wish for you to succumb from sorrow at that time, My child, so We sent you to the mountains; and you returned once the winds had died down to find a home still intact.
    "I must reveal, My children, to the world again, that you are to keep a crucifix on your front door and your back door. All entrances to your home must be guarded by the crucifix.  There has not been one home on Long Island that had a crucifix on its door that did fall to any evil.  I do not speak of the trees, My child; I speak of mankind.  You did not know a major disaster as has happened, My children, in Mexico.  You see, My child, I set you down in that area to bring the word to mankind, and it was through these words that many listened and the passed through the horrible experience of a hurricane."     Many people have had their homes protected from disaster by having a crucifix on the outside of their outside doors.

Dear Bayside Shrine Workers,
    A tornado passed through our town of Westlake, Louisiana early in the morning of January 13, 1995.  No damage came to our house, but two trees fell down in my mother’s front yard.  The electric light utility pole on my mother’s house broke during the storm, and a neighbor said he saw a big flash of fire spread right across the utility pole on to the top of my mother’s roof, but no damage came.   The fire vanished almost immediately. My trailer was rocking with the wind, so was my grandmother’s trailer house, too, but no damage to either one of them.  An electric fire also flashed over my grandmother’s trailer on the roof, but no damage.
    My mother, my grandmother, and my sister--we all have blessed wooden crucifixes on the outside doors of our houses.  We also have the blessed Rose Petals, the holy statues of Our Lady, and the Green Scapulars in our homes.  We all give thanks to Our Lady of the Roses for sparing us any damages on our homes.  Also, our Bayside group gets out the Bayside directives and the messages of Bayside in our area.   We believe this work has spared our area from much disaster in the past of floods, tornadoes and storms.

Crucifixes on door saves H & H Store...
    On June 30, 1984, Jesus said: "And also, My children, I ask you again to place a crucifix upon your door.  Both front and back doors must have a crucifix.  I say this to you because there will be carnage within your areas, and this will pass you by if you keep your crucifix upon your doors."
    Let us now see the factual proof of Heaven’s protection, to those who follow Our Lady’s counsel.  At a "Stop ‘n’ Go" shop at the corner of Jackson St. and Orange Ave. in Paramount, looters broke the windows and cleaned the store of $20,000 to $40,000 in merchandise, including freezers.  One clerk there exclaimed, "Everything was taken!" Two weeks later it was just starting to reopen again to customers.
    Three blocks away, at the corner of Garfield Ave. and Alondra Blvd., was a different story. "H & H Store," also in Paramount, suffered six broken windows, not including the broken glass front door.  Yet with this difference: Nothing was taken.  Owner Juliette Cota gratefully affirmed, "Nothing taken!   Not even a bar of soap!"  A great mystery, considering several of the broken windows were large enough for the looters to easily pass through.  So what was the difference?  The owner had been warned by a local Bayside believer to put up a crucifix on the front door, and she did.  A believer herself, she is now also telling others why her shop was spared.  Her son, fearful of future riots, is desirous to sell the shop and move.  Juliette, the mother and owner, confidently told us, "I am not afraid."

Dear Veronica,
    I sent you a picture that I feel is a miracle of Our Lady of the Roses.   We have the picture, a beautiful statue of Our Lady of the Roses.  On the outside, outdoors it is.  As you know, we in Oakland, California, had a terrible disaster fire that destroyed 3,500 homes.  I am enclosing this special statue picture. It was not touched by the fire, which destroyed all the homes in the block.   I feel this is a precious moment and a photo of the power of the Virgin Mary of the Roses.  Now for our own home, three homes were destroyed by fire, all around ours.   Here is the whole thing.  In your literature sent me, it was mentioned to place a crucifix on your doors, which I did.  The fire destroyed our roof and some trees but our home was spared from destruction.  I truly believe the Blessed Mother protected our home because all homes around us, in back of ours were completely destroyed.   I thought this was noteworthy, and please thank the Blessed Mother of the Roses in one of your visitations.  I pass out all rosaries and scapulars I get and I am dedicated to serve the Blessed Mother and Jesus as long as I live.  From Oakland, California

    Another lady near the Atlantic Ocean had her camping trailer protected with crucifixes on the doors when Hurricane Hugo came through South Carolina.   No damage whatsoever when homes near were blown away.  Even the lattice leaning against the bottom of her trailer was not washed or blown away.

    A gentleman from New Orleans reported his home was spared, when all his neighbors lost the roofs of their houses in a hurricane.  He had one shingle missing and he thought that was gone before the storm.

    In the San Francisco earthquake, a lady was living on the second floor of an apartment building with crucifixes on the doors.  After the earthquake, her apartment was on the first floor.  The apartment below her lost everything.   She didn’t even have one dish break.  The great power of the crucifix!   Can you afford not to have crucifixes on your doors?
