Priests Use Internet to Recruit New Parishioners...

Benedict XVI showed he's also the Holy Father of the digital world when he recently instructed priests to use online social networking to reach the faithful.

Seminarian Victor Amorose of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Tampa said the pronouncement went viral in his circle of virtual "friends."

"Everybody on Facebook had it on their status update," said Amorose, 28. "To hear the Holy Father telling the church in general, calling all priests to do it, is pretty cool."

Amorose is two years from graduating with a master's degree in divinity, a requirement for becoming fully ordained. As a priest in training, he said, he already uses Facebook to spread the Gospel by posting Scripture passages for his status updates.

He anticipates that Facebooking, Twittering and blogging will connect more and more with future parishioners.

Amrose said his goal is, "Anything that can get people thinking more about God but without being super pushy."

"I don't want to be one of those people whose status updates are clogging up the wall.'

Amorose said he agrees with the pope that, used correctly, online networking can be a tool of God.

"I think this connectedness, this idea of being together no matter where you are, is attractive. It's what we want," Amorose said.

The Catholic church is also using sites like Facebook to recruit candidates for the priesthood, according to Father Len Plazewski, director of vocations for the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

Plazewski's job is to mine high schools and colleges for potential priests. After receiving tips about a prospect, he uses the social networking site to connect.

"They're there. You can find out what's going on in their lives," Plazewski said, adding that the online interaction helps youths realize that priests are people too. An avid traveler and Tampa Bay Lightning fan, Plazewski posts photos and updates that reflect his hobbies and interests.

Plazewski said the church has always changed with technology, and figures if early leaders were alive in 2010, they'd be online, too.

"Obviously, St. Paul wrote letters. If he was around today, he would have at least sent them by e-mail," Plazewski said.

Although the priest embraces the digital world, he acknowledges setting limits.

"I don't do all those app things and games and everything," he said. "I have enough things to do without getting shot by the mafia or attacked by zombies."
