Westminster just received a dose of some of the finest theology written in the last half-century. That might sound over the top, but this fact is widely acknowledged: even if Joseph Ratzinger hadn’t entered the clergy, he would have been a world-famous academic and theologian. The speech he delivered in Westminster Hall was as profound, then, as it was historic.

“The role of religion in political debate,” he said, is “… to help purify and shed light upon the application of reason to the discovery of objective moral principles.” He continued: “Without the corrective supplied by religion… reason too can fall prey to distortions, as when it is manipulated by ideology, or applied in a partial way that fails to take full account of the dignity of the human person.” And it’s a two-way process, he said: "reason should serve to purify and structure religion, too."

It is worth bearing in mind that when the Pope delivers an address like this, he is doing something very different to the politicians who were listening to him today. Unlike the Blairs and Browns of this world, his words – in every context – are a product of decades of experience, reflection and study. He does not try to appeal to his audience.

As I wrote in my Catholic Herald column this week, the role of religion in political life is one of the great themes of Pope Benedict’s theology:

After criticising bigoted “pathologies in religion” in an essay addressed to Jürgen Habermas, the famous German secularist, Joseph Ratzinger concludes: “There is a hubris of reason that is no less dangerous. Indeed, bearing in mind its potential effects, it poses an even greater threat – it suffices here to think of the atomic bomb or of man as a ‘product’.

“This is why reason, too, must be warned to keep within its proper limits, and it must learn a willingness to listen to the great religious traditions of mankind. If it cuts itself completely adrift and rejects this willingness to learn, this relatedness, reason becomes destructive.”
