Church Sign Opposing Same Sex Marriage Tampered With...

Observer Today reported on July 9, 2011:

The Lake Shore Chapel on Route 20 in the town of Pomfret has had its share of crime in the past week.

After the New York State Senate passed the law permitting same-sex marriage two weeks ago, it put a message on the sign in front of the church.

"As a Christian I feel it is my moral obligation to say this state lost its compass on this," Rev. Byron Lutz said in a phone interview.

The sign read "On 6/24/2011 - N.Y. morally died! - Revive us Lord."

According to Lutz, June 29 was the first time the sign was tampered with. Late the night before the letters on the board had been taken down and trash was left at the chapel's door.

Later in the week a large yellow poster board sign was hung over the church's message. According to Lutz, the sign read "1. The job of a Christian is to love people 2. God will judge." Below this there was a cartoon with four stick-figure people with one's thought bubble saying "I'm gay, God loves me."

The chapel contacted authorities but up to that point no damage had been done.

But Thursday night, between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 4 a.m., some vandals returned and this time stole some of the letters on the sign.

After the theft the sign read "On / 4 20 - .Y. died! - us or." A total of 21 letters were taken.

The matter is being handled by police.
