Pope Benedict XVI Says Yes to Catholics in Politics But Not For the Fulfillment of Personal Interests...

"Learn a simple lesson from the past, My children. When the morals of a country start to go down into darkness, and the teachings turn from God to man, that country will soon be ended. First the spiritual life and then the material life of your country shall be destroyed." - Jesus, October 2, l976

Vatican Insider reported on October 9, 2011:

"It is fine for Catholics to be in politics but not for personal interests, while brutal crime injures the social fabric." A week after the "conclave" of Catholic associations in Todi, with the president of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), Angelo Bagnasco, held in the industrial area of Lamezia Terme, in the Southern Italian region of Calabria, the Pope called for Catholics to form "a new generation of men and women capable  not only of promoting personal interests, but also the common good." After reminding people of the Church's commitment to educate through social teaching and Bible study, the Pope called for a greater presence of believers in public life.

"New Generation" is the same expression that Benedict XVI used in 2007 in Cagliari, urging Catholics for the first time to prepare a new generation of socially and politically committed individuals. "Equally appropriate –Pope Benedict XVI stressed in his homily for the Mass celebrated in Lamezia Terme, after quoting the Lectio divina initiatives for the formation of Christians initiated by the diocese - is the School of Social Doctrine of the Church, both for the articulated quality of the proposal, as well as for its widespread dissemination."  Furthermore, Joseph Ratzinger hoped that "these initiatives will give rise to a new generation of men and women capable not only of promoting personal interests, but also common good.”

He then expressed a desire to "encourage and bless the efforts of those, both priests and lay people, who are engaged in the formation of Christian couples for marriage and the family, in order to give an evangelical and competent response to the many contemporary challenges of family and life."  The comparison with earthquakes was meant to stick in people’s memories. "If we observe this beautiful region, we recognize it as a seismic land, not only from a geological standpoint, but also from a structural, behavioral and social point of view - Benedict XVI stressed.  In other words, a land where the problems that arise are acute and destabilizing; a land where the level of unemployment is concerning, where often brutal crime injures the social fabric, a land where you have the constant feeling of being in an emergency.

In an emergency, the people of Calabria were able to respond with surprising readiness and availability, with an extraordinary ability to adapt to discomfort.  I am sure that you will overcome the difficulties of today to prepare for a better future."  Therefore, the Pope called for commitment by "institutions "and the "intercession of the Virgin" for "the most serious social problems" of this territory and the whole of Calabria, especially with regards to work, young and disabled people, who require increased attention from everyone, especially the institutions." During the Angelus recited at the end of the Mass celebrated in the former Sir industrial area (which according to the police was attended by more than 40 thousand people), the Pope invoked the example of the saints and Christian faith for the regeneration of Calabria.

"The faith of the saints renews the world - he said as he recalled that in the afternoon he would be going to Serra San Bruno in the footsteps of the German saint. With the same faith with which you, today, are renewing your beloved Calabria."  The message to the people of Calabria is a sign of hope in the certainty that "you will know how to survive the difficulties of today to prepare for a better future."  Therefore, "never succumb to the temptation of pessimism and close yourself in. Call on the resources of your faith and your human capacities; strive to grow in the ability to collaborate, to take care of each other and all the public goods, safeguard the wedding garment of love; persevere in the witnessing of human and Christian values, which are so deeply rooted in the faith and in the history of this land and its people."
