Bishop Olmsted Strives For Proper Understanding Of Communion...

"When a man has stepped over the threshold and allowed himself to fall into mortal sin, he must be purified by trial, but he must also, My children, be purified by the rule of penance and confession.

The Wanderer reported on November 24, 2011:

 In issuing new norms for the distribution of Holy Communion under both kinds in his diocese, Phoenix Bishop Thomas Olmsted emphasized that people should have a proper understanding of the sacrament.

The November 17 issue of the diocese’s Catholic Sun newspaper had a front- page story about the rules, as well as a half page carrying the text of these norms. In addition, Olmsted devoted an entire page of the tabloid- size newspaper to his column explaining how the norms “ can help us participate more deeply in the sacred mysteries of Christ’s Body and Blood.”

The newspaper also carried a full Spanish- language translation of his column.

A proper understanding is needed, Olmsted said, because of widespread lack of knowledge of the sacrament’s significance.

“A study conducted just last year shows that 40% of American Catholics say that a person can be a ‘ good Catholic’ without believing that, in Mass, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ,” Olmsted said. “Other studies also have shown that, sadly, a large percentage of Catholics believe that the Eucharist is simply bread and wine.

“ This presents a serious challenge for pastors, priests, parents, catechists, and indeed all Catholics who — understanding and experiencing the power of Christ in the Holy Eucharist — wish to help their fellow Catholics encounter the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist,” the bishop said. “ This transformative encounter requires faith in who and what the Eucharist is.”

Since the Second Vatican Council, he said, the practice of Communion under both kinds has gradually grown.

Under the norms, Holy Communion in the diocese under both kinds “ is permitted whenever it is judged appropriate by the priest to whom a given community is entrusted, provided that certain conditions are met,” Olmsted said.

Olmsted said that profanation of the sacrament doesn’t mean simply intentional disrespect but also an attitude that the consecrated Species is ordinary.

One of the conditions for distributing under both kinds, he said, “ is that ‘ there exists not even a small danger of the Sacred Speciesbeing profaned.’ The word ‘ profane’ literally means ‘ outside the temple.’ It denotes the treatment of a holy thing as if it were common. “ Profanation does not only mean that the Sacred Species is intentionally abused or mistreated, but simply that it is treated as normal food and drink. This begins with understanding, interior attitude, and the authenticity of faith, even before it involves outward actions,” Olmsted said.

The bishop also warned that distribution under both kinds shouldn’t mean that so many extraordinary ministers of the sacrament are present that the significance of the role of priest and deacon is obscured. “ This allows the bond between the ministerial priesthood and the Eucharist to be clearly on display,” he said.

“. . . The reality of the Eucharist is made visible, we might say, in the priest himself when he descends from the sanctuary to distribute Holy Communion,” Olmsted continued. “ For this reason, pastors must always take care that the use of both kinds does not necessitate so many extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion that this essential symbolic role of the priest and deacon might be overshadowed.”

Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, who wrote the “ What Does the Prayer Really Say” column for The Wanderer, commented at his blog that he was impressed by Olmsted’s being “ mainly concerned with making sure the Church’s norms are followed and that CUBK [ Communion under both kinds] be both reverent and spiritually fruitful.

“So, the most important part of Bishop Olmsted’s norms is not the list of occasions when CUBK can be distributed. The most important part of the norms is the clear explanation of the conditions for CUBK,” Zuhlsdorf commented at “Fr. Z’s blog — What Does the Prayer Really Say?”

Zuhlsdorf noted that the Diocese of Phoenix earlier said the new norms would be more restrictive about distribution of the Precious Blood, which stirred up some opposition in media comments.

“ My impression is that, all along, Bishop Olmsted was trying to make sure that CUBK was leading to spiritual benefit rather than irreverence, indifference, and even profanation of the Blessed Sacrament,” Zuhlsdorf said.

“There were missteps on the part of the diocese in the process of developing and issuing the norms, and there was obtuse mean-spiritedness in the press on the part of those who attacked him,” he continued.

“ In the balance, however, both the missteps and the final outcome have served to underscore that our reception of Holy Communion has conditions, and there are norms which regulate what we do,” Zuhlsdorf said. “ We must obey the norms and strive to fulfill the conditions in order to receive the graces Christ extends to us, and to avoid scandal which undermines the faith others have.”

Under the headline “ Phoenix bishop reverses ruling on wine for Communion,” a November 12 story in the Phoenix- based Arizona Republic said that the Phoenix Diocese’s auxiliary bishop, Eduardo Nevares, “ said Olmsted consulted with others to devise the final guidelines, including Archbishop Gregory Aymond of New Orleans, chairman of the [ U. S.] Bishops’ Secretariat for Divine Worship.”
