The Cardinal Newman Society Blog reported on May 2, 2012:

Last week, the University of Notre Dame announced it would not add sexual orientation to its nondiscrimination clause. The decision was reportedly a “collective decision” made by top Notre Dame administrators, including Fr. John I. Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president.

That announcement sparked a number of protests including a student led vigil, a number of professors speaking out, and now 113 faculty on campus have signed a public letter urging the administration to change its mind. They referenced other Catholic colleges and universities already having done so to push Notre Dame.

Here’s the text of the letter.

In a press release, Notre Dame stated it would not change the wording of the nondiscrimination clause, but would take other steps to help LGBTQ individuals feel more included on campus.

We are writing to express our support for the 4-to-5 movement and for the members of the LGBTQ community at the University of Notre Dame. We value the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning members of our community exactly as we do all those who are part of the Notre Dame family. As faculty and staff, we affirm that our offices and classrooms will be safe and open spaces, where anti-GLBTQ discrimination, harassment or violence will not be tolerated.

We thank the graduating students and others who have worked so hard to bring LGBTQ concerns to the forefront. Their efforts have made and will continue to make a difference. We also applaud the recent efforts of Notre Dame to create a more welcoming and safe environment for all. We encourage the University to continue its progress by joining with the City of South Bend, our sister college St. Mary’s and other Catholic colleges and institutions across the country to make the protection, recognition, and equal treatment of the GLBTQ members of our family an official part of University policy. We look forward to the day when the Spirit of Inclusion describes not just an aspiration of some, but the everyday experience of all of us who are Notre Dame.

There’s some evidence that these public protests are having an effect as the University just announced that it will delay until fall a decision about whether to recognize a gay-straight alliance. In February, the Notre Dame Student Senate even passed a nearly unanimous resolution requesting that the University approve the application. This approval has reportedly been sought for more than 25 years but the university has always refused…until now.

The student co-president of the Progressive Student Alliance called the announcement of a delay “very encouraging.”
