Archbishop Lori Invokes Saint and Scholar Who Died for Religious Freedom...
"Pray, My children, a constant
vigilance of prayer. I ask you in your country, the Americas, to pray, or you
shall follow the same path as Portugal. The forces of evil are gathering within
the United States. Your leaders are giving themselves to corruption, too proud
and arrogant to be simple of heart and get down on their knees to beg guidance
from the Eternal Father in Heaven.

recognize the faces of evil and the forces of evil about you! It is a sad fact
that those who are leaders are setting examples of depravity, debasement. They
cover themselves with the spirit of darkness. You will pray much for your

Since many Catholic colleges and universities are in the forefront of the effort to preserve religious liberty, it seemed only fitting that Archbishop William Lori’s homily kicking off the Fortnight of Freedom would highlight the courage of a scholar and university chancellor, Saint John Fisher, who gave his life for the cause of religious freedom.
Before a standing room only crowd at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore, Archbishop Lori recalled that a few years before he’d been “stranded” in London due to inclement weather just before Christmas. He noted “the unexpected pleasure” of visiting such places as Tyburn Hill, where many English martyrs, including Saint John Fisher and Saint Thomas More, laid down their lives.
Fisher, as Chancellor of Cambridge University, opposed King Henry VIII’s attacks on the authority of the Church and was ultimately martyred because he refused to recognize the King Henry as the head of the Church in England.
“We have gathered on the eve of the feast of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, martyrs who laid down their lives rather than violate their consciences or their sacred principles,” said Archbishop Lori. “Their courageous witness of faith continues to stir the minds and hearts of people yearning for authentic freedom, and specifically, for religious freedom . . . just as it inspired those who came to Maryland a century later in 1634, seeking not only to worship God freely but indeed to practice their faith publicly.”
For Archbishop Lori, St. Thomas More represents an individual who seeks, in the words of U.S. bishops, “[to] connect worship on Sunday to work on Monday” and also “[to] carry the values of our faith into family life, the market place, and the public square.”
Fisher, however, symbolizes the struggle to maintain religious freedom for Church institutions and ministries such as our schools, universities and charities. “We surely are not facing the dire brutality that confronted St. John Fisher,” Archbishop Lori said. “But our Church and her institutions do find themselves today in perilous waters.”
Perilous waters indeed. The government is trying to force Catholic institutions, as well as Catholic individuals, to accept an HHS mandate that would require them to violate their consciences.
“Now it is up to us to defend the Church’s freedom to fulfill her mission to freely manifest the love of God by organized works of education and charity,” Archbishop Lori exhorted the faithful. “This is why the Church has engaged the Administration so earnestly, this is why we are working for legislative protection from the Congress, this is why, thankfully, so many have filed lawsuits in various parts of the country, and this is why there is a Fortnight for Freedom. . . so that the Church would be free of that government interference which St. John Fisher warned against in the British Parliament in the 16th century!”
Archbishop Lori concluded his homily by saying, “If freedom is a system based on courage and if the motive of democracy is love, then let us strive in God’s grace, throughout this fortnight and beyond, to be men and women of courageous love for the glory of God, for the good of the Church and for love of country.”
Archbishop Lori received a standing ovation from the more than one thousand people who attended the Mass.
It was a grand beginning to the 14-day campaign of prayer, fasting, education, and public action dedicated to protecting our religious liberties. Catholic parishes and dioceses across the country will be hosting Masses, parades, lectures, and other activities to highlight the effort.
