Cleveland-area Catholics showed their support for American nuns recently scolded by the Vatican by attending a rally Wednesday night at St. Colman Catholic Church on the city's West Side.
An estimated 650 people attended, making it the largest of the 53 vigils held across the country in support of the nuns, said Christine Schenk, executive director of FutureChurch, a Catholic organization headquartered in Cleveland.
The Pentecost prayer service was a reaction to the Vatican's April 18 statement that chastised the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, an umbrella organization that represents most U.S. nuns, for alleged doctrinal irregularities and making statements that "disagree with or challenge positions taken by the bishops, who are the church's authentic teachers of faith and morals."
That group represents more than 80 percent of the 57,000 nuns in the country.
The criticism, which befuddled parishioners and some clergy because no specific actions were addressed, drew the ire of many in attendance.
Coletta Normile and Nancy Sheldon drove from Rocky River to the parish on West 65th Street near Lorain Avenue to support the nuns and criticize church leaders.
"Nuns are the CEOs of the hospitals, schools, orphanages and prison ministries," Normile said, "and now they are coming down on them for helping the poor? They should take care of their pedophile priests before scolding these women."
Added Sheldon, "They are wonderful women who work hard for little pay, and they follow the precepts set by the Lord. These are not women who are radical feminists. The Vatican should clean its own house before they start cleaning others."
The Rev. Mark Hobson, the priest at Church of the Resurrection in Solon, said he was not surprised by the size of the crowd because nuns hold a special place in the hearts of Catholic Christians.
"Nuns are precious to the Catholic faithful. ... They have brought zeal and creativity to the ministry," Hobson said. "This can be threatening to people who feel things should always remain the same in the church.
"There is an old expression that you don't touch Mom. In the Catholic faith, you don't touch Sister. Like moms, nuns have a special place in our hearts."
At one point in the vigil, the dozens of nuns who were in the audience were asked to stand and they received a lengthy applause.
The Rev. Robert Begin of St. Colman said there would have likely been more in attendance except parking around the church is limited. St. Colman's can seat 1,000 people.
"The people of Cleveland appreciate the sisters," he said. "They taught us the faith when we were kids, and we have tremendous respect for them."
And that was the case with Anne Marie Nocella from Sheffield Lake, who admired the three rows of nuns in attendance who taught her at St. James parish and Magnificat High School.
"They all had a significant effect on my life through education and ministry," she said.
"My child, I wish
you also to make note in your heart and the hearts of all mankind that I am much
despaired, as Theresa, Our Little Flower, is much despaired at the lack of
numbers in the nunneries. Vocations are needed for the priesthood, and also for
the nunneries.
"Are there not any who care to come forward and dedicate their lives to
save Our young children? Please, My children, surely among you, those who hear
My voice or will read this written word, can you not give your life to win your
reward forever in Heaven? And perhaps also, those you love you can bring with
you. So many little souls are crying. They thirst for the knowledge of Jesus and
all of Heaven. Will you not solace them and comfort them in their loneliness?
They are like sheep out in the wilderness, astray with no leaders. They are
wandering. And what do they feast upon but weeds. No good nourishment is being
given them. Will you not, My children, you who are children of the light, come
forward and become nuns, nuns with good hearts, with a good foundation of the
