Bishop Adamec in opposition to the Pope

Several Roman Catholic dioceses screen out potential candidates to the priesthood because of gay sexual orientations. The Altoona-Johnstown Diocese, however, is not one of them, says Bishop Joseph Adamec. Bishop Adamec says that the issue that is important is celibacy, not sexual orientation.

That is not the position of the Church, nor of the Holy Father. In a February 1961 document, the Vatican made it very clear that homosexuals were not to be admitted to ordination:

"Advancement to religious vows and ordination should be barred to those who are afflicted with evil tendencies to homosexuality or pederasty, since for them the common life and the priestly ministry would constitute serious dangers.... They are not fit subjects for the religious life."

The Holy Father’s spokesman, Joaquin Navarro-Valls, recently stated that no man demonstrating homosexual tendencies can be ordained to the priesthood.

So what’s Bishop Adamec’s problem? Does he have a better way than the Church? Does he disagree that homosexuality is intrinsically evil? Does he disagree that homosexuality is one of the four sins that cry to Heaven for vengeance?

Bishop Adamec doesn’t seem to get it: "If the person is able to live a celibate life, in other words the orientation is one thing but acting it out and living it is another, then I think that we would need to take that into consideration."

Bishop Adamec, if you were truly compassionate, you would seek to convert sinners from paths that lead them to hell, you would protect the innocent children by not ordaining potential predators, and you would shelter the flock from the wolves instead of opening the gates.

Catholics of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese, you will be to blame if you do not defend the Holy Father and the Church teaching from shepherds teaching in error. If homosexual seminarians and priests who say they are not “acting out” turn out to be lying, who will be the victims? The children. And innocent children will again be victimized because the Pope has been ignored by bishops like Bishop Adamec who are following themselves, instead of the Gospel of Christ.
