Cardinal Maida of Detroit fails to excommunicate pro-abort “Catholic” candidate Jennifer Granholm. He has a yellow streak down his back...

How is it that the pro-abortion “Catholic” Jennifer Granholm continues to escape condemnation of Cardinal Maida?

The fruits of abortion are nuclear annihilation and condemnation to hell...

Fr. Fessio, S.J. believes that even worse than the sex-abuse scandal is the spiritual abuse of the Catholic faithful, which he defines as the widespread failure by American Catholic Church leaders to teach and defend Catholic truth. Fr. Fessio says, “What we are seeing today is a crisis in fidelity to Catholic truth: in accepting that truth on the part of the faithful and the priests, and on enforcing and defending that truth on the part of Bishops."

A September 3, 2002 CNS news reports that Nancy Restuccia of Canton, a Detroit suburb, led a protest at Cardinal Maida's residence and joined other pro-life activists in delivering a to the cardinal concerning pro-abortion candidate Jennifer Granholm. Restuccia states that "Public officials who espouse abortion rights are indirectly colluding in the taking of human life. I feel that he [Cardinal Maida] has a responsibility as Ms. Granholm's bishop to keep her from going into dangerous territory for her own soul."

The Holy Father cites as an error a view held by pro-abort Jennifer Granholm, that a “politician, in his or her activity, should clearly separate the realm of private conscience from that of public conduct.” (Evangelium Vitae, #69). He also points out that popular consensus will never determine what is good or what is evil, and furthermore states that Catholics may not obey an unjust law (such as the permitting of abortion on demand in the United States): “In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to ‘take part in a propaganda campaign in favor of such a law, or vote for it.” (Evangelium Vitae, #73)

Obligation of the bishops...

In 2000, Bishop James T. McHugh of Rockville Center, Long Island, New York, sent a letter to all the priests in his diocese laying out a policy banning pro-abortion politicians from the premises of Catholic institutions in the diocese. In his September 21, 2000 letter, Bishop McHugh wrote: "The policy... means that no pro-abortion public official or candidate is to be invited to address Catholic agencies or organizations, school or parish groups, even if he/she does not intend to express their pro-abortion views." The bishop explains, "The reason for this is that it would be foolish and counterproductive to provide a platform to those who favor or support a public policy of abortion on demand or of euthanasia or assisted suicide. It would also be extremely misleading to provide such persons a platform to promote their views, even on other issues, lest they claim that the Church somehow implicitly tolerates their rejection of Church teaching on pro-life issues."

In 1996, Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska excommunicated all those Catholics in his diocese that retained membership in various organizations, including the pro-abortion Planned Parenthood organization.

In 1995, Archbishop William Levada gave very clear instruction against those who claimed to be pro-abortion Catholic politicians:

“The individual politician, like any Catholic, who is at odds with the teaching of the Church about the principle involved, i.e., that abortion constitutes the killing of innocent human life and is always gravely immoral (cf. Evangelium Vitae, nn. 57-62), has an obligation to reflect more deeply on the issue, in the hope of allowing the persuasive character of this infallibly taught teaching to become part of his belief and value system. I say infallibly taught not because Pope John Paul II has assumed in Evangelium Vitae the special prerogative recognized for individual papal teachings in the First Vatican Council, but rather because he has called attention explicitly to the fact that Catholic teaching on abortion has been an infallible doctrine of the Church by virtue of the universal ordinary Magisterium, recognized for the teachings of the Pope and worldwide college of bishops together by the Second Vatican Council. It should be clear, then, that every Catholic is required to accept this teaching as a matter of faith, and that any Catholic who would deny it would separate himself from the unity of Catholic faith and practice which is the fundamental condition for Church membership. Here I note by way of aside that Catholic "membership," unlike that of some other religious bodies, is not a matter of "enrollment" but rather of "belonging" to the Body of Christ, whose condition is the full profession of Catholic faith and the reception of Baptism as the beginning of a life of sacramental worship and moral living in accord with the teachings of Christ.” (Catholic Sentinel, June 2, 1995)

There are some Catholics who erroneously believe that such actions are “uncharitable” or unduly severe, but nothing could be farther from the truth. A lawful public excommunication is truly an act of mercy to the recipient of the excommunication, as this public excommunication puts the person on notice that his or her eternal salvation is in the balance. An excommunication is the administration of spiritual medicine with the intention to bring about the conversion of the sinner, to bring that person back to the saving teachings of the Catholic Church. As Dietrich von Hildebrand writes, “a love without a firm authority is irresponsible and, finally, destructive.” (The Charitable Anathema, p. 14) A bishop who falsely claim he is being “pastoral” by allowing pro-abortion “Catholic” politicians to spread their poison with impunity in his diocese is really a bishop without true zeal or love for souls. In reality, such a bishop is irresponsible and is allowing the pro-abortion “Catholic” to continue on the road to hell and to take many other Catholics along with him.

Dietrich von Hildebrand explains that Church leaders who do not condemn error are shirking their responsibility:

“Because it is the divinely-willed mission of the Church to distinguish heresy from orthodoxy in order to safeguard the integrity of the depositum fidei, it follows that the Church can never permit an alleged unpopularity of authority to inhibit it from defining the truth and, correlatively, locating and denouncing error. The efficacy of the authority of the Church depends on the divine will that ratifies its exercise, not on the extent of its popularity in a given epoch.

“To suggest that the anathema (which is the clearest expression of authority and most called for when confusion is greatest) should be replaced by a patient and loving admonition is to ask the Church to shirk its mission.” (Dietrich von Hildebrand, The Charitable Anathema, p. 15)

Tell Cardinal Maida that he is committing a grave sin of omission as a Catholic bishop by not protecting his flock from the poisoned pro-death views of Jennifer Granholm.

"The sin of omission shall condemn many to hell, be they layman or hierarchy. I repeat: not the sin of commission, but the sin of omission will commit many to hell. Among them there will also be mitres (cardinals and bishops)." - Our Lady, October 6, 1980
