GLASGOW, Mar 10, 03 -- In his efforts to stave off war in Iraq Pope John Paul II is seeking to broker a compromise in which Saddam Hussein would go into exile, according to a Scottish newspaper report.

The March 9 edition of the Glasgow Sunday Herald reported that the Pope was a driving forced behind an initiative that would give Saddam Hussein and 50 of his military leaders a last chance to leave Iraq and thus to avert military action. The Sunday Herald report said that the plan was being discussed at the UN Security Council.

The plan-- introduced by Saudi Arabia with the help of the Holy See-- would reportedly offer Saddam Hussein a 72-hour period in which to accept exile. Iraqi military leaders might be offered amnesty if they agreed to cooperate with UN officials in a disarmament drive.

The Sunday Herald pointed out that the Vatican-backed plan, offered as an amendment to an existing US resolution setting a deadline of March 17 for Iraq's complete disarmament, "would provide an attractive compromise that would let the French come on board" in support of the US resolution.

If Saddam Hussein refused the exile offer, the Sunday Herald speculated, the UN would approve military action-- unless ranking officials inside Baghdad staged their own coup to oust Saddam and take advantage of the offer.
