Russia Central Bank stops supporting the US Dollar, US Dollar sell off continues in Eastern Bloc and China...

Russia, China, and Eastern Bloc countries continue to sell off of billions of US Dollars and buying billions in gold and Euros. But Russia did the same thing - drop support of the US Dollar just before 9-11...

Pravda 13:20 2004-10-22 The weighted average dollar exchange rate was 29 RUR/USD in the first 90 minutes of trade at a special session today. Thus, the official dollar rate for October 23-25 will decrease by RUR0.12. This is the most considerable one-day drop of the dollar against the ruble since late April. The low on the deals was even 28.95 RUR/USD at the UTS. According to commercial bank dealers, the Central Bank has not supported the dollar despite a large selling of dollars by market participants.

Russia’s Gold and Forex Reserves Exceed $100 Billion

For the first time in Russia’s history gold and currency reserves have exceeded $100 billion, according to information provided by the Central Bank of Russia on Thursday, Oct. 21. As of Oct. 15, 2004 the volume of the country’s gold and foreign currency reserves amount to $100.1 billion, having grown by almost $2 billion in one week, since Oct. 8.

Earlier the Central Bank authorities forecasted that Russia’s currency reserves would only reach $100 billion by the end of the year. However, high world oil prices and the financial authorities’ decision to contain ruble growth have prompted the reserves to grow at a much faster pace than expected.
