A new report and proposed legislation have raised alarms among pro-life advocates, highlighting the practice of abortion centers disposing of the remains of aborted babies in public water systems, potentially contaminating drinking water across the United States.

According to a recent report by Liberty Counsel Action, an estimated 30-40 tons of fetal remains and abortion pill byproducts are flushed into public water systems annually, a practice that pro-life advocates describe as both ethically abhorrent and a public health concern. The report notes that wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to process such remains, raising questions about contamination and oversight.

“Nearly 700,000 times a year in the U.S., women take abortion pills, flushing the resulting remains straight down toilets and into our public water systems,” said Abigail Forman in a broadcast reported by The Vigilant Fox. “Aborted fetuses, some up to two inches long, are being flushed down toilets, clogging pipes, and traumatizing wastewater workers who find them trapped in treatment screens.”

The Respectful Treatment of Unborn Remains Act, introduced on June 25 by Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, and Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., aims to address this issue by prohibiting abortionists from discarding aborted babies in garbage disposals or toilets that feed into federal, state, or local water infrastructure. Violators could face fines and up to five years in prison.

“Every life is precious and has value, from the moment of conception until natural death,” Gill told The Daily Wire. “Not only does abortion rob an unborn baby of their life, but abortionists further rob them of a dignified burial by carelessly discarding their fetal remains into public water systems — a disgusting and abhorrent practice.”

The legislation has garnered support from major pro-life groups, including Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, Priests for Life, and Students for Life Action. Early House cosponsors include Reps. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif., and Mary Miller, R-Ill.

“Beyond the moral outrage, introducing fetal remains into public water systems also poses a serious public health concern, potentially contaminating water sources,” Gill added.

The bill responds to long-standing concerns about abortion clinic practices, exemplified by the case of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell, convicted in 2013 of multiple counts of murder. During his trial, investigators revealed that Gosnell’s clinic flushed baby remains down toilets and garbage disposals, leading to plumbing backups and gruesome discoveries, including a baby’s arm that “popped out” on a street during maintenance work.

“They were shoving body parts down the garbage disposal,” testified Philadelphia Police crime scene investigator John Taggart, according to The Daily Mail. “To the point where they plunged it one day and an arm popped out on Lancaster Avenue.”

Pro-life advocates argue that the lack of federal regulations has allowed such practices to persist. While some states require fetal remains to be buried or cremated, others have no such rules, enabling abortion providers to dispose of remains through public water systems.

“This isn’t just drinking water. This would be shower water, water you wash your hands with as well, correct?” Maria Zeee asked Forman in the broadcast. “CORRECT,” Forman replied. “It’s disturbing on many levels.”

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not commented on the issue, prompting criticism from pro-life groups. “They told women to flush the remains. Now it’s in our water, and no one is stopping it. The EPA won’t even talk about it,” a post on X by The Vigilant Fox stated, reflecting public sentiment.The Respectful Treatment of Unborn Remains Act seeks to restore dignity to aborted babies and address environmental concerns, marking a significant step in the broader pro-life movement to protect the sanctity of life.

“We are proud to introduce a bill that restores some dignity after death, as part of the greater fight to protect all life from the evil of abortion,” Gill said.

The bill’s progress in Congress is being closely watched by pro-life advocates, who hope it will set a precedent for stricter oversight of abortion clinic practices nationwide.
