As Miraculous Medal Feast Coincides With Thanksgiving, Faithful Have Special Chance To Offer Gratitude To Our Lady...
"I AM ALWAYS YOUR MOTHER"
"Always remember, call Me,
My children. I am your Mother, your Mother of peace, your Mother of grace. I am
always your Mother, now and in the hereafter. When you come across the veil, My
children, you will fully understand how your works of mercy and caring have
brought you across the veil to Heaven." - Our
Lady of the Roses, June 18, 1988
REMEMBER
"Remember, keep your sacramentals
constantly upon you: your brown Scapular, your St. Benedict medal, the
Miraculous Medal, and also the medal of Our Lady of the Roses. You must keep
them upon you, with a crucifix. We demand a crucifix because demons, many of the
highest ones in the realms of hell, cannot stand the sight of a crucifix."
- Jesus, June 18, 1987

By Mary Rose
This year, the Nov. 27 Feast of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal shares the calendar with Thanksgiving for the first time in more than 10 years. A day focused on gratitude serendipitously coinciding with a feast centered on God’s graces poured out through Mary gives the faithful an opportunity to revisit the story behind the medal, learn what its symbols represent, and further appreciate why it has transformed so many lives.
How the medal began
In 1830, a young Daughter of Charity and future saint, Sister Catherine Labouré, received several apparitions of the Blessed Mother in her convent chapel in Paris. In one vision, Mary appeared with rings on her fingers, each set with jewels. From most of the rings, rays of light flowed down toward the earth.
Sr. Catherine asked about these rays. Mary explained that they were the graces God gives through her intercession. Some rings shone but gave off no rays, Mary said, because they represented the graces for which people didn’t ask.
Mary then instructed Sr. Catherine to have a medal made exactly as she saw.
The front side of the Miraculous Medal
The medal is small, but each image is intentional.
At the center stands Mary, standing on the globe. This shows two truths:
- Her Immaculate Conception — preserved from sin from the first moment of her life.
- Her role as Queen and Mother of all God’s children, watching over the world with a mother’s care.
Beneath her feet lies the serpent, crushed. This fulfills God’s promise in Genesis 3:15 that the woman and her offspring would defeat the serpent. The medal reminds us that Christ’s victory over sin and evil is already won, and Mary shares in that victory.
From Mary’s hands flow rays of light, representing the graces God wants to give the world. Some of her rings glow without rays, the graces that remain unopened because people do not ask.
Around the image is the prayer Mary herself taught Catherine:
“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” This prayer proclaims Mary’s unique gift of being conceived without original sin and asks for her help with the trust of a child approaching a mother.
The back side of the Miraculous Medal
At the top of the reverse side is a large letter M intertwined with a cross. The cross rises from the center of the M. It teaches that Mary is inseparable from Jesus. Her life and mission always point toward Him and help lift His Cross before the world.
Beneath this symbol are two Hearts, side by side.
- The Sacred Heart of Jesus, crowned with thorns and topped by a small flame: His love that willingly suffers for us
- The Immaculate Heart of Mary, encircled with roses yet pierced by a sword: her perfect love that shares in His suffering and never wavers
Surrounding the entire design are 12 stars, recalling the “woman clothed with the sun” in Chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation. They remind us that Mary is Mother of the Church, and that her victory is tied to the victory of all God’s people.
The name of the medal
Originally it was called simply “the Medal of the Immaculate Conception.” But in 1832, a deadly cholera epidemic swept through Paris, killing more than 20,000 people. The Daughters of Charity began distributing the new medals, and almost immediately, reports of healings, protections, and conversions began pouring in.
People quickly began calling it “the Miraculous Medal.” The name spread everywhere and has never changed.
One of the most famous miracles was the sudden conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne, a banker strongly opposed to the Catholic faith. As a dare, he agreed to wear the medal. Moments after stepping into a church in Rome, he saw the Blessed Mother exactly as she appears on the medal. He was instantly converted, later becoming a priest.
The promises of the medal
Our Lady told Saint Catherine “All who wear this medal… will receive great graces.”
These graces aren’t limited to physical healings, though thousands have been recorded. Mary promised protection in danger, help in spiritual struggles, and an increase in the grace needed to grow in holiness. She especially emphasized that those who wear the medal with trust will receive abundant graces.
Many saints loved this medal: Maximilian Kolbe, Mother Teresa, and Pope John Paul II among them. And millions of ordinary Catholics have experienced help, peace, conversions, and protection through it.
Mary told Saint Catherine, “Come to the foot of this altar; there, graces will be shed upon all who ask for them with confidence and fervor.”
Gratitude for divine graces
With this feast landing on Thanksgiving this year, the message feels especially timely. The Miraculous Medal is a daily reminder that God is near, that His Mother watches over us, and that grace is always available, often more than we remember to request.

"The judgment of your God is not akin to the judgment of man. The Eternal Father will only judge by the heart. Your rank, your accumulation of worldly goods does not set you up before another. Many have sold their souls within the holy House of God. Better that you strip yourself and remove all worldly interests now while you have the time to make amends to your God, for many mitres will fall into hell." - St. Thomas Aquinas, August 21, 1972
