Cardinal Zen Supports Act of Reparation after LGBT Jubilee Event at St. Peter’s Basilica...
NOT JUDGING
"When a priest tells you that you do not
have to speak up, out against homosexuality, because you are judging another
person, and you should love your neighbor and therefore never set him up to be
judged, you are not judging. If a person is doing wrong, and you tell him in a
kind manner, a charitable manner, that they are committing a sin, and that they
will lose their soul and go to purgatory, or even hell, that is not judging. You
are helping and loving your neighbor. What is love?"
- Our Lady, June 18, 1982
GOOD FATHERS
"Homosexuality shall never be accepted.
In the writings of the good Fathers, My child and My children, you were made
fully aware in the Old and the New Testament of the Book of life and love, the
Bible—you had been made full aware of the dastardly acts of mankind, as men
consort with men. This shall not be accepted nor condoned by the Eternal Father
even if He has to send another plague upon you."
- Jesus, August 21, 1985

Cardinal Joseph Zen, bishop emeritus of Hong Kong, has spoken out in support of four bishops who called for Catholics to pray in reparation after pro-LGBT activists entered St. Peter’s Basilica with rainbow-colored flags and offensive slogans.
Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Kazakhstan, Bishop Robert Mutsaerts of the Netherlands, Bishop Marian Eleganti of Switzerland, and U.S.-based Bishop Joseph Strickland prayed the public act of reparation Oct. 4 at the Catholic Identity Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, according to The Catholic Herald. Acts of reparation are prayers made in amends for sins committed by oneself or others.
In an Oct. 8 X post, Cardinal Zen said he recently saw that an LGBT organization had organized a Sept. 6 event for the Jubilee Year at the basilica. Several actions that transpired during the event were offensive to God, he said, according to the Grok-generated English translation of his post.
“They boldly held up props in rainbow colors, wore clothing with slogan phrases, and same-sex couples enthusiastically held hands, completely turning it into a demonstration,” he said, according to the translation. “This was not at all a pilgrimage for the Jubilee Year (reaffirming the vows of baptism, repenting for sins, and committing to reform). That action gravely insulted the Catholic faith and the dignity of St. Peter’s Basilica, which is a serious offense against God!”
According to Vatican-based journalist Diane Montagna, one man who entered the basilica during the pilgrimage was photographed holding hands with another man and wore a backpack that said “F*** the Rules.” Montagna also reported that a Belgian priest wore an “intersex-inclusive” pride flag as a cape, and another man carried “a large rainbow flag” for the event.
Montagna reported that ahead of the event, she asked the Vatican Dicastery for Evangelization about the Vatican’s policy “regarding carrying rainbow/LGBTQ+ flags, banners, T-shirts and other means of messaging,” and a spokesperson responded that no flags, banners, or the like would be allowed. Montagna also asked Jubilee volunteers at the event about such rules, and said “they all told me the same thing: that they didn’t know & weren’t told anything in this regard.”
“So there may have been rules, but in the end they weren’t enforced,” Montagna wrote Sept. 7.
In his X post, Cardinal Zen remarked that it is difficult to understand how the Vatican knew about the event in advance and did not issue a statement of condemnation after. He then emphasized the importance of loving and respecting those who experience same-sex attraction.
Cardinal Zen said in a follow-up Oct. 8 X post that he supports the four bishops’ call to make an act of reparation and to seek out the Lord’s forgiveness for what took place.
He encouraged the faithful in China to gather for three days to pray an act of reparation he included in the X post, and to “perform an act of self-denial or a charitable deed, offering reparation before God for our brothers and sisters who have sinned.”
— Joseph Zen (@CardJosephZen) October 8, 2025The Catholic Identity Conference also posted an “Act of Reparation for the Desecration of the Jubilee Year and St Peter’s Basilica by ‘LGBTQ+’ Activists.”
The prayer of reparation led by the bishops has also been met with some criticism, from a German auxiliary bishop.
According to an Oct. 13 report from The Catholic Herald, Auxiliary Bishop Ludger Schepers of Essen commented to the German bishops’ agency KNA that the prayer of reparation was “a scandalous sign of ecclesiastical narrow-mindedness and an open rejection of all those who long for a Church that truly lives the Gospel.”
One of the lines in the conference’s prayer of reparation is “for those who abused the Jubilee Year, the Church of the Gesù, the Holy Door and St. Peter’s Basilica, by turning them into a platform for advocating the legitimization of sodomy, fornication and other sins against the Sixth Commandment.”
The Catholic Herald reports that Bishop Schepers did not see what took place at the pilgrimage this way, saying that it was “not a protest, not a provocation, but a celebration of faith” that witnessed to “the vibrant diversity of people in the Church” who pray and have faith together.
In the other Oct. 8 X post, Cardinal Zen emphasized how crucial truth and charity are in walking with those who experience same-sex attraction.
“Of course, we respect and care for people with same-sex orientation; they are our brothers and sisters,” he said. “They face an additional challenge in interpersonal relationships. If they are not Catholics, we can avoid arguments and misunderstandings and befriend them. But if they are Catholics, we should assume they, like us, understand from Scripture and Tradition that same-sex behavior does not align with God’s plan for humanity.”
“If they struggle to understand this truth, we should lovingly help them understand and make every effort to maintain a friendly relationship, but we cannot tell them that lifestyle is without issue,” he added. “We are not God. God asks us to pass on to them what Jesus taught us, which is the true way to love them, helping them through prayer and the sacraments to receive the grace to resist temptation, live a virtuous life, and walk the path to heaven.”

"The judgment of your God is not akin to the judgment of man. The Eternal Father will only judge by the heart. Your rank, your accumulation of worldly goods does not set you up before another. Many have sold their souls within the holy House of God. Better that you strip yourself and remove all worldly interests now while you have the time to make amends to your God, for many mitres will fall into hell." - St. Thomas Aquinas, August 21, 1972
