We have written at length about how French President Emmanuel Macron, being hopelessly unable to fix his decaying country and its fraying social fabric, is always overeager to meddle in every possible geopolitical situation.

Now, according to the conservative Italian press, the preparations for the conclave to be held starting May 7, Macron is weaving shady intrigues that ‘are parasitizing the process of designating the future pope’.

Le Monde reported (translated from the French):

“Since the death of Francis on April 21, newspapers close to Giorgia Meloni’s government have been speculating on the designs of Emmanuel Macron, accused of implementing a strategy aimed at pushing his candidates to the throne of St. Peter.”

The Italian papers do not mince words: La Veritá: ‘Macron even wants to choose the pope’,” Libero: ‘Macron even intrudes into the conclave’. Il Tempo criticized his ‘interventionism worthy of a modern Sun King’.

“In the background of these catchy headlines are the deep mistrust of the Italian right vis-à-vis France’s intentions, Mr. Macron’s privileged relations with the Catholic movement Sant’Egidio, which was close to the late pope, and the interweaving of this influential community in the tug-of-war that plagues the Italian Church, accentuated by the period of transition underway in the Vatican.”

But elsewhere in social media and in the press, we find the apparent real reason for Macron’s meddling:

Cardinal Robert Sarah from West Africa’s Guinea is a potential successor to Pope Francis. A dangerous one for Globalism.

Sarah advocates for the West to hold on to its identity and principles, describes mass migration as ‘self-destruction’ for Europe, a ‘new form of slavery’.

Spectator reported:

“In 2021, during an interview on French radio, he made one of his most quoted comments: ‘If Europe continues in this way, it will be invaded by a foreign population.’ In today’s France, those words land like a grenade. The unease at the Élysée is palpable.

Sarah is a long shot. At 79 years old, he loses his conclave voting rights in June, and his combative stance has made him a divisive figure in Rome. But among conservative Catholics, particularly in France, he’s become a hero. His uncompromising defense of tradition, his attacks on secularism, and his denunciation of what he calls the West’s moral collapse have turned him into a cultural force. He is lionized on traditionalist platforms, quoted approvingly by right-wing politicians, and treated by some as the spiritual antidote to everything Pope Francis came to represent.”

Sarah’s message resonates with French voters betrayed by Macron’s globalism and endless moralizing.

When Sarah calls for young Africans to ‘stay and build’ rather than migrate is a threat to everything Macron stands for – and this is even more dangerous coming from a black African cardinal.

“Standing opposite Sarah in both tone and theology is Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, the Archbishop of Marseille and France’s leading ecclesiastical progressive. Aveline has built his career around interfaith dialogue, migrant outreach, and the kind of pastoral language that glides smoothly through Davos panels and Vatican press releases. When Pope Francis visited Marseille in 2023, Cardinal Aveline hosted him, turning the trip into a public celebration of diversity and the Church’s commitment to migrants. Aveline has been described as the ‘French Francis’.”
