Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey filed a lawsuit against the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, accusing the abortion organization of misleading women about the safety of mifepristone, a drug used in chemical abortions.

The suit, announced Wednesday, seeks millions in damages and aims to hold the national abortion provider accountable for what Bailey calls deceptive practices that endanger women’s health.

“Planned Parenthood has a documented history of subverting state law, including failure to file complication reports,” Bailey said in a statement. The lawsuit, filed in response to what Bailey describes as Planned Parenthood’s pattern of violating Missouri regulations, alleges the pro-abortion organization downplays the risks of mifepristone, claiming it is safer than common medications like Tylenol.

The complaint follows Bailey’s ongoing efforts to enforce Missouri’s health and safety standards for abortion providers. The state requires facilities performing chemical abortions to have an approved complication plan to address emergencies, as the FDA notes that up to 4.6% of women who take mifepristone require emergency medical care.

“Missouri law is clear: any facility performing chemical abortions must have an approved complication plan in place to protect women’s health and safety,” Bailey said. “With up to 5% of women who undergo chemical abortions ending up in the emergency room, Planned Parenthood’s refusal to follow basic safety standards puts women at risk.”

The lawsuit cites Planned Parenthood’s history of noncompliance, including a 2018 incident where state inspectors shut down a Columbia facility after discovering staff knowingly used mold-contaminated equipment on women for months.

Bailey also pointed to sworn testimony from Planned Parenthood physicians who admitted to failing to file required complication reports for 15 years, despite knowing it was mandated by law.

“The law is clear. The evidence is overwhelming. And Missouri will enforce every word of it,” Bailey said.

Pro-life advocates have long raised concerns about the safety of mifepristone, citing cases of severe complications.

A 2023 incident reported a woman’s death from sepsis following an abortion at a Planned Parenthood facility, highlighting the risks of chemical abortions when proper oversight is lacking. Studies suggest the drug’s complication rates may be significantly higher than reported, with some estimates indicating it is 22 times more dangerous than FDA data suggests.

Bailey’s legal action is part of a broader campaign to protect women and unborn children in Missouri. In March, he issued a cease-and-desist order against Planned Parenthood facilities, prohibiting them from performing chemical abortions without approved complication plans.

“Planned Parenthood has demonstrated a disturbing pattern of performing abortions without the necessary complication plans, failing to report complications, and willfully violating state law,” Bailey said. “It is my duty to enforce the law and protect the lives and safety of Missourians.”

The lawsuit comes amid heightened scrutiny of Planned Parenthood’s practices in Missouri, including allegations of trafficking minors across state lines for abortions without parental consent. Bailey’s office is seeking injunctive relief to prevent further violations and ensure transparency from the organization. “There is no more important fight than to ensure Missouri is the safest state in the nation for children and families,” Bailey said.

The case is expected to draw national attention as it challenges the abortion industry’s narrative on the safety of chemical abortions, with implications for pro-life policies across the country. Bailey’s office remains committed to upholding Missouri’s laws, vowing to continue its fight against what it calls Planned Parenthood’s “relentless assault” on women’s safety and parental rights.
