The salvation of countless souls and peace in the world depend on mankind properly responding to the Lord’s command — made through the apparitions at Fatima and elsewhere — to spread devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary throughout the world.

This was the urgent appeal given by Father Stefano Manelli, 92, co-founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate (FFI), at a London symposium earlier this month.

In an impassioned talk entitled “Fatima and the Immaculate Heart of Mary,” Father Manelli said that if the warnings at Fatima, Portugal, more than a century ago were heeded, Our Lady would intervene in a “completely inscrutable way” to “prevent the ruin of materialistic humanity, gone mad behind the false idols of Satan's kingdom.”

Minds and hearts, he said, have been plagued by the “culture of death” and widespread atheism and corruption, but countering these false idols “depends solely on our response.” Our Lady, he added, “will not work alone, without our voluntary participation as free and intelligent people, who commit themselves to correspond to her maternal invitations.”

This is why at the apparitions at La Salette and Lourdes, he stressed, Our Lady asked for penance, three times saying to St. Bernadette of Lourdes: “Penance, penance, penance!” — a plea confirmed at Fatima.

“But who thinks in this manner today, with so many nations, large and small alike, declaring their deadly array of weapons and atomic bombs at their disposal?” he asked.

Citing the Mariologist Father René Laurentin — who explained that the call to penance means conversion and “to return to God” — he lamented that today’s world has become totally secularized: people see many things, but can no longer see God.

Father Manelli wondered what would happen if the world continued along this path of “error against the truth, heresies against the faith, of corruption against morals” that have led the values of family, marriage, education, women and youth “into ruin.” He also observed the “painful losses” in the Church, such as a “frightening decline in vocations” and abandonment of frequent reception of the sacraments.

The current situation “cannot but be tremendously critical for us,” he cautioned, adding that the third part of the Secret of Fatima — a dire warning about worldwide suffering, persecution of Christians, destruction of nations, and a call for repentance to avoid catastrophic spiritual and physical consequences — “seems to be coming true today more than ever.”

He warned of a moment when even Our Lady’s intercession might no longer hold back divine justice, and asked how “the people of this poor world in danger” could be awakened “so that they finally realize the terrifying [his emphasis] gravity of the situation of our days?”

Other writers, he said, have spoken of man “sitting on the crater of a volcano” yet “foolishly” not wanting to realize the grave dangers, preferring instead to distract himself with other activities.

“He takes interest in football matches, he wastes hours and hours in front of the television, he makes plans for his holidays and watches with fascination the unreal cars racing on the circuits,” Father Manelli said, quoting from the 2000 book Le Profezie di Fatima (The Prophecies of Fatima) by Luciano Lincetto. “Women follow fashion and vain vanities, while young people are easy prey to drugs, pornography and violence. Few think about God and the great ‘whys’ of human destiny. Few return to God and think about the brevity of life.”

Father Manelli again underlined the importance of proposing “the grace of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which is the way to salvation, rooted in conversion, communion with God in prayer (in particular the meditated Rosary) and above all in devotion/consecration to the Immaculate Heart.”

Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary “assimilates us to her, it ‘Marianizes’ us,” he said. He also stressed the importance of recognizing the truth of Mary as Co-Redemptrix, a teaching that he said was fully supported by Sister Lúcia dos Santos, the eldest of the three Portuguese shepherd children at Fatima.

Follow the Blessed Mother’s “school of life and love,” he implored, and learn “to follow Christ, to bind ourselves to Christ, to be Christ’s, through loving obedience,” fulfilling “Mary’s commandment” of doing “whatever he tells you.”

Ultimately, the triumph of the Immaculate Heart is assured, Father Manelli concluded, but he stressed it requires mankind’s faithful participation through consecration, sacrifice and prayer — especially the Rosary.

Aug. 22 is the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in the traditional Roman rite and the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary on the General Roman Calendar. Pope Leo has invited the faithful to celebrate the feast day by praying and fasting for peace.

Father Manelli’s Devout Life

Born in Fiume, Italy (now Rijeka, Croatia) in 1933 to devout parents, Settimio Manelli and Licia Gualandris — whose causes for beatification have been opened — Father Manelli received his first Holy Communion from Padre Pio in 1938.

He entered the Franciscan Order at the age of 12, and was ordained in 1955. Deeply inspired by the Franciscan tradition, especially St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Francis of Assisi, Father Manelli co-founded the FFIs in 1970 with Father Gabriel Maria Pellettieri.

He has been instrumental to the growth and worldwide missionary work of the Order, which is known for promoting the Marian spirit within Franciscan life and supporting a return to traditional forms of Catholic worship.

Between 2013 and 2016, various figures and media within the Church tried to sully Father Manelli’s good name, leading him to face scrutiny and forcing him to resign as head of the Order in 2013. However, investigations led to the allegations being dropped and his dignity restored.

Sources within the FFI stressed to the Register Aug. 19 that Father Manelli is in “perfect standing with the Church” and that since his enforced removal, he has led a life of prayer and writing.
