A campaign to encourage people to order abortion pills by mail even before they are pregnant is about to hit Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, putting more women and unborn children at risk of serious harm and even death. 

Shout Your Abortion, Hydra Mutual Aid Fund, and Plan C are launching the public service announcement (PSA) campaign aiming to raise awareness of the abortion drugs, according to an emailed Oct. 21 press release from Shout Your Abortion. The initiative is set to release two “cinematic PSAs” about a single mother and a teenager facing unexpected pregnancies. The videos will direct viewers to a website with information on how to legally obtain chemical abortion pills before pregnancy. 

The release notes that there are no brick-and-mortar abortion facilities in the Upper Peninsula and only one urgent care site in Marquette offers chemical abortion pills. The release emphasizes that abortion pills can be legally ordered online “and mailed directly to an abortion-seeker’s home,” or “ordered in advance and kept on hand.”

According to the release the campaign is also running a pro-abortion billboard on the US Highway 41 outside Marquette from Oct. 13-Nov. 9 and will mail more than 10,000 postcards to homes in Marquette and Houghton/Hancock. 

The dangers of mifepristone, the first drug in the two-pill chemical abortion regimen, have long been warned by pro-life activists and medical professionals The Charlotte Lozier Institute published a study in August that found a steep increase in emergency room (ER) visits for women who had chemical abortions compared with women who had surgical abortions and women who gave birth.  

“The researchers found that the four groups’ total number of emergency room visits went up from 51,307 to 68,798 between 2004 and 2015, and discovered that the group with the largest percentage of increased ER visits was the group who had taken abortion pills,” CatholicVote previously reported. “In the group who had taken abortion pills, ER visits went up 2649.7%, compared to 280.4% of women who had surgical abortions, 42.8% of those who had never been pregnant, and 9.2% of women who gave birth.”

CatholicVote Vice President Joshua Mercer, a resident of Michigan, denounced the pro-abortion push, emphasizing the danger the drugs pose to both women and their unborn children. 

“Four abortion facilities in Michigan closed their doors this year, including in my hometown of Petoskey. So it’s no surprise that the abortion industry has shifted its resources away from surgical abortions to chemical abortions, but this just shows how little the abortion industry cares about women.”

The abortion pills are dangerous, he said. He pointed to a recent study by the Ethics and Public Policy Center that found that 10.93% of women who were prescribed mifepristone from 2017 to 2023 suffered serious adverse effects such as sepsis, infection, or hemorrhaging within 45 days of taking the drug. 

The findings should not be surprising, according to Mercer. 

“A pill designed to kill the baby in your womb,” he said, “isn’t safe for you either.”
