President Trump announced Thursday that he will award the late Charlie Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor the president can bestow upon a private citizen.

Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while giving a speech at Utah Valley University Sept. 10.

“Before we begin, let me express the horror and grief so many Americans [feel] at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk,” Trump said in his announcement speech. “Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and an inspiration to millions and millions of people.”

The President said that his prayers were with Kirk’s family at this time.

Trump said that Kirk inspired many people, especially young people, and that his legacy will live on.

A date has yet to be announced for the ceremony.

Trump previously addressed Kirk’s death Sept. 10, which he said was “a dark moment for America,” as CatholicVote previously reported.

Trump then encouraged Americans “to commit themselves to the American values for which Charlie Kirk lived and died: the values of free speech, citizenship, the rule of law, and the patriotic devotion and love of God.”
