The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy on June 22 confirmed that the carrier group led by the Liaoning completed far-sea combat training and safely returned to its home port in Qingdao. Public reports stated that the Liaoning and the Type 075 amphibious assault ship Anhui conducted joint exercises in the Western Pacific for more than 40 days, fully demonstrating the effectiveness of the carrier strike group's coordinated amphibious assault ship operations in far-seas combat. The Japanese destroyer JS Asahi monitored the Liaoning carrier group, and is reported to have been involved with the Type 054B class frigate Luohe during these operations. Footage from the exercises showed J-15B ‘4+ generation’ air superiority fighters operating from the Liaoning, with serial numbers indicating that over 50 of the aircraft have now been produced. 

The Liaoning and its carrier group have undergone a very significant transformation since the ship entered service in 2012, with the carrier having begun its service as a training and experimentation platform, but evolved into a credible carrier force capable of sustained blue-water operations far from China’s coastline. One of the most important improvements has been the growth of the carrier air wing. Early operations involved only small numbers of J-15 fighters conducting basic takeoffs and landings. Over time, sortie rates increased substantially, more pilots became carrier-qualified, and the air wing expanded its mission set to include air defence, maritime strike, fleet protection, and increasingly complex joint exercises. The Navy now routinely conducts large-scale flight operations that would have been difficult a decade ago. 

The Liaoning has benefitted from significant improvements to its available escorts, with early deployments having been accompanied by older vessels such as Type 052C class air defence destroyers. Today, carrier groups frequently include modern escorts such as Type 055 and Type 052D class destroyers, the former which is widely considered the most capable destroyer class in the world. These ships provide far stronger air defence, anti-submarine warfare, and command-and-control capabilities, creating a much more capable protective screen around the carrier. The Navy’s blue water logistics capabilities have also improved markedly, with Type 901 fast combat support ships now used effectively to support sustained carrier operations by providing fuel, ammunition, spare parts, and maintenance support across great distances. Another major improvement has been operational tempo, with the Liaoning now frequently conducting long-duration cruises and spending much more time operating beyond the First Island Chain

The People's Liberation Army announced that on May 19 that the Liaoning had been dispatched conduct training exercises in the Western Pacific, and would include long-range tactical flights, live-fire drills, support and cover operations, and comprehensive rescue operations. With the Navy’s first supercarrier the Fujian still not fully operational, while the Liaoning’s sister ship the Shandong is undergoing refurbishment and modernisation, the Liaoning has been the Navy’s only aircraft carrier able to accommodate fixed wing aircraft that was deployable over the past month. The warship has been deployed for intense exercises, including multiple major shows of force, over the past six months. The warship’s air wing on December 7 began training flights in the Pacific Ocean, after it and its carrier group passed through waters off Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, during which new J-15B fighters demonstrated their considerable superiority over Japanese F-15 fighters during two separate engagements. These incidents caused very considerable concerns in Japan’s military leadership.
