Courage Director: Synod Report ‘Wounds the Church’...

"I will not stand for My priests who condone homosexuality and allow it in My priesthood!...I will not stand by and allow My priesthood to be destroyed!" - Jesus, June 18, 1982

"In no way will homosexuality be accepted, for it means damnation and destruction." - Jesus, July 1, 1985

DOCTRINES  OF  DEMONS
"Theologians in My Son's churches and seminaries have implemented doctrines of demons in My Son's House--Church. Theologians have set many onto the path to hell."

NCRegister.com reported on May 11, 2026:

By Edward Pentin

he final report of the Synod on Synodality’s Study Group 9 has drawn widespread criticism since its publication last week — not least for what its authors wrote about Courage International.

A respected and canonically approved Catholic apostolate, since 1980 Courage International has been providing spiritual support to men and women experiencing same-sex attractions who wish to live chastely according to Church teaching.

In its critique of Courage, the report failed to include perspectives from anyone involved with the apostolate and erroneously claimed that its work involved so-called “reparative therapy.”

“Since no Courage representative was involved in the process, the study group became problematic and seems to contradict what synodality intends: the greater engagement of all relevant voices,” said Father Brian Gannon, Courage International’s executive director, in an interview with the Register. “It is thus intellectually dishonest.”

Father Gannon gave these comments for the piece I wrote on the study group’s report for the Register last week. As only a few excerpts of the interview could be used in the article due to space constraints, his full remarks are published here:

Father Gannon, what is your overall assessment of the report’s view of homosexuality

There are issues that make the report incomplete, erroneous and thus wounding to many Catholics with same-sex attraction who are being so faithful to Church teaching on chastity and marriage.

First, Courage International, to be exact canonically, is a universal, clerical, public association of the faithful. In effect, Courage is an international organization with several thousand members and even an episcopal board of Catholic bishops in full support. Despite this, stunningly, Courage itself was not represented in the Study Group 9! This presents a problem; source material is deficient and incomplete.

Secondly, two witnesses who object to Church moral teaching and embrace immoral relationships seem to be the sole sources.

Thirdly, Courage does not engage in reparative therapy; this is false. The focus is on chastity and the freedom it bestows through God’s grace.

Fourthly, the overall message seems to paint a same-sex relationship as a gift from God — completely in contradiction of 2,000 years of Catholic moral teaching.

To be blunt: The report is intellectually dishonest and actually wounds the Church, a self-inflicted wound by synod contributors and redactors who seem to be rejecting the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

What is your reaction to the views expressed about Courage?

Courage is an organization of helping men and women with same-sex attraction to love authentically, and flourish in that love, as Christ teaches. Since no Courage representative was involved in the process, the study group became problematic and seems to contradict what synodality intends: the greater engagement of all relevant voices. It is thus intellectually dishonest. Courage does not engage in reparative therapy; this is utterly false. Chastity, personal accompaniment and grace through the sacraments are key to Courage’s ministry.

Courage places tremendous emphasis on accompaniment and sensitivity to the struggle of same-sex-attracted persons in today’s world. There is a great deal of fatherly accompaniment; this report fails to even acknowledge, let alone elaborate on, that key element of Courage. Consequently, this misrepresentation of Courage actually wounds members of Courage and projects an erroneous image of Courage that thus causes injury to the pastoral outreach of Holy Mother Church.

What is your reaction to a passage in the report that appears to deny the sinfulness of homosexual relationships. It states: “Within this struggle, yet simultaneously as a path toward its resolution, the account bears witness to the discovery that sin, at its root, does not consist in the (same-sex) couple relationship, but in a lack of faith in a God who desires our fulfilment. This new awareness becomes the starting point for moving beyond a conception of the Christian community merely as a place of welcome and compassion, to arriving at the experience of the Christian community as a place where we are all loved.”

Relationships are the heart of human existence. God is three Persons; we are made in his image; we are made for love of him and all others. God became man in order to restore the broken relationship with the human race. He did so through the cross and Resurrection. Thus, all relationships are only fulfilled when in harmony with Christ and his Holy Bride, the Church.

God wants everyone to have flourishing relationships in marriage and family, which is why he defines the specific goals of human sexuality to help us flourish and protect us from the self-inflicted wound of sin.

The physical complementarity of man and woman visibly manifests God’s definition of unitive and procreative ends of sexuality to protect the human race. Adam and Eve’s perfect relationship immediately diminished with each other when they usurped God’s authority over good and evil.

Whenever anyone departs from the Commandments they also depart from the Sermon on the Mount. Christ gave the keys to Peter and subsequent popes to manifest his moral authority in the world. Thus, sexuality must be defined by Christ and his Bride, as it teaches from the Catechism of the Catholic Church; not from off-the-cuff remarks, but from the CCC as the compendium of 2,000 years of Catholic teaching. Intellectually honest reading of Holy Scripture clearly condemns homosexual actions, while not condemning those who have same-sex attraction but live chastely.

Likewise, Catholic teaching on all sexual morality remains the same for 2,000 years. The structure of the moral act is unchanged in Catholic teaching. As the Catechism teaches (1750-1753), the object of the act must be good in order for the moral action to be good. No matter how “good” the intention, if the object of the act (here, a sexual action) is wrong, then no intentions can remove the evil. God is the source of all love, and the defining moment of God’s love for the human race is the cross; complete obedience to the Father and a willingness to accept suffering to do so, but knowing God is with you every step with infinite love, patience and the sacrament of penance.

The above statement needs to be dispatched and a new statement adopted to more clearly and lovingly embrace the Church’s teaching on human sexuality and the call for all to holy chastity. That there are many heroic Catholic martyrs for chastity in Church history is a powerful witness, especially the patron saints of Courage: St. Charles Lwanga and his companions.

Why do you think Catholics such as these wish to oppose what Courage does when the apostolate follows the Church’s teaching?

That question merits a very in-depth answer, but in short: In the last 60 years, we have seen a global attack on the Church’s moral teaching like never before in history. The revisionist moral theologies that emerged from the 1960s sought to revolutionize Church teaching to accommodate the secular culture of the so-called sexual revolution. St. John Paul II wrote clearly and decisively in Veritatis Splendor and the Catechism about the immutable nature of the moral law as directly tied to the anthropology of man and woman as the images of God. The personal struggles of man and woman in living the Gospel indicate the subjective experiences that must be pastorally treated with charity and forbearance, but also, as with a medical doctor, the truth of the remedy must be made clear. The call of all people to chastity and reverence for marriage as only between a man and woman, as Pope Leo XIV has said several times, becomes an obstacle to the modern desire to decide what is good and evil; that, consequently, personal desire trumps Catholic Church teaching, and thus permits anyone to effectively rewrite the deposit of faith, of which no one has the authority.

How should the hierarchy effectively respond to this report? Should it be simply ignored, as it is a non-binding report, or should they speak up and publicly reject it as incoherent with Church teaching?

We do respectfully ask the hierarchy to assertively label it as it is: a non-authoritative summary of an incomplete inquiry into this very sensitive and challenging issue for so many families. That it does not acknowledge the many thousands seeking to embrace all the Church teaches. That the teaching of the Church is clear: God is infinite Love and unchanging Truth. Truth is prior to conscience and human experience; thus, the immutable moral teachings of the Church that any sexual actions outside of proper marriage are always sinful. But that Courage has had tremendous success in helping thousands to live a chaste life according to the Church. There are so many incredibly loving and faithful Courage members who inspire us Courage priests and deacon chaplains in the quest for holiness and peace.
