Democrat House candidate Sarah Trone Garriott is facing backlash after a resurfaced video showed her recounting her involvement in a satanic “wedding.”
The video shows Trone Garriott revealing that she played a key role in the “wedding” of a self-identified satanist couple.
At the time, Trone Garriott was serving as a minister-in-training.
Trone Garriott, a Lutheran minister running to unseat Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA) in a competitive Iowa district, participated in the 2006 ceremony while working as an intern pastor in West Virginia.
The video, recorded during a 2023 storytelling event, has drawn renewed scrutiny as her campaign intensifies.
Resurfaced Remarks Detail Controversial Ceremony
In the video, Trone Garriott described the wedding as her “first” and reflected on the experience as a “spiritual lesson.”
“He asked me to pick the Scriptures,” she said, referring to the senior pastor.
“Irritated, I flipped through the Bible.
“Should I pick something with Satan in it to make them feel more at home?”
“Eventually, I just put the bookmark in at 1 Corinthians 13,” she continued.
“If you have ever been to a Christian wedding, you’ve probably heard this Scripture.
“All they would get from me was [a] basic Lutheran wedding.”
She added, “When the Apostle Paul wrote these words, he certainly never had in mind a small town in West Virginia, two satanists and a Lutheran pastor in training. But Paul knew people, and people haven’t changed that much over the centuries. It is hard to love one another. We often need to be reminded how.”
Trone Garriott also acknowledged the couple’s hostility toward Christianity during her remarks.
“These people could barely stand us,” she said.
“They didn’t believe in or really have any respect for what mattered to us.”
Campaign Defends Actions as Part of Ministry
A spokesperson for Trone Garriott’s campaign defended her role in the ceremony, stating she was acting under the direction of a supervising pastor.
“As a minister in training, Sarah followed the direction of her supervising pastor and had no control over who walked through the church’s doors — it was her job to minister to everyone, including people she does not share beliefs with,” the spokesperson said.
“Like so many Iowa Christians, Sarah’s faith calls her to love thy neighbor, and she follows Jesus’ example of embodying his grace for everyone,” the spokesperson added.
A source familiar with the campaign also disputed that she formally “married” the couple, noting she was not ordained until 2008.
However, Trone Garriott’s own remarks appeared to confirm her active participation in the ceremony.
“This was going to be my first wedding,” she said.
Opponents Raise Questions About Faith and Values
The resurfaced video comes as Trone Garriott’s religious views have already been a focal point in the race.
Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA) previously criticized her positions, stating:
“She’s made it clear that the values Iowa families live by every single day are the ones she’s running against.”
Additional past remarks have also drawn attention, including comments expressing discomfort with public displays of Christianity and support for non-Christian prayer practices in government settings.
In a 2025 op-ed, Trone Garriott wrote, “Jesus engaged with pagans,” defending inclusion of non-Christian voices.
Republicans Highlight Pattern as Race Intensifies
The National Republican Congressional Committee criticized Trone Garriott’s record, arguing it raises broader concerns about her judgment.
“Her record shows a clear pattern of rhetoric and decisions that contradict her own faith, raising serious questions about her judgment and values,” NRCC spokeswoman Emily Tuttle said.
“If she’s willing to blur those lines, Iowans can’t trust her to stand up for them.”
As the race for the swing seat continues, the resurfaced video is likely to remain a point of contention, with both campaigns using it to reinforce broader arguments about values and leadership.
