On June 5, Archbishop Weisenburger made a special appearance at the opening of the $16 million Imam Al-Hasanain Mosque in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. Other notable attendees included U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib and various Islamic leaders from around the country.

Standing alone behind the podium, the archbishop praised the opening of the mosque.

“There is nowhere I feel greater honor, fraternity and kindness,” he said. “From the moment I drove onto this beautiful property today, I very fully felt the sense of the divine presence.” 

Echoing the sentiments of the “wonderful imam” who spoke earlier, Weisenburger said, “We are members of the same human family. All churches, all mosques, all synagogues, all places where God reaches out and touches with His finger are sacred. This is a truly wonderful and sacred place. A place that will bring all of humanity, I believe, into deeper communion with our one God.”

“My prayers are that you will know great, great successes here, great blessings here, and that together we will come to love our one God all the more,” he continued.

“I will be brief, because I also know we have prayer at 1:30,” he then joked, referring to the early afternoon prayers said in Islam. Finally, Weisenburger offered some parting comments before offering a blessing of the mosque. “There is no place, I think, that I feel more at home.”

In another interview at the mosque, Weisenburger said the day was one of “great, great joy for everyone in the Dearborn community.” He called the mosque “a new place of holiness” in the community “for people to encounter their God.”

The criticism from Catholics across the world has been sharp.

Fr. Calvin Robinson, a British priest living in the United States and author of The Silent Jihad, wrote on X, “Pluralism is a heresy. Repent! This man is not leading people to Christ.”

Deacon Nick Donnelly added, “Mosques aren’t new places of holiness…Our Lord Jesus Christ is the only path to holiness…Islam denies the divinity of Our Lord, the Most Holy Trinity, and His redemptive sacrifice on the Cross…This is apostasy.”

Catholic podcaster Dave Reilly wrote, “While the SSPX is about to get excommunicated for *being Catholic,* we’ve got bishops of the Church calling Mosques and Synagogues ‘holy places.’ Incredible.”

John Yep, president of Catholics for Catholics, issued the following statement:

“The archbishop’s comments are nothing short of pluralistic heresy steeped in the language of freemasonry.”

“Catholics must beware of false leaders like Weisenburger and take the time to understand the true teachings of the Catholic Church.”

“While thousands of Christians around the world continue to be martyred by the followers of Islam, our own shepherd stands at the gate allowing the wolves to get in with this false ecumenism.”

“Our Lady of Fatima warned that many souls are falling into hell. More than ever we need our bishops to hold true to the teachings of the Faith. Let us pray for Bishop Weisenburger but also not remain passive allowing this scandal to go on.”
