The case of Charles Lieber — the former Harvard chemistry chair convicted in 2021 for lying about his undisclosed participation in China’s Thousand Talents Program — now heading a state-backed Shenzhen institute focused on brain-computer interfaces lends disturbing weight to that broader warning, even if Lieber’s move mostly stems from his pre-existing ties to Beijing and post-conviction professional realities in the U.S.

Lieber, the former chair of Harvard University’s Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and once the world’s top-ranked chemist in nanoscience, was arrested by federal agents in January 2020 and convicted by a jury in December 2021 of lying to authorities about his undisclosed participation in China’s Thousand Talents Program and related tax violations involving payments from Wuhan University of Technology. After retiring from Harvard in 2023 and serving a light sentence of time already served plus six months of home confinement, the 66-year-old scientist relocated to Shenzhen, China, on April 28, 2025. He has now resurfaced as the founding director of the state-funded i-BRAIN Institute (Institute for Brain Research, Advanced Interfaces and Neurotechnologies) at the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation and Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, where he is leading work on brain-computer interfaces that blur the distinction between electronics and the human brain.

SHENZHEN, April 30 (Reuters) – An American scientist convicted of lying to U.S. authorities about payments from China while he was at Harvard University has rebuilt his research lab in Shenzhen to pursue technology the Chinese government has identified as a national priority: embedding electronics into the human brain.

Charles Lieber, 67, is among the world’s leading researchers in brain-computer interfaces. The technology has shown promise in treating conditions such as ALS and restoring movement in paralyzed patients. But it also has potential military applications: Scientists at China’s People’s Liberation Army have investigated brain interfaces as a way to engineer super soldiers by boosting mental agility and ​situational awareness, according to the U.S. Defense Department.

National security analyst J. Michael Waller, Senior Analyst for Strategy at the Center for Security Policy and a longtime expert on Chinese influence operations and political warfare, issued a particularly caustic warning about the national security implications. In response to the news of Lieber’s relocation, Waller posted on X: “Former head of Harvard chemistry department defects to China, tied to helping CCP build AI supersoldiers.”

Darren Beattie’s warnings are proving prescient. Revolver News will continue to keep a close eye on this disturbing development and Beijing’s aggressive campaign to poach America’s top scientific talent. To reverse this brain drain and preserve U.S. technological and military superiority, the nation must continue to urgently dismantle the corrosive DEI regime, end the stifling pervasive bias against accomplished white men in higher education, and refocus instead on identifying, attracting, retaining, and properly rewarding our highest-achieving talent based on merit and excellence rather than identity politics.
