The Pentagon has reportedly spent months quietly positioning major military assets around Cuba, fueling growing speculation that President Donald Trump’s administration is preparing contingency plans for possible military action against the communist island nation.
According to a report from Politico, U.S. military planners have expanded naval deployments, surveillance operations, and force positioning throughout the Caribbean as tensions between Washington and Havana continue escalating.
The military buildup comes after President Trump signed an executive order earlier this year labeling Cuba an “extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security amid mounting concerns over the regime’s growing ties to America’s foreign adversaries.
Trump Administration Warns Cuba Becoming National Security Threat
The White House has accused Cuba’s communist government of deepening cooperation with hostile regimes and terrorist-linked actors, including Russia, China, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
Administration officials have also raised alarm over alleged foreign intelligence activity targeting the United States from just 90 miles off the Florida coast.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio intensified those warnings during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.
“Having a failed state 90 miles from our shores is a threat to the national security of the United States,” Rubio said.
Rubio also warned that Cuba is “in a lot of trouble,” signaling that the administration’s posture toward Havana may be entering a far more aggressive phase.
Pentagon Expands Naval and Surveillance Operations
According to the report, the Pentagon buildup has included the deployment of the USS Nimitz carrier strike group into the Caribbean alongside guided missile destroyers and cruisers capable of launching precision strikes against land-based targets.
Surveillance drones and reconnaissance aircraft have reportedly been operating near Cuba for months while amphibious assault ships carrying thousands of Marines remain positioned for possible rapid deployment.
Military analysts say the positioning provides the United States with multiple operational options should Trump decide to move beyond sanctions and economic pressure.
“The Nimitz is likely there primarily for intimidation, though it could be used in a military operation if needed,” former Pentagon official Mark Cancian told Politico.
“Air strikes are possible to take out their air defenses to allow broader air operations or, perhaps, destroy their leadership with the idea of establishing a relationship as we have with Venezuela,” Cancian added.
“Raul Castro would be their first target.”
Reports Suggest ‘Maduro-Style’ Scenarios Discussed
Behind the scenes, reports indicate Pentagon officials have discussed contingency scenarios resembling operations previously used to pressure the Venezuelan regime.
The administration has steadily intensified pressure on Havana over recent months while simultaneously increasing military positioning throughout the region.
Democrats in Washington have begun voicing concern that the administration could potentially move toward military action without congressional authorization.
Earlier this year, lawmakers introduced legislation aimed at restricting Trump from using force against Cuba unless Congress formally approved military action.
The concerns reflect growing anxiety among critics that the administration may be preparing options extending far beyond traditional sanctions and diplomatic pressure.
Cuban Regime Warns It Is Prepared to Defend Itself
The communist Cuban government has responded by ramping up military readiness across the island.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel recently warned that while Havana prefers peace, the regime is fully prepared to defend itself against any foreign attack.
The rapidly escalating standoff has prompted comparisons to some of the Cold War’s most dangerous moments, including the failed Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The proximity of Cuba to the U.S. mainland, combined with increasing concerns over foreign adversaries operating in the region, has elevated the confrontation into a major geopolitical flashpoint.
Extended Deployments Raise Concerns Inside Pentagon
At the same time, reports indicate defense officials are becoming increasingly concerned about the strain prolonged deployments are placing on American military forces.
Several Navy vessels operating in the region have reportedly remained deployed well beyond standard rotation timelines, creating growing concerns over maintenance, readiness, crew fatigue, and retention.
“These back-to-back long deployments will add up over time,” one defense official told Politico.
“Keeping them out there so long creates more problems in the long run when it comes to refitting and repairing those ships once they come home.”
Military ‘Building Blocks’ Now in Place
While the administration has not publicly announced any plans for military intervention, the Pentagon appears to be steadily assembling the infrastructure necessary for rapid escalation if tensions continue deteriorating.
The combination of carrier strike groups, amphibious forces, surveillance operations, and expanded regional military coordination suggests the administration is ensuring that key operational “building blocks” are already in place should President Trump decide a broader confrontation with Cuba has become necessary.
As tensions continue rising between Washington and Havana, the growing military presence near the island is likely to intensify fears that the decades-long standoff between the United States and Cuba could be entering a dangerous new phase.

Many have sold their souls within the holy House of God. Better that you strip yourself and remove all worldly interests now while you have the time to make amends to your God, for many mitres will fall into hell." - St. Thomas Aquinas, August 21, 1972
