A recently published document from the German bishops encouraging Catholic school pupils to self-identify according to their “sexual identity” is the latest significant departure of the bishops’ conference from the Church’s teaching, re-igniting talk of a possible new, German-born schism.

The “orientation aid,” published on Oct. 30, states that Catholic schools should consider “diversity of sexual identities is a fact,” effectively normalizing any pupil to self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and non‑binary.

Teachers are further encouraged to use language that reflects “the diversity of sexual identities,” and are advised to present questions of sexual morality as “disputed,” allowing students to form their own judgments.

Only three German bishops have so far publicly voiced their opposition to the document: Bishops Stefan Oster of Passau and Rudolf Voderholzer of Regensburg, and Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki, Archbishop of Cologne.

The Vatican has, at least in its teaching documents, been clear about its opposition to this “gender theory” approach, describing it as an ideology that denies the created difference of man and woman, and that undermines the anthropological basis of the family.

German Catholic sociologist Gabriele Kuby, a respected expert on the scourge of gender theory, believes this latest act of German episcopal dissent from the Magisterium is, to a large extent, a consequence of Vatican inaction against the German bishops.

In the following excerpt of an interview published in the latest edition of The Academy Review of the John Paul II Academy for Human Life and the Family (JAHLF), Kuby explains in illuminating detail the extent of the crisis related to the German episcopate which, aided by their 2019-2023 Synodal Path, has attempted to impose a change in the Church’s teaching on sexual morality, introduce liturgical blessings for same-sex couples, and is now trying to normalise sexual diversity identities.

Having explained elsewhere in the interview the problems associated with the Church tax and the consequences of the sexual revolution, Kuby details in this excerpt some of the other origins of the crisis, stresses that it is children who suffer most from such policies, and contends that fathers, above all, must rise up to put protect their children and end it. “The great apostasy is happening all around us,” says Kuby, but she also sees signs of hope, observing that “a new, powerful discipleship is rising.”

The interview is conducted by Dr. Thomas Ward, a retired physician and president of the JAHLF, of which he was one of the founders.

WARD: Can you speak a little more about the [German] bishops, because the bishops’ job is to pass on the truth of Jesus Christ in union with the Pope. But here we have them, instead of passing on the Gospel and the Truth, passing on Neopaganism in action points.

KUBY: This is what the bishops promise when they are ordained:

“I want to be faithful to the Gospel. I will protect the Faith I will build up the Church, which is the Body of Christ. I will follow Peter. I will be like a good father to the people and lead them on the way to salvation. I will be a good shepherd for those who have gone astray. I will constantly pray for the salvation of my people.”

Sadly, they do not keep what they promised. They do not stick to the Deposit of the Faith. They do not build up the Church — they actually pull it down. They do not follow the Pope. They are not good fathers to all the parents who want to protect their children.

Now the Catholic schools are forced to adopt the LGBTQ agenda and gender ideology. We have been quiet for far too long. Fathers must rise up. Their first obligation is to protect their children. They have to show that they are willing to fight, that there will be no silence and no compromise. It should be noted that the Government is not pushing through the sexual agenda in predominantly Islamic schools because they know they would really get into trouble with the Muslims, who do not hesitate to use violence when things go against their beliefs.

Does this not suggest another question: If the Muslims believe in this aspect of ethics, what do bishops believe? Have they lost the Faith?

It is their predicament that they are imprisoned in their bureaucracy and the media. In order to be faithful to Jesus, they must be willing to take up their cross and follow Jesus Christ, no matter what. Christ did say that the servant is not better than the master. “If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you” (John 15:20). When we look back on history, the bishops who resist evil are the people we venerate, just as they were under the Nazis. We won’t even remember the rest. One of the bishops who has taken up his cross is Cardinal Woelki in Cologne. He is constantly attacked from within the Church and from the media. He really walks the Way of the Cross.

I think people outside of Germany should really know what the “Action Texts” of the Synodal Path are about, because the German bishops seem to insist that the Universal Church should follow their lead. To me, this is terribly worrying, because the German Church is enormously rich and there are people in the Vatican who will be only too happy to follow the German example. Could you give an account of what the following Action Texts propose?

• Reassessing homosexuality

• Living love in sexuality and partnership

• Blessing ceremonies for couples (foundational text)

• Dealing with gender diversity

These Action Texts are exactly what they are trying to impose through their Synodal Path. Pope Francis wrote several letters to the German bishops, but only put his foot down concerning the deconstruction of the authority of the bishops through sharing their power with the laity, as this would destroy the sacramentality of the Church. But he never said a single word against the deconstruction of sexual morality. I hope Pope Leo XIV will take up the battle and do something about that.

So, what is on the table? The Synodal Path agrees with the claim that homosexuality is inborn, which is scientifically unsound. Nobody is born a homosexual. It agrees with the belief that one can live in any kind of partnership which could be declared as “love” and that any kind of general genital sexuality must be respected if it agrees with the dignity of the human person. They agree to prohibit so-called “conversion therapy” by law, which has already happened in several countries, including Britain. All therapy must be affirmative. So if some young person says that they have a homosexual or transsexual inclination, the therapist has to say, “Good, live it out.” I think doctors know — and should know — that the sexual orientation of young people can be confused during puberty and will normalise, usually within two years. The new craze of transgenderism is pushed by the LGBTQ-NGOs, it is pushed — and financed — by the State, it is pushed by the media, it is now even pushed by the Church. I think it will go down in history as a huge historic crime that doctors mutilate the perfectly healthy bodies of young people in order to do the impossible: to change their sex.

Concerning the blessing of homosexual couples: there was much excitement about Pope Francis’ paper Fiducia Supplicans just before Christmas 2023. It tried to make distinctions between different kinds of blessings. We had a big upheaval of the bishops in Africa and elsewhere, who simply said “no.” But the Synodal Path in Germany says “yes” to blessings of homosexual couples, it says that no person can be denied the sacraments — including ordination — if they are homosexual and even a transsexual may be ordained a priest. So just imagine: a woman who pretends to be a man could be ordained a priest. They also claim that homosexuality is not a risk factor for sexual abuse. The fact is that 80% of sexual abuse within the clergy is carried out on boys, preferably just at the onset of puberty. The Synodal Path puts forward the amazing argument that the structure of Catholic teaching on sexuality is a cause of sexual abuse, therefore, we will have no sexual abuse if we change the Catholic teaching on sexuality. The truth is, if we kept to the Church’s teaching on sexuality and have sex only in a marriage between a man and a woman, we would have no problem with homosexuality nor with sexual abuse.

You have been speaking about Pope Francis. He seemed to support the very things that you’re describing. One of the reasons why we must know in detail about the German Synodal Path is that it might be introduced in other countries.

My problem with Pope Francis is that he was ambivalent. He didn’t support the Synodal Path, but he didn’t intervene with the LGBTQ-agenda of the German bishops. Similar things happened in the Catholic Church in Spain and many other countries, including the USA. The revolution has happened everywhere. I hope and pray that Pope Leo XIV will take up the battle.

But you say that there is one place that is not giving in, and that is Islam. This is very worrying for our future in Europe. They are resistant to this evil and because of this, they will gain strength.

Yes, but whilst we don’t want to adopt the attitude that Islam has to sexuality, we Christians will be the ones who will protect the homosexuals from the violence of Islam.

You contrast the compassion for homosexuals and transvestites with the apparent lack of compassion for the children and parents who are suffering from the attack on natural law. The bishops’ compassion seems to me to be very selective. Is it that the sins against natural law don’t matter to them anymore, or is it simply that they are cowards?

Cowardice is a ubiquitous vice. The ticket on which the whole sexual/homosexual movement travelled was that LGBTQ people are discriminated against, that they have no human rights, that they are the victims. But who are the true victims of the sexual revolution? In many cases, homosexuals are even privileged. They are in the highest ranks of society, and nobody dares to say anything against them because it might cost you your existence, your job, your everything as soon as you open your mouth against it.

But the true victims of the sexual revolution are the children. In my book The Abandoned Generation (2020), I have described the reasons why depression, suicide and addiction are rising and why the general emotional state of the younger generation is depression and fear, severely aggravated through the lockdown policies during Covid. Usually, when you are young, you want to change the world. This optimism which characterises youth is gone. One of the main factors is the breakup of the family and the fact that many children grow up without a father or even without a mother because they are put into daycare before they are even out of nappies. So they are the true victims. They and their parents should be protected by the Church. Now you can’t even send your child to kindergarten without fearing that an older child will sexually attack your younger child.

And now we have the transgender movement. Doctors, therapists, teachers and State youth organisations say that gender confusion must be affirmed, that we have to use chosen pronouns and so on. As I already said, this is a historic assault upon the younger generation. What is not in focus is the extreme suffering of the parents and the whole family if one of their members suddenly says, “You must call me by another name and use other pronouns,” “You must support me if I get rid of my genital organs,” etc. It can drive parents mad because they get no support. The youth authorities can even take the child away if parents do not affirm the transition of their child (see a case in Switzerland). It is precisely in these cases that the Church should intervene, but the opposite is true.

You mentioned persecution. I’ve been thinking of parishes and how uncomfortable life might become in parishes for families who are authentically Catholic.

Yes indeed. For families, but especially for priests. Priests are now in a terrible dilemma — will they be faithful to Jesus or to the bishop? They lie flat on the floor, they kiss the bishop’s ring, and they promise obedience and now they have a bishop who prohibits them from speaking of sexual morality and if they do, they might lose their office. If priests cannot speak the truth, their flock is not educated, and it is just given over to the mainstream of society. Thankfully, families can drive to a different parish where they find a faithful priest. Also, we have the internet where there is an abundance of truthful proclamation and catechesis. I am delighted about the prayer app HALLOW, which is full of good Catholic spirituality and is used by millions of people across 170 countries.

Can you speak about the last part of your book in which you bring us hope?

As Christians, we are connected to the source of hope which is the living Christ. Through a Catholic life of prayer, sacraments and Bible reading, we can be in direct, living contact with Our Lord and strengthen our faith, so that we can be “A Non–Anxious Presence” in these turbulent times. I have borrowed this phrase from the title of the book by Mark Sayers (subtitle: How a Changing and Complex World Will Create a Remnant of Renewed Christian Leaders). We have to grow strong in our faith. The next revolution is upon us that will change everything: artificial intelligence. I am very glad that Pope Leo XIV will focus on AI and give us guidance. We have to live as children of God and be lights of hope in our surroundings. I am very encouraged by movements like Encounter Ministries where people are taught to use the charisms which Our Lord gave to His disciples, not just to the 12, not just to the 72, not just during the first 300 years of the Church, but to all children of God today.

The great apostasy is happening all around us. But Jesus Himself said that this has to happen before the Second Coming of Christ. We are in that phase, yet at the same time, a new, powerful discipleship is rising. It is still small in number, but if it is united with Jesus Christ, unexpected things will happen. Jesus became a human being like us, went to the Cross, rose from the dead, ascended to Heaven and will come again. He will save the world He created and will give everybody the possibility to accept salvation by being in a loving and living friendship with Him.
