SSPX and Similar Groups Seem to Ignore Parts of Church History...

ONLY TRUE RELIGION

DO NO ABANDON

For all who are baptized a Roman Catholic must die Roman Catholics to enter Heaven. A rejection of the papacy, a rejection of the Faith because of human reasoning shall not be accepted by the Eternal Father in Heaven. This morning I was reading through Catholic posts on Substack. I came across two posts from English Catholic commentator Mark Larmbert reguarding SSPX and similar groups. These comments counter the arguments that SSPX is using to justify their schmatic consecrations. Both of posts concern Church history that SSPX and similar groups seem to ignore.

The first post examines the current situation through the words St. Fancis de Sales:

A clearer understanding of what is ultimately problematic in the SSPX position comes from Saint Francis de Sales in The Catholic Controversy.

St Francis dismantles the Calvinist claim to an “extraordinary mission” apart from the ordinary authority of the Church. His argument is simple but devastating: if anyone can declare a “state of necessity” sufficient to justify ministry without lawful mission, then visible unity and ecclesial authority begin to collapse.

That cuts uncomfortably close to the SSPX argument!!

Just like the SSPX, the Reformers also claimed:

•  the hierarchy was corrupt
•  the faith was endangered
•  extraordinary measures were necessary

Of course the SSPX are not Protestants. They preserve Catholic doctrine, sacraments & apostolic succession. But the ecclesiological principle St Francis warns against still applies: who objectively determines the existence and limits of “necessity”? If the answer becomes “we do”, then the Church risks moving from visible authority to self-authenticated mission. That is precisely the danger St Francis de Sales saw in the Reformers.

I would disagree with Mark on one point: the SSPX feels like a Protestant group because several groups have broken off from it over theological or legal disagreements. These groups have gone on their merry ways, taking even more people away from Holy Mother Church.

The second post concerns those act like the Church was perfect before Vatican II.

One of the deepest problems I have with the radical anti-conciliarism which seems so prevelant on Catholic Social Media is that it seems unable to accept a profoundly Catholic truth: the Church can pass through humiliation, confusion, scandal and suffering without ceasing to be the Church.

Some appear to believe the true Church must always look externally pristine, triumphant and untouched by crisis. But that has never been Catholic history.

The Arian crisis saw bishops collapse into confusion. The Western Schism left Catholics unsure who the true pope even was. Renaissance Rome was morally corrupt. Entire nations fell into heresy. Yet the Church endured through all of it.

Why?

Because the Church’s indefectibility does not mean every churchman will speak perfectly, govern prudently or avoid scandal. It means Christ does not abandon His Church.

The Mystical Body follows the pattern of Christ Himself. And Christ did not redeem the world through worldly triumph, but through betrayal, humiliation and the Cross.

At times, some forms of “trad” polemic seem to reject this entirely. The visible Church appears wounded, therefore it must be false. The hierarchy appears confused, therefore the Church must have defected. But that is not Catholic ecclesiology. It is effectively a refusal to believe that the Church can suffer.

The saints never reasoned this way.

St Athanasius endured exile during the Arian crisis without declaring the Church a counterfeit sect. St Catherine of Siena confronted corruption in Rome while remaining fiercely devoted to the See of Peter.

The Church is holy because Christ is holy. Not because every age is free from darkness.

The Cross is not proof Christ has abandoned His Church.

Very often, it is where His fidelity is revealed most clearly.

Our Lady told us many times that the Pope may err, but he must still be followed:

CHOSEN WELL
"Your successor to Peter (Pope John Paul II) has been chosen well. We sat him upon the throne of Peter for the principal reason to return My Son's Church to its original state. 
    "Understand well, My children, that he is also a human being subject to error. But this does not mean that he is to be subjected to derision and hate, until you build up a fire within the hearts of those who are seeking to destroy him. Better that you pray for the Holy Father than to deride him.
    "Do not question him at this time, because I assure you, My children--as he will tell you in due time--I, too, have appeared to the Holy Father." - Our Lady, September 27, 1986

A REJECTION OF THE PAPACY SHALL NOT BE ACCEPTED

ONE TRUE FOUNDATION
"Many questions arise, My child, about My Son's House. There is only one true foundation--that is the House of My Son with Peter as the first ruler and head, and now your Vicar, Paul VI. All others have protested against the law and rule and broken away. They must be returned to the fold. However, My children, you are proceeding along a path of delusion. You will not bring these souls back to My Son's House by changing to meet their standards. Man must change to meet the standards of his God!" - Our Lady, December 6, 1974

She also warned that Church will go through a great trial. I can't think of a better way to describe the past 60 years.

WILL PROCEED THROUGH GREAT TRIAL
"The Eternal Father has set before you the rules and discipline for your salvation. They will not be replaced by the rules created by man to feed his worldly inclination for soul-destruction. Many will sell their souls to satan to get to the head.
     "The House of God, My Son's House, will proceed through great trial. All that is rotten will fall. Satan now rages and will do full battle in the House of God.
     "The greatest hope, My children, I can offer you is that the eventual victory over the evil will lie with your allegiance with My Son. The Father has full mastery over your world, permitting this time of trial in order to separate the sheep from the goats. You will be tried as metals in the fire." – Our Lady, February 10, 1974

REMAIN WITHIN THE FOLD
