The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has announced that the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group has entered the Caribbean Sea as part of the pre-planned Southern Seas 2026 deployment, a move that comes amid escalating tensions between the United States and communist Cuba.

The deployment follows a series of increasingly aggressive actions by the Trump administration toward Cuba’s communist regime, including newly unsealed federal criminal charges against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro and renewed discussion of potential military options against the island nation.

Powerful Carrier Strike Group Deploys to Caribbean

According to SOUTHCOM, the deployment includes the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68), Carrier Air Wing 17, the guided-missile destroyer USS Gridley (DDG-101), and the replenishment oiler USNS Patuxent (T-AO-201).

Carrier Air Wing 17 brings significant combat capability to the region, including F/A-18E Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, and C-2A Greyhound aircraft.

“Welcome to the Caribbean, Nimitz Strike Group!” SOUTHCOM said in a statement.

“The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), embarked Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17), USS Gridley (DDG 101) and USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201) are the epitome of readiness and presence, unmatched reach and lethality, and strategic advantage.”

Officials also highlighted the carrier’s extensive operational history.

“The USS Nimitz has proven its combat prowess across the globe, ensuring stability and defending democracy from the Taiwan Strait to the Arabian Gulf,” the statement added.

Southern Seas Exercise Includes Regional Allies

The deployment is part of Southern Seas 2026, the 11th iteration of the multinational exercise since its launch in 2007.

The operation includes maritime engagements, joint training exercises, and naval cooperation with allied nations throughout the Western Hemisphere, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Uruguay.

Before entering the Caribbean, the USS Nimitz recently participated in joint naval exercises with the Brazilian Navy off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

Commissioned in 1975, the USS Nimitz is currently serving what is expected to be one of its final operational deployments before its planned retirement in 2027.

Deployment Comes After Charges Against Raúl Castro

The carrier’s arrival coincides with a sharp escalation in U.S. pressure on Cuba’s communist leadership.

The announcement came on Cuba’s Independence Day and just days after the Department of Justice unsealed criminal charges against former Cuban President Raúl Castro.

Federal prosecutors accuse Castro of helping orchestrate the 1996 shootdown of two civilian aircraft operated by the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue, an attack that killed four people.

President Donald Trump praised the decision and suggested the administration remains focused on developments in Cuba.

“It’s a very big moment for people, not only Cuban Americans, but people who came from Cuba, that want to go back to Cuba, see their family in Cuba,” Trump said.

“We have Cuba on our mind.”

Trump Floats Military Option Against Communist Regime

The naval deployment also follows recent remarks in which President Trump openly discussed possible military options regarding Cuba.

Earlier this month, Trump suggested the United States could quickly take control of the island if necessary and referenced the potential use of a carrier strike group.

“We’ll have that come in. Stop about 100 yards offshore,” Trump said while discussing the possibility of deploying an aircraft carrier near Cuba.

“And they’ll say thank you very much, we surrender,” he added.

While administration officials have emphasized that the Southern Seas deployment was planned well in advance, the arrival of one of America’s most powerful carrier strike groups just miles from Cuba is likely to draw significant attention as relations between Washington and Havana continue to deteriorate.

With the Justice Department pursuing criminal charges against senior figures in the communist regime and the White House increasing pressure on Cuba’s leadership, the presence of the USS Nimitz adds another layer to a rapidly evolving confrontation in the Caribbean.
