The White House released a presidential message July 28 marking the 45th anniversary of the martyrdom of Blessed Stanley Rother, the first U.S.-born priest formally recognized as a martyr.

"Today, Melania and I join with American Catholics and people of faith all across the world in honoring the towering legacy of Father Stanley Rother — an Oklahoma farm boy, the first American-born martyr beatified by the Catholic Church, and a champion of human dignity who heroically laid down his life to bring the light of Jesus Christ to a people plagued by horrific darkness," President Donald Trump said in the statement.

Bl. Rother was shot and killed in his rectory in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, on July 28, 1981, after his pastoral ministry reportedly placed him on a government death list. According to the White House, three masked men entered the parish building around 1 a.m. and murdered him. He was 46.

Bl. Rother, born in Oklahoma in 1935, discerned a priestly vocation while in high school and entered the seminary in San Antonio, Texas. He was ordained in 1963 at age 28 and served in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for five years before joining the diocese’s mission in Guatemala.

There, he ministered to the Tz’utujil Maya people, learning their language and helping translate Scripture. He also supported local initiatives, including the construction of a school and hospital and the establishment of the region’s first Catholic radio station, according to the White House statement.

Bl. Rother’s ministry unfolded during Guatemala’s civil war, a decades-long conflict marked by deadly violence between militarist government forces and guerrilla forces. Thousands of Catholics were killed, and priests, catechists, and other Church workers faced increasing danger as they continued their ministries, as Zeale News previously reported.

The White House said that during this time, Bl. Rother "fearlessly" embodied "Christ’s commission to ‘make disciples of all nations.’"

After learning his name had appeared on a death list from the Guatemalan authoritarian regime, Bl. Rother temporarily returned to Oklahoma for safety. According to the White House, he went back to Guatemala several months later, however, explaining his decision with words that would become closely associated with his ministry: "The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger."

Pope Francis formally recognized Bl. Rother’s martyrdom in 2016, and he was beatified in Oklahoma City in 2017. The Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine in Oklahoma City has since become a major pilgrimage site, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors.

The White House said Bl. Rother has "stood as a living testament to the power of courage, sacrificial service, and fidelity to God" in the decades since his death.

"Today, we are reminded that Father Rother’s life and martyrdom are the fruits of America’s rich tradition of religious liberty," the statement said. "In his honor, we recommit to remaining vigilant so that our birthright of freedom endures in the face of every trial. We acknowledge with deep pride that America’s missionary zeal and generous spirit were, are, and will continue to be among the greatest forces of peace, justice, and flourishing in human history."

"Above all," the White House concluded, "we pray that every soul of faith, every lover of freedom, and every seeker of truth will forever remember the name and treasure the story of Father Stanley Rother."

As Zeale News previously reported, a documentary about Bl. Rother’s life will premiere in theaters nationwide in August. The archdiocese produced the movie, titled "American Martyr: The Stanley Rother Story," in partnership with Fathom Entertainment.

The documentary features firsthand testimony, archival footage, and a retelling of Bl. Rother’s life and ministry. Tickets are available through Fathom Entertainment’s website.
