The following was written by John Paul Wohlscheid. This story was published in the bulletin of St. Mary's Church, Lowell, Michigan. Maybe you could have it published in your own local parish bulletin.
Saint Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890 in a town in northern Italy named Corinaldo. She was the third of seven children born to Luigi and Assunta Goretti. In 1896, Luigi decided that the family had to move because the land around Corinaldo was too barren to support the family. He decided to move the family south, closer to Rome. They settled in the town of Ferriere. Luigi worked as a sharecropper for Count Mazzoleni. The land was swampy and infected with malaria laden mosquitoes. The family lived in a old cheese factory. Luigi worked hard to repair both the fields and their new home. He soon contracted malaria.
While they were surrounded with hardships, the Goretti family did not forget their Faith. They always made sure that they went to Mass every Sunday. Luigi and Assunta made sure that they instilled this devotion to the Faith in their children. Maria had a very strong devotion to Our Lady and would pray the Rosary often. She was spiritually advanced beyond her years and had a better understanding of her Faith than most. She was known for her modesty, obedience, seriousness and willingness to help the family by doing chores while other children played.
When they had first arrived, Luigi tried to run the farm on his own, in a effort to earn more money for his family, but it proved too much for him due to his illness. Count Mazzoleni brought in two men to help him: Giovanni Serenelli and his son, 18-year-old Alessandro. The Serenelli’s moved in with the Goretti’s, making more work for Assunta and Maria. Giovanni took advantage of Luigi’s worsening condition to take a share of the profits from the farm. In April of 1900, Luigi died from a combination of illness and overwork. Giovanni forced Assunta to take her husband’s place in the fields by threatening to throw them out. Maria then took over the care of the household and the younger children.
Giovanni’s son, Alessandro, spent his free time reading lurid magazines and decorated his room with impure pictures. He fixed his misguided affections on Maria. He gave her gifts and did his best to flatter her. He even proposed to her several times. Maria repulsed him because she loved God too much. Alessandro would not take no for an answer. Finally, on June 5, 1902 he made his move. While Assunta was working in the fields and his father slept in another part of the house, Alessandro found Maria in the kitchen and tried to persuade her to give herself to him. He threatened to kill her if she refused. She chose death instead of sin. Alessandro proceeded to stab Maria fourteen times before fleeing. Maria lay bleeding on the floor for an hour before she was found. She was rushed to a nearby hospital. In an effort to save her, the doctors operated without anesthetic. She endured all without complaining. Knowing that she was dying, Maria forgave Alessandro and received Holy Communion of the last time. She died after 20 hours of suffering on July 6, 1902.
Alessandro was found and sentenced to thirty years in prison. At first, he was unrepentant. Three years into his sentence, he was visited by the local bishop, Bishop Giovanni Blandini. After the visit, Alessandro wrote a letter to the bishop thanking him for his visit and telling him of a dream he had had. In the dream, Maria appeared to him standing in a garden. She gave him several lilies, symbols of purity, and they burned in his hands. After the dream, Alessandro turned his life around and reformed. After 27 years in prison, he was released. The first thing that he did was to visit Assunta and beg her forgiveness. She told him, “If my daughter could forgive you, who am I to withhold forgiveness.” Both Assunta and Alessandro were present in Rome when Maria was beatified and declared a saint. On the day of her beatification, Pope Pius XII approached Assunta. “When I saw the Pope coming, I prayed, Madonna, please help me. He put his hand on my head and said, blessed mother, happy mother, mother of a Blessed!” Pope Pius XII canonized her on June 24, 1950. In his homily, Pope Pius XII said, “With splendid courage she surrendered herself to God and His grace and so gave her life to protect her virginity.” She is honored on July 6th. She is the patron of teenage girls and modern youth.

there is a tremendous white cross now forming in the sky. It's a brilliant
cross. And now--it's a large cross, but behind it, I see many, many smaller
crosses. They are also white. It's like a field, a whole field of crosses.
