Call No Man "Father"..

"A true legally-ordained priest is far superior than any man, as he represents Me in the Godhead." - Jesus, May 23, 1979

(The following is taken from the booklet, "Why the Catholic Church says 'Investigate'", + Imprimatur Joseph E. Ritter, Archbishop of St. Louis, January 24, 1949): 

   Christ came into the world to free men from their sins and from the power of evil. But He also freed them from a lot of legalistic nonsense to which they had been subjected by the “traditions of men.”

   Take the Sabbath law, for instance. The law of God was simple: abstain from work on the Sabbath and don't force anybody else to do work. But the Scribes and Pharisees spent years arguing over the most trivial points, binding men with a burden of minute regulations. The great schools of the Rabbis argued over such important matters as whether an egg could be eaten that had been laid on the Sabbath. They perverted the idea of the Sabbath rest to forbid men to perform even an act of necessary charity for someone else. Christ had to remind them sharply: “The Sabbath was made for men, and not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 11:27).

   Christ insisted on the spirit of the law that gives life, rather than the letter that kills. Yet some have apparently missed the whole point of Christ's message. They look to the Bible merely as a series of cold rules ... to be rigorously applied in the sense that seems right to them. They insist that any attempt to soften their hard literalness is an evasion, “explaining away God's law.”

  Thus some men are firmly convinced that they have no immortal souls. “(God) alone has immortality” (1 Tim. 6:16), says St. Paul, and not all the words in the world will convince them that while God is immortal in His own right, He has made man's soul after His own image in this respect.

   “John Brown is a truthful man,” is a statement which in their eyes is plainly contrary to God's word. For the same St. Paul (Rom. 3:4) made their position (to them) quite clear: “God is true, and every man is a liar.”

   If we want to, we can make our whole lives a rigid set of meaningless rules . . . searching out various texts of Scripture and applying the words literally and senselessly. We can even go to the ultimate in nonsense and ban from our speech any reference to a man as “good.” We cannot say, “John Brown is a good man,” for our Lord very plainly tells us that "No one is good but only God" (Luke 18 :19).

  Ridiculous? Perhaps . . . yet a great number of people think Catholics violate Christ's command by calling their priests “Father.” Very plainly, they say, He told us to “call no man on earth your father” (Matt. 23: 19).

  Now Christ was either forbidding us the use of a perfectly good and beautiful word ... or His literal words must be rightly understood. If one will carefully read the whole text from St. Matthew's Gospel . . . without trying to make the words appear critical of Catholics or Catholic practices . . . but trying actually to find out what our Lord meant to say ... he will find that Catholics can just as rightfully speak of “Father Smith” as a Protestant may refer to his pastor as “Mister Smith.”

   In the first place, Christ's words come as a climax to a denunciation of the Scribes and Pharisees. He is condemning the abuse by which they assumed such titles as “Father,” “Master,” “Rabbi,” without due subordination to God, as if they had a right to them through their own excellence. It was this sense—the abuse, not the proper use of a word—that He condemned.  

What St. Paul said  

    St. Paul makes this clear enough. Surely he was familiar with the mind of Christ in the matter, and he gives what amounts to an explanation of this passage for his disciples at Ephesus when he speaks of  “... the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ from whom all fatherhood in Heaven and on earth received its name . . .” (Eph. 3:15).

   There is, therefore, a fatherhood in heaven (spiritual) and a fatherhood on earth (natural) which derives its title from the supreme Fatherhood of God. Rightly do we call on God as our Father, having been given the privilege by Christ. Rightly, in subordination to this Fatherhood, do we give the title “father” to that parent who is responsible for our birth into this world. And rightly do we give the title “father” to the priest who, as the minister of Christ, imparts Christian life and character in baptism and whose duty and concern it is to serve the religious needs of Catholics from the cradle to the grave. 

Fits the office 

   It is only natural that such a beautiful title should have been used. There is no law obliging Catholics to do so. It has developed among them spontaneously as a custom in English-speaking countries and elsewhere. In many other countries, it is not widely prevalent. But when one understands the office of a priest and his obligations to his people, the title is seen to be especially appropriate . . . nor is it contrary to the Scripture, if the Scripture is read with intelligence.

   St. Paul himself did not hesitate to assume the title of spiritual father. The Corinthians he addressed as his “dearest children,” and reminded them: “although you have ten thousand tutors in Christ, yet you have not many fathers. For in Christ Jesus, through the gospel, did I beget you” (1 Cor. 4: 15). He called Titus his "beloved son."

   If St. Paul could call his disciples “children” and “son” ... if he could say that he had begotten them and that they “had not many fathers” . . . are we not reducing the gospel to a silly set of interpretations when we attempt to prove by it that a priest should not be called “father”?

Don't misread Scripture

  You can't please everybody. Sometimes you can't please anybody. If we had to respect every interpretation that some people fancy they can put on the Scripture, it would be difficult to say how we might ever refer to a clergyman. “Father” is out, they say. “Reverend” is unacceptable to some, because they say only God is worthy of reverence (“No one is good but only God.”) Curiously enough, no one has yet gotten around to condemning “Mister.” We must expect it to be merely a matter of time, however, for does not Christ say plainly: “Neither be called Masters; for one only is your Master, the Christ”? (Matt. 23: 10). “Mister” is merely a later English form of the word “Master”—look it up in the dictionary.

   But there is no need to impoverish our language by misreadings of the Scripture.

   Because of his spiritual position, the Catholic priest has every right to be called “Father” just as our natural fathers have this right by reason of their relationship to us. Nor did Christ condemn this beautiful title by which Catholics testify to their belief in and respect for His ministry.

If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1605.

If you are of the Dutch Reformed church, you recognize Michaelis Jones as founder, because he originated your religion in New York in 1628.

If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.

If you are a Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy as its founder.

If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as 'Church of the Nazarene," "Pentecostal Gospel." "Holiness Church," "Pilgrim Holiness Church," "Jehovah's Witnesses," your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past century.

If you are Roman Catholic, you know that your religion was founded in the year 33 by Jesus Christ the Son of God, and it is still the same Church.

"I ask you all not to abandon My Church. Do not judge My Church by the priest, for in his human nature he can err. But I assure you I am using him, as a legally ordained priest, to bring you My Body and Blood. Do not go seeking elsewhere, for you will lose your baptismal right, and you will no longer be accepted as a Roman Catholic, and you will not enter into the highest place of Heaven, the Kingdom of Paradise." - Jesus, October 6, 1980
