Another UK Catholic adoption agency opts for secularization...

The St. David's Children's Society, the Catholic Church's adoption agency in three Welsh dioceses of Cardiff, Menevia and Wrexham, has voted to cut its ties with the Catholic Church in the face of the new law that requires them to adopt children to homosexual partners. The Society said it would cut its ties with the Catholic Church in order to comply with the Labour government's Sexual Orientation Regulations (SORs), part of the Equality Act 2006, that ban "discrimination" against homosexuals in the provision of goods and services.

The Society is the oldest adoption agency in Wales and the third largest Catholic adoption agency in England and Wales. In the year ending March 31, 2006, it placed 30 children with families, 14 percent of all Welsh adoptees that year. When the legislation passed, then-Prime Minister Tony Blair, who later claimed to have converted to Catholicism, gave the Catholic agencies until January 2009 to comply.

"The situation is one in which really we have to either fully comply with the regulations or to close," the St. David's Children's Society's director told the Catholic Herald.

Gerry Cooney said, "The situation is one in which really we have to either fully comply with the regulations or to close. We are in the process of fully complying with the regulations. That will mean separation from the dioceses. We are aiming to be fully compliant in the near future."

There is growing anger among Catholics over the readiness of the adoption agencies to abandon their religious ethos. Neil Addison, a Liverpool-based Catholic barrister and author of a text book on religious discrimination and hatred law, said, "Charity trustees seem to assume that they can stop being a Catholic charity and then simply carry on." But he said the charities were "established by Catholics and given Catholic money on the basis that it would be used in accordance with Catholic beliefs. To use its funds for un-Catholic purposes seems unethical and possibly illegal."

In the Catholic Herald in June, Addison praised efforts by some Catholic dioceses to defend their religious rights, saying, "The Church may not win, but if Catholic agencies are to be closed and deprived of their right to provide these services, let that be done - and be seen to be done - by the Government and not by the Church."

The dismantling of the Catholic institution in England and Wales is starting to attract attention. Writing on the sale and demolition of English Catholic churches at his Daily Telegraph blog, Damian Thompson, editor of the Catholic Herald, said, "I think public opinion is waking up to the crisis of leadership in the Catholic Church in England and Wales, which is in such sharp contrast to the sure-footed statesmanship of Pope Benedict XVI."

Bishop Patrick O'Donohue of Lancaster diocese, in his recently released book on the condition of the Catholic Church in Britain was critical of his fellow bishops who, he said, had not given a comprehensive response either to the general secularisation of the country, or to the specific threat to Catholic social assistance work. He wrote of his "disappointment that our Bishops' Conference recently could not agree on a collegial response to the Government's legislation on same-sex adoption."

In his own diocese, the Catholic adoption agency rejected a suggestion made by Bishop O'Donohue to adopt a totally Catholic ethos in order to maintain the integrity of its services without government interference. Because the Equality Act also prevents discrimination "on the grounds of religion or belief," he said, changing the constitution of Catholic Caring Services to ensure that children be adopted exclusively according to Catholic teaching on marriage would have provided a safeguard against prosecution under the new law. This would have meant that the agency would not adopt children to either homosexual "partners" or to single or divorced people or unmarried cohabiting people. Instead, however, the agency announced it would close its doors.

With no comprehensive response or defence plan among the UK's Catholic bishops, the adoption agencies have been left to find their own solutions to the government's assault. Since the passage of the SORs, Catholic adoption agencies in the dioceses of Leeds, Salford and Lancaster have indicated they will close.

The archdiocese of Westminster has said it will continue to operate adoption agencies and fight the law in court, while the agencies in Nottingham and Northampton dioceses, and of the three southern dioceses of Southwark, Arundel and Brighton, and Portsmouth have chosen to secularise. None of the Catholic adoption agencies in Britain fully adhere to Catholic teaching on the need of children to have both a mother and a father who are lawfully married, allowing children as a matter of routine to be adopted by single, divorced or cohabiting people.

The fight over Catholic adoption agencies and religious rights is already starting to affect children in need. Official figures last year revealed a 13 percent fall in the number of children adopted, in spite of a target to increase adoptions by 50 percent.

Bishop O'Donohue told the Catholic Herald this week that the loss of daily, integrated practice of the Faith among Catholics has left the Church in this country "bland and unrealistic" in the face of attacks from secularists.

"During the consultation, some ugly things began to raise their heads," he said. "People are very attached to their buildings and they didn't give a damn - excuse my language - what it was that their schools and churches were offering."

Study: Homosexual lifestyle strongly linked to depression, suicide...

A new study in the United Kingdom has revealed that homosexuals are about 50% more likely to suffer from depression and engage in substance abuse than the rest of the population, reports Health24.com.

After analyzing 25 earlier studies on sexual orientation and mental health, researchers, in a study published in the medical journal BMC Psychiatry, also found that the risk of suicide jumped over 200% if an individual had engaged in a homosexual lifestyle.

These findings strongly support the results of similar studies conducted in the United States, which have unveiled the severe physical and psychological health risks associated with homosexual behavior. Drs. Paul and Kirk Cameron of the Family Research Institute revealed in 2007 that research shows that the lifespan of a homosexual is on average 24 years shorter than that of a heterosexual. As a health threat, even smoking pales in comparison, as studies show smoking can shorten one's life by only 1 to 7 years on average.

While the Health 24 article suggested that homosexuals may be pushed to substance abuse and suicide because of anti-homosexual cultural and family pressures, empirical tests have shown that there is no difference in homosexual health risk depending on the level of tolerance in a particular environment. Homosexuals in the United States and Denmark - the latter of which is acknowledged to be highly tolerant of homosexuality - both die on average in their early 50's, or in their 40's if AIDS is the cause of death. Dr. Rick Fitzgibbons, a psychiatrist and member of the Catholic Medical Association, says there is evidence that homosexuality is itself a manifestation of a psychological disorder accompanied by a host of mental health problems, including "major depression, suicidal ideation and attempts, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, conduct disorder, low self-esteem in males and sexual promiscuity with an inability to maintain committed relationships."

Cardinal Justin Rigali, the Archbishop of Philadelphia is always ready to answer questions, even the hard ones. He spoke with LifeSiteNews.com last week at the International Eucharistic Congress about the Church's teaching on sexuality, in the context of the current attack on the traditional definition of marriage.

Asked why it has become more common to see some elements within the Church promoting what is contrary to official Church teaching on homosexuality, Cardinal Rigali was quick to point out that it is not 'the Church' but members of the Church which do so at times.

"This goes back to the time of St. Paul," explained the Cardinal, "St. Paul says they will be teachers with itchy ears." He added: "They will come up with all kinds of doctrines and this is what's happened in the history of the Church and the history of the world and this will continue to happen."

Cardinal Rigali said however that it was an "aberration" to justify "homosexual conduct and worse than that homosexual marriage."

"The Church accepts people as they are," he said. "Jesus says the church is like a net, it pulls in everybody, everybody belongs to the church, there are sinners, there are saints, there are people with wrong ideas. But the Church continues to proclaim what Jesus taught."

"There is no room in the Church for the acceptance of aberrational ideas," he said. "There is room in the church to accept, to understand and to love people whoever they may be. Not to tell them that what they are advocating is right, not to justify it. That is quite different. That is totally, totally different."

Cardinal Rigali, who is also the President of the Pro-Life Committee of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, suggested that no amount of pressure would get the Church to alter its position.

"There are some people that say the church is intolerant - no! We accept people but we cannot be unfaithful to Christ. We will not accept gay marriage. The church has explained this over, and over and over again and she will have to continue to explain it."

Addressing people with same sex attraction he said, "these are good people and our way of treating them is very important. The respect we show them and even the understanding of their personal situations. But just because someone is in a personal situation does not mean we can change our teaching to accommodate the person."

On getting the teaching of the Church across in today's culture, Cardinal Rigali said "The Church has to continue, St. Paul says, ‘praedica verbum’, preach the word in season and out of season and that's what we do."

However, he added, "This is something we have to teach in the most effective way possible, with clarity yes, with fidelity yes, with sensitivity. We can't take people and choke them and say you're going to be doing it and you're going to follow the teachings of the Church and this is the teaching of the Church. No. St. Paul says in omnia patientia doctrina, speaking to Timothy, ‘with all patience and following the teaching’, following the teaching, these are the two elements."

"We present the beauty of human sexuality," he said, "we explain God's plan. We try to understand people who have the same sex attraction we try to help them; try not to speak platitudes to them but tell them what God's plan is and how they are to face their life."

The Philadelphia Archbishop concluded: "That's why we have organizations like Courage and Encourage because for parents it's a very, very difficult thing. But God's plan is to be presented in all its beauty, all its power with fidelity."
