No One Knows Who’s Posting These Mysterious Christmas Signs...

The Blaze reported on December 3, 2013:

Mysterious Christmas signs are popping up all over Redmond, Wash., with a central message boldly proclaiming that “it’s OK to say Merry Christmas.”

The signs appear to be an attempt to encourage citizens to abandon more generic season’s greetings like “Happy Holidays.”

KCPQ-TV reported that the no one really knows where the green signs with white text originated, but that they are strategically placed throughout the city: at the library, outside city hall and near local schools.

In addition to reminding locals that saying Merry Christmas is permissible, Bible verses are also present on the signs.

One verse, Romans 1:16, reads, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”

A longer verse from Luke also appears below that text.

While the city is claiming that the messages weren’t posted by the government, Mayor John Marchione plans to allow them to continue hanging, as he told KCPQ-TV that they are placed in the city’s right of way — a free-speech area.

“This is the second year I’ve seen the signs,” Marchione told the Redmond Reporter. “They’re in a public right-of-way and we are treating them like a freedom-of-speech issue.”

The public has had a variety of reactions to the mystery signs. Some like them, while others find the message overboard and the presence of the verses offensive.

So far, no one has taken credit for the signs.
