The Islamic Republic News Agency reported on August 25, 2002:

Syrian Information Minister Adnan Omran said on Sunday that the US threats targeted the entire Arab world. Dismissing the US allegation that Iraq is developing weapons of mass destruction as "absurd", Omran said that the Arabs are strongly opposing any aggression against Iraq. Speaking to reporters, he hoped that reason and wisdom would prevail over US adventurist plans. "For them, no country deserves sovereignty. Their interference in the internal affairs (of Arab states) are a reminder of the colonial period," he said. Syria accuses "Zionist parties" within the US administration of seeking to impose economic sanctions on Syria like those in force against Iran and Libya.
