Heat records shattered throughout Europe...

Heat wave in France claims 3,000 lives (This is London, August 14, 2003):

The heatwave in France has caused some 3,000 deaths, directly or indirectly, since late July, France's national health authority said today.
The authority, part of the health ministry, gave the estimate in a statement, which also described the surge in death rates since July 25 "an epidemic of heat-related deaths".

Agence France-Presses reported on August 5, 2003:

The heatwave that is searing large parts of western Europe looked set to hit new records, with France experiencing its highest temperatures since World War II.
     Forecasters said thermometers in Paris could break through the symbolic 40 degrees Celsius mark (104 Fahrenheit) -- which has happened only once before in the 130 years of modern-day record-keeping.
     "The current heat is totally exceptional -- even for August," said Dominique Escale of state weather office Meteo France.
     On Monday the southwestern city of Bordeaux saw temperatures of 40.2 degrees and Montauban in the Lot department -- a popular holiday destination also in the southwest -- hit 41.8 degrees. On the Atlantic sea-board temperatures were already 32 degrees at sunrise.
     The dog days are caused by an anti-cyclone which has anchored itself firmly over the west European land mass, holding off rain-bearing depressions over the Atlantic and funnelling hot air north from Africa.
     The effects of the weather pattern are aggravated by the long dry period that preceded it, meteorologists said. Because the landscape contains little moisture, less of the sun's energy is taken up in creating evaporation.
     Though there was no clear evidence to blame global warming and greenhouse gas production, *scientists at the World Meteorological Office point out that the world's ten hottest recorded years have all taken place since 1987.
     Forecasters said there were no signs of the weather breaking and the heat was set to continue at least to the start of next week.

Hottest days ever recorded in Great Britain...

London reached 35.3C - the highest ever recorded in the capital - as the UK enjoyed the hottest day of the year so far. (BBC News, August 6, 2003)

CBS News Correspondent Steve Holt reports the mercury rose to 100.6 degrees in Great Britain Sunday, a new record, and while it's cooled off some Monday, the rest of Europe isn't so lucky. It's been nearly a hundred for days in Paris, where the average August temperature is 75. It's even worse in Spain, where temps could reach 108 for the rest of this week. (CBS, August 11, 2003)

Record temperatures in California...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –– Record temperatures are searing parts of the West, with triple-digit readings in California, and meteorologists say there's more sweating to come.
     The heat has boosted the fire danger and prompted state officials on Wednesday to warn that a Stage 2 power alert was likely. A Stage 2 alert would call on large industrial and commercial users to cut their consumption to keep millions of air conditioners humming.
     Residents of more than a dozen cities endured record highs on Tuesday, including 112 at Lancaster; 109 at Sacramento; 106 at Medford, Ore., 103 at Grand Junction, Colo., 102 at Reno, Nev.; and 84 at Quillayute, Wash. Non-record readings included 114 at Needles. The heat is likely to continue through Friday.
     "Looks like Wednesday's going to be the hottest day in this heat wave," said National Weather Service meteorologist Ken Newman in Monterey. "Another scorcher." Wednesday's forecast high for Reno, elevation 4,500 feet, was 107, which would be an all-time record, the National Weather Service said.
     But, as they say in Arizona, it's a dry heat. "I'd rather have 105 degrees in Reno than 100 in Washington D.C.," said weather service meteorologist Gary Barbato. "They have all that humidity ..." Deliveryman Mark Gillaspy had to lug 6-gallon water jugs through the heat to his customers Tuesday in Fresno.
     "The hotter it is, the harder I have to work," Gillaspy said. "And the more patience I have to find within myself, or ask myself how stupid I am for doing this job." Temperatures climbed well above 100 in Baker, a stop on the route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, but residents are accustomed to heat in the desert city. "It will get hotter," said Reynaldo Dominguez, a waiter. "It usually gets up to 120 degrees during the summer."
     The high demand for electricity to run air conditioners was compounded Tuesday by power plant breakdowns that shut down enough generating capacity to power more than 1.6 million homes. The California Independent System Operator, which manages the state's power grid, declared a Stage 1 power alert, meaning it had less than a 7 percent reserve of electricity. Rolling blackouts could be declared if a Stage 3 alert is reached.
     "We're looking at a challenging week," said ISO spokesman Gregg Fishman. In Oakland's fire-prone hills, officials asked residents to stop opening fire hydrants to cool off, noting there had been three grass fires in two days. Near Santa Clarita, a northern suburb of Los Angeles, a 60-acre wildfire that burned dangerously close to homes was contained, but firefighters continue to keep close watch, fearing the heat and wind could kick up the flames again.

Floods, famines, sin, impurity, immorality . . .
    Jesus - "There will be much woe set upon the earth by 666: accidents that are not accidents, floods, famines, sin, impurity, immorality. My child, you will go about your earth - My children, you will all go about your earth wondering if mass insanity has set upon mankind. Oh, yes, My children, sin is surely insanity. As time accelerates and becomes an era of evil, My children, many will feel that life has reversed itself, for the good will be persecuted and the evil shall be glorified. As it was in the time of Noah and Sodom, so it is now, but the evils are far worse and more sophisticated. But as it was in those days, My children, so it will be now. The Chastisement is fast approaching upon mankind. Do not slow or slacken the pace of your work because of scoffers. You bring upon yourselves this chastisement . . .

Hurricanes, whirlwinds, floods, great heat and plagues upon mankind . . .
    Our Lady - "My child and My children, I have wandered with great speed to and fro across you earth gathering My children who will listen to Me in the last stages of My pleadings to mankind. Yes, My children, I say the last stages, because you are fast approaching the close of your era.

My children, there is a most terrible calamity approaching mankind, and I beg you, as your Mother, to avoid this, to get down now upon your knees and do penance, atonement, and sacrifice to the Eternal Father Who has already been offended too much." The world shall not come to an end . . .
    Our Lady - "My child and My children, do not be affrighted by My words. The world shall not come to an end. The Eternal Father has given His promise to mankind, that the world shall never be made extinct again, as in the past with the time of the floods.
