Archbishop Raymond L. Burke said Friday that Catholics in St. Louis who vote for political candidates supportive of abortion rights have committed a grave sin in the eyes of the church, and should confess and do penance before receiving Communion. Burke's comments, made in a telephone interview as he prepared to depart for Rome, amplified comments he made Thursday on KMOX radio and in the Post-Dispatch this month about the importance of the abortion issue for Catholics when they go to the polls this year. But as some top area Democrats see it, Burke is saying that it will be a grave sin for area Catholics to vote for the likely Democratic nominee for president, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., or for either of the major Democrats vying for Missouri governor: incumbent Bob Holden or state Auditor Claire McCaskill. All three support abortion rights; McCaskill and Kerry also are Catholic. Most of the top Republicans on this year's ticket - including President George W. Bush and Missouri Secretary of State Matt Blunt, the favored GOP candidate for governor - oppose most abortions. "As Republicans, we believe in the rights of the unborn," said state GOP spokesman Paul Sloca. As a result, Burke's latest comments touched off strong negative reactions on Friday from many area Democratic officeholders who also are Catholic, regardless of their views on abortion.
