Surviving the Surveillance State...

McAlvany Intelligence Advisor reported on July 2013:

The emerging surveillance society discussed above is a fact of life, which is not likely to change soon - if ever. As Mark Nestmann, who has written many books about privacy over the years, once said to this writer - privacy, as we all once knew it, is now a thing of the past - it no longer exists. However, if you believe in privacy, or could in the future be labeled as “a person of interest” to Big Brother, or as “an enemy of the state,” are there any things you can do to protect or enhance your privacy? Yes, a few - but only if you are willing to be labeled as a “paranoid nut” by friends or family:

1. Never say anything of a private or sensitive nature (especially financial) that you would definitely not want Big Brother to know: over the Internet, on Facebook or any social media, on Skype, or on your cell phone (or on any phone) especially on a Smart phone, or in text messaging.

2. Start to “think” about what you are saying online or on a phone, and if you wouldn’t say it directly to a government agent, maybe you should not be saying it.

3. Keep subject lines on emails brief and innocuous. When forwarding emails, delete the names of others receiving that email.

4. Avoid putting a lot of family pictures or private family information on Facebook or other social media, as it is all streamed into NSA computers.

5. On sensitive purchases which could be deemed politically incorrect now or in the future, such as a firearm or ammunition, where possible, use cash since all credit/debit card transactions are monitored and recorded by the NSA, as are all payments by check.

As much as possible, use cash for day-to-day transactions - though now that’s getting more and more difficult. Wean yourself off of your non-stop use of credit and debit cards, and slowly build up your cash reserves for the day when the banks may be closed or the ATMs frozen.

6. Avoid very private conversations on or around your Smart phone since most newer Smart phones are also listening (and tracking) devices - even if you are not on the phone or even if they are turned off. Phones that can be disabled by removing the battery are preferable.

7. Do not put travel information or itineraries in emails, or have air or hotel confirmations sent by email.

8. Be cautious of using certain words online or on cell phones - there are several hundred of them that can get you labeled as a “potential terrorist” and trigger closer scrutiny by Big Brother. Avoid jokes (as you would in an airport security line) that could trigger closer scrutiny.

9. Living in a poor, low-tech Third World country (which very few Americans will ever do) puts you much further from 24/7 government surveillance.

10. Consider using TrueCrypt or another email encryption service if you want to enhance your online privacy. TrueCrypt can encrypt your entire hard drive, your entire USB drive, or make a secure file container on any drive. The software is open source with no back doors. 11. TextSecure (from Whisper Systems) has a secure texting app, which is free, can encrypt the stored texts on your phone, and sends/receives texts securely to anyone who has the app. It can only be used with Android at the moment.

12. Avoid using the Google search engine unless you really want to help Big Brother build your personal profile even faster. More private online search engines are: startpage.com, as mentioned earlier in this article; duckduckgo.com; or ixquick.com.

13. Sending sensitive information by mail is 9% the most private, because the near bankrupt US Post Office and various federal agencies (and most post offices around the world) do not have the physical manpower to open most letters. However, FedEx and UPS are probably no longer private as they are thought to be opening packages and documents for the government ~ recording the contents, and probably scanning the documents.

14. Do not keep sensitive documents or valuables in bank safety deposit boxes, as they are no longer private and can be secretly entered by Big Brother.

15. The most important thing you can do to enhance your privacy (in a very unprivate world) is to develop a mindset that continually asks or thinks: “is this private?” or “do I mind if this information goes into the NSA Utah Data Center computer base to help them build my personal profile (or dossier) more accurately?” If you don’t mind, go for it - let it all hang out. If you do mind, then be cautious, circumspect, and wise.

Finally, get a copy of George Orwell’s 1984 and read (or reread) it. It is an excellent preview of coming attractions. And start thinking like the people of East Germany before 1991, who had to deal with the Stasi East German Secret Police) and their surveillance society (albeit, a very low-tech system compared to the one emerging in America today).

And be prepared - the Stasi may be coming to a neighborhood near you!
