Grand Haven City Council Votes to Turn Cross into an Anchor...

The Grand Haven City Council has voted to turn the large cross on Dewey Hill into an anchor after disputes about having the religious symbol on city property.
For decades, the cross has stood on Dewey Hill overlooking the Grand River for about 15 days out of each year: 10 Sundays every summer and three to five days over the Easter weekend.
It has been at the center of several debates over the past few months because the property is city-owned, and cross is maintained by the city. Monday, the city council voted 3-2 to turn the 48-foot-tall cross into an anchor and limit access to the property.
Opponents were prepared to sue the city over the cross. Brian Plescher said he and other people who wanted the cross to come down planned to file the preliminary paperwork to sue within the month. He said he had talked to attorneys Tuesday, and as long as the city follows through with its decision, there won’t be any need to file the suit.
“We’ll remain vigilant and continue to monitor the situation and go that route again if we need to,” Plescher said.
Plescher said the cross had bugged him for years.
“I was offended in the sense that it was government speech, and had it been a cross on private land or a church’s parking lot I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about it. But because it was municipal, it changes everything,” said Plescher. “On this case, it’s whether or not the cross is constitutional or not and I think the city knew all along that it wasn’t.”
He said the decision to change it into an anchor is also a victory for civil rights.
“I think this is very good for the community, and I was very pleased to see that one of the council members said that they need to begin to recognize the diversity that’s present in the community,” Plescher said. “I think the more we recognize minorities, religious minorities, ethnic minorities, it’s good for the city economically and just for the vibrancy of the culture as well.”
Plescher lives in Grand Haven Township, and the others initially spearheading the effort to take the cross down live in Norton Shores. Responding to questions about that, Plescher defended his actions by saying he is still a part of the community even if he doesn’t live within the city limits.
“We’re still very active in the city; this is the community where we live,” said Plescher.
But many in Grand Haven are upset the cross is being removed. Mayor Geri McCaleb pointed out several times that the discord came from those who don’t live in the city.
“It’s an interesting place where we are in our nation where one person can come in to a community of 10,000 and cause this to happen,” said Mayor Geri McCaleb.
Two Facebook pages about the cross — one urging leaving it up and the other taking it down — show a disproportionate number of people in favor of keeping the cross — something McCaleb said she supports.
“It’s just sad to see something like that coming down because of people from the outside coming in with lawyers from Washington, D.C. threatening a lawsuit because you’re violating somebody’s civil rights,” said McCaleb.
Hers was one of the two votes against taking the cross down.
She said she realized there could be a lawsuit and says they did spend a lot of time defending the city because of the cross. But she said some things are worth fighting for and that, for her, the cross is one of those things.
She said she also believed the city was in a good position if it did come to a lawsuit.
“It’s expensive if you get sued, and you lose, you pay the other guy’s attorney fees and that’s daunting. You don’t want to spend your society’s taxpayer dollars on that sort of thing. But on the other hand, there are principles, things that are worth fighting for,” said McCaleb. “I think this is that borderline of you’re standing in the way of 15 days out of the year of people being able to express themselves, and I find that unfair and petty. I find it sad, I find it intolerant.”
