Deep down, Jay Schwandt figured the odds of having a baby girl were long. This time around -- he and wife Kateri already have 12 boys -- he was right.

"I was thinking, 'If this is a girl, I don't know what my reaction is going to be,'" Schwandt said, talking about the moment his wife gave birth to their 13th child.

"But I'm convinced that medically, it's just not possible," he said.

The Rockford couple, a day after the birth of their son, took time out Thursday, May 14 to talk about the national hubbub surrounding their all-boy family, the pleasant difficulty in choosing a name and whether or not more children could be in their future.

Mother and baby are doing well at Mercy Health Saint Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The boy, at 22 inches long and weighing eight pounds, 15 ounces, was born shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 13.

On Friday, the family announced they named him Francisco Matthew.

When Francisco was born,The first thing the father noticed was the hair. As he puts it, most of his children were born with "cue ball" bald heads.

"This is only the second one we've had that had a whole head of hair," the proud father said.

The family has been in the national spotlight since Kateri neared her delivery date last week, predominantly because the odds are small for such a large family with no girls. A "Good Morning America" crew was at the hospital Wednesday.

The couple is taking the publicity in stride.

"We were completely caught off guard with number 12. We were a little more prepared this time," Jay Schwandt said.

"It doesn't bother me at all, but Kateri is more of a private person," he said.

The Schwandts say the significance of the May 13th birth is not lost on them. It's their 13th child, and Kateri was the 13th child among her siblings.

The family had difficulty choosing a name after the birth Wednesday morning. They sought consensus among their children but, alas, could find none.

"This was actually very stressful and difficult," Schwandt wrote about the naming process on his Facebook page.

In his post, Schwandt explained the name relates to the family's Catholic faith.

May 13, the day of Francisco's birth, is the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, a title referring to the Virgin Mary.

In 1917, Francisco was one of three shepherd children in Portugal to see an apparition of Mary.

As for the critics on social media about having so many children, Jay Schwandt said he tries not to pay attention to that.

He disagrees with them.

"We wouldn't do it if we were struggling to get by, if we were living paycheck to paycheck," he said. "These are people that just don't know us."

"We get just as excited about number 13 as we did with number 2," Schwandt said.

So what are the prospects for 14?

The answer is unclear.

"Eventually, we're going to come to the end of the line," Jay Schwandt said.

The Schwandts joke that having all boys has its up side. If they had a girl, "we'd have to paint a bedroom and get new clothes."
