Flu sickens 6,300 in Colorado, at least five children are dead...

The Washington Post reported on December 4, 2003:

When 8-year-old Joseph Williams first complained that his stomach hurt, his parents did not think he was seriously ill. “He didn’t have the symptoms of the flu. So there was no alarm,” said Scott, his father. Three days later the youngster was dead, a victim of a nasty strain of the flu virus that is striking Colorado and other parts of the country this fall.
     “It happened so quick and so sudden,” the elder Williams told reporters on the day his son died. “He was fine. He wasn’t even that sick.”
     Williams is one of at least five children who have died so far this year in Colorado from influenza, state officials said Wednesday, announcing that a sixth child’s possibly flu-related death was under investigation.
     More than 6,300 flu cases that have been reported statewide, including more than 1,600 new cases in the last week alone. That’s more than the total number of cases reported in the last two years combined, when only one or two children died from the flu each year.

Parts of western Europe have been hit by a mass outbreak of influenza with up to two million cases expected in France by the end of the week, health officials said.
The epidemic came amid warnings of a SARS-style worldwide pandemic of flu, thanks to the ease of global transmission.
